US Overview Set for 6th-8th Grade Parents
Stacey Evert, Director of College Counseling, will present an
overview of the Upper School curriculum and college counseling
program during two special sessions for sixth-through eighth-grade
parents during Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences Jan. 16. Please
join her at 12:30 p.m. or 5:30 p.m. in the Upper School Library to
hear from a panel of current Upper Schoolers who will talk about
their experiences. We hope you’ll take advantage of this opportunity
to learn more about Brownell-Talbot’s challenging Upper School
academic program and unique approach to college counseling.
1
As you all know, Brownell-Talbot was founded almost 150
years ago. In 1863, as pioneering families traveled west across
the landscape of an emerging nation and it’s territories,
a visionary Episcopal Bishop and families dedicated to
educating their daughters founded Brownell Hall. The
commitment to educating young women a century before the
culminating events of the Civil Rights and Women’s Rights
movement 100 years later demonstrates the profound focus
on the principles of equality, justice, and education. Today,
the continued emphasis on equity and inclusion remain
central to the school’s mission, now educating both young
men and women in an outstanding coeducational program
where students are engaged to learn passionately, think
critically, act responsibly, and lead with integrity. A tradition
of academic excellence and preparation for college and life
in a safe and caring environment has remained a central
part of Brownell-Talbot’s identity almost 150 years later. It is
a privilege to lead our school community and partner with
families, faculty and staff, and our Board of Trustees on
behalf of all of our students who will undoubtedly become
tomorrow’s leaders!
On behalf of Brownell-Talbot, best wishes for an outstanding
2013 and know that we are looking forward to many more
years of service; building bridges and creating partnerships
in a dynamic, relevant, and forward-thinking educational
community.
Warmest regards,
Dr. Sylvia Rodríguez Vargas

Strategic Planning for the Future
B-T to Present ‘Into the Woods’
Brownell-Talbot’s Theater and Fine Arts Departments will present
“Into the Woods” at 7 p.m. Thursday-Friday, Jan. 31-Feb. 1 and at 2
p.m. Saturday Feb. 2.
A brief synopsis of the story from www.uni-heidelberg.de/institute/
fak9/as/groups/drama/intothewoods/short.htm follows.
“An ambivalent Cinderella? A blood-thirsty Little Red Ridinghood?
A Prince Charming with a roving eye? A Witch ... who raps?
They’re all among the cockeyed characters in James Lapine and
Stephen Sondheim’s fractured fairy tale. When a Baker and his Wife
learn they’ve been cursed with childlessness by the Witch next door,
they embark on a quest for the special objects ( a cow as white as
milk... a cape as red as blood... hair as yellow as corn... a slipper as
pure as gold... ) required to break the spell, swindling, lying to and
stealing from Cinderella (with the slipper as pure as gold) Little Red
Ridinghood (with a cape as red as blood) Rapunzel (with the hair as
yellow as corn) and Jack (the one who climbed the beanstalk - with
the cow as white as milk). Everyone’s wish is granted at the end of
Act One but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them
later, with disastrous results. A Giant (A female Giant, that is) steps
down from the heavens and straight upon some beloved characters.
It takes a few lives before the survivors realize that they have to act
altogether in order to succeed. Thus, what begins a lively irreverent
fantasy becomes a moving lesson about community responsibility
and the stories we tell our children.”
2
Brownell-Talbot is designing the next stage in the School’s
history and coauthoring, with various constituencies, the
coming chapter of our educational program. To this end, the
School has partnered with Triangle Associates of St. Louis
to engage in Strategic Planning exercises that will result in
a strategic vision and plan forward for Brownell-Talbot. As
architects of our educational future, we began our work by
engaging in focus group sessions with students, alums, faculty
and staff, administrators, and Board members this past October,
providing robust data for consideration. In just a few weeks, our
consultants will lead Board members, faculty and staff, parents,
and alumni during a two-day retreat to reflect upon significant
areas of school life that will shape the coming years at B-T. This
second step in the process will direct the main anchors of our
Strategic Plan and lead to the third and final step—articulating
and realizing our vision! We are enthusiastic about the future of
our school and look forward to sharing more about our progress
this spring. Go Raiders!

Many students scored very well, but only the top three students

A Personal letter from Parent Pride Chair Wendy Wiseman Gustafson
Dear Friend,
Tell me you’re not GOAL ORIENTED.
Because you’re a fellow Brownell-Talbot parent, I would have a hard time believing you if you told me you are not goal oriented. In fact, amidst all
the DIVERSITY in this School, this is one thing I believe we all have in COMMON. We have a GOAL for our children – and that is
to arm them TODAY with the best education available so that they may enjoy all that life has to offer TOMORROW.
Brownell-Talbot is the School providing this with:
- Unmatched academics via outstanding teachers in the classrooms.
- Opportunities to participate in sports, on stage, and in clubs.
- Expectations to reach beyond themselves via service projects.
- Experiences overall that help develop the “whole” person.
Providing all this takes money. MORE MONEY THAN TUITION COVERS.
This is why there is a Parent Pride Fund – and why it requires your contribution.
If you have not given your contribution yet, WHY NOT?
There isn’t any reason for not participating.
You enjoy the same benefits toward your goal for your children as your parent peers who DO participate.
So when you don’t give, you allow/expect others to subsidize these benefits for you.
You may give ANY amount – over or under – toward the suggested Parent Pride Goal Tender amount, $2,112.
Give $5 or $ 5,000. The point is, we NEED 100% PARTICIPATION.
You DO know where the money goes. Your child is evidence of this every day.
If you still have questions or want to specify where your donation goes, contact Linda Zimmerman.
Tuition CANNOT, and DOES NOT, cover all the benefits your child receives at this School.
Our Trustees revisit this issue every year. They have determined where tuition needs to be to keep us competitive in the market. It simply cannot be
at a level to cover the costs to provide this exemplary education. The good news is your Parent Pride contribution, being outside of tuition, is
100% TAX DEDUCTIBLE.
Need more convincing? Call me at (402) 980-0296.
My husband Gary and I are consumers of education. We’ve experienced the public and archdiocesan schools. They just weren’t “working” for us —
and the goals we have for our children. Today, two attend Brownell-Talbot School and our B-T graduate is doing great at a college recommended to
her by Mrs. Stacey Evert, college counselor. We are grateful that a school of this caliber is available to us. We are grateful to fellow parents who do
their part – monetarily – to make this possible.
We tighten our belts, take deep breaths, and step up to the monetary commitments required of us to take advantage of all this School offers. As
Parent Pride chairs, we ask you to do the same — at whatever level you can. If you want to talk with me about why we do what we do, and why we
ask you to do the same, call me.
If I’ve convinced you to contribute toward the goal for your child, please contact Linda Zimmerman now to make your commitment or
give online at brownell.edu/makeagift.
Thank you!
Wendy Wiseman Gustafson; Parent of Leigh, ’12, Will, ’14, and Jarett, ’16
