Human Smoke Stack: When you exhale, carbon dioxide (C02) is released in your breath.
Complete the experiment by blowing through the straw into cup #1 with pink liquid What do you predict
will happen to the liquid or solution? Record your data below, then complete the questions:
Data Type
Cup #1 (responding variable, breath)
Cup #2 (no change, controlled variable)
Color
pH
1) What evidence did you see that the liquid changed?_____________________________________________________
2) Why did the color change?_________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Circle the word that best describes what happened in your experiment
1) The solution you blew into became more acidic/basic. (circle one)
2) The breath you blew into the solution represented the burning of fossil fuels, such as gasoline and
oil. When we burn these fuels, carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere. Some of the carbon
dioxide is absorbed into the oceans causing the water to become more acidic/basic.
3) Explain what happens to sea water and to shellfish when excess C02 is absorbed by oceans.

Household Solutions: The pH scale is used to describe the acidity of a solution. The pH scale goes
from 0 to 14 and changes from acidic to basic as the number increases. Pure water is neutral, with a pH
of 7, right in the middle. Notice that seawater is slightly basic. With your lab group, first predict whether
the solutions will have a pH that is higher or lower than pure water and then test the household
solutions. Record the pH of each solution in the table below:

I’m Melting:
Observe the shells that were soaked in vinegar, an acid, to shells soaked in distilled water (neutral). Explain
what happened. Compare the shells soaked in vinegar (acid) and the shells soaked in water (neutral).
Draw a picture of the two jars and describe what happened to the shells soaked in acid using sentences:

A Tale of Two Cities:
Looking at the two felt boards, list 3 similarities:
1) __________________________________________________________________________________________________________
2) __________________________________________________________________________________________________________
3) __________________________________________________________________________________________________________
What are 3 differences between the two felt boards?
1) __________________________________________________________________________________________________________
2) __________________________________________________________________________________________________________
3) __________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Where is all the CO2 or carbon dioxide coming from? _________________________________________________________

WORD BANK: Fill in the blanks with words from the word bank to complete the sentences:
Ocean Acidification
Fossil Fuels
Bicycle
pH
Oceans
CO2
Air
Shellfish
Acidic
Using a __________________________________ to get to school releases less _____________________________________ into
the air. With less C02 in the air, our _______________________________ remain healthy because they are more
basic on the __________________ scale. When we burn __________________________________________________ C02
release into the air, this causes the oceans to become more _______________________________________. When the
oceans are more acidic, ____________________________________ have a hard time forming their shells. In the
future, if we allow too much C02 to enter the ________________________________, our oceans may no longer have
shellfish, this effect is called ____________________________________________________________ .

Discussion & Conclusions: (Discuss your work as a group, then write your summary.) Describe the
experiments you did: 1) Include your hypothesis (prediction), 2) Summarize your findings (results) for
each experiment, 3) Include what you learned and why it is important for the environment and the Salish
Sea 4) Include what we can do to help. Use complete sentences.
