physical fitness knowledge worksheet
Section 1: Vocabulary
a.Quiz the students about each vocabulary word before you post
the definition. Have them explain it the best they can in their
own words.
i. Cardiovascular: The cardiovascular system involves the heart
and blood vessels. When you exercise, it makes this system
(especially the heart) stronger
ii. Endurance: The body’s ability to continue exercising over
longer periods of time
iii.Flexibility: The body’s ability to bend and stretch
iv. Body composition: The amount of fat, muscle, and bone that
makes up the body
v. Aerobic: The body’s ability to utilize oxygen
vi.Exercise: Physical work for training and the improvement
of health
vii.Muscular strength: Force that can be used by a muscle or
group of muscles
b.After posting each word, have them write the definition on their
Physical Fitness Knowledge worksheet in section 1. They can use
their own words or copy the definition from the vocabulary sheet.
c.Have students complete the crossword puzzle (can be done before
or after the relay).
d.Review the puzzle to help the students complete any missing words.

Section 2: Apply Your Knowledge
a.Talk with the students about how often they think they should do each of the different kinds of activities
in section 2 of the worksheet. Then make sure they understand the following:2,3
i. Cardiovascular: 60 to 90 minutes most days of the week.
1.Tell students to stand and try this type of exercise (e.g., ten jumping jacks in place).
ii. Muscular strength: Two to three times a week.
1.Tell students to try this type of exercise (e.g., do 20 sit-ups).
iii.Flexibility: Daily (muscles are warmest and ready for stretching right after cardiovascular activity).
1.Tell students to try this type of exercise (e.g., neck stretches–demonstrate first–turning face side to side
or rolling head from side to side).
b.Have students sit in groups and work on “Apply Your Knowledge” in section 2 of the worksheet.
c.You can circulate among the groups and assist as needed.

Section 3: Goals
a.Write an example goal for each area on the board. Have the students work individually to make a goal in
each area.
i. Cardiovascular (e.g., I will walk the dog for 60 minutes each day this week.)
ii.Muscular strength (e.g., I will do ten push-ups three days this week.)
ii.Flexibility (e.g., I will stretch five minutes each day after I have done my cardiovascular exercises.)
1. Remind them that each of these goals can count as minutes to use on their passport trackers for the
STEP Express Challenge.
Iv. ASSESSMENT:
Have students turn in their worksheet so you can assess the work they completed and give them credit if you
would like before sending it home.
V. CONNECTIONS:
To connect with social studies, you can have the students try to find the word in Chinese for as many of the
activities in their crossword puzzle as they can.
