Press Release No. 003/2015 Miele well positioned for EU energy label for cooker hoods A bundle of efficiency and power Gütersloh/Cologne, January 19, 2015. – From January 2015 onwards cooker hoods will also be subject to EU energy labelling. So Miele is offering its customers a blend of new and tried-and-tested models which excel in every respect – offering top-notch energy efficiency without making any compromises in terms of power and convenience. The new energy label is likely to draw attention to the energy consumption of cooker hoods as ratings from A to G are introduced. Manufacturers are already at liberty to classify their products according to the more stringent categories which only become obligatory in 2016 (energy efficiency categories A+ to F). Miele has decided to take this opportunity. Consequently, at the beginning of 2015 no less than 22 models will be rated A+ or A for energy efficiency. Furthermore, the label provides information on average annual energy consumption, fan power (fluid-dynamic efficiency rating), lighting (lighting efficiency), grease separation (grease filter efficiency category) and sound emissions (sound power level). 'Customers are well advised to pay close attention to criteria such as energy efficiency', says Miele Product Manager Hendrik Stegelmann. Compromises in terms of fan power or hob downlighting are a quick way to achieve top marks for energy consumption, but are not in keeping with the Miele philosophy. 'Our customers can rely on our hoods being not only energy-efficient but also effective and quiet, easy to clean and to brightly illuminate the hob down below', Stegelmann continues. In this respect, it is important to know that cooker hoods do not count among the real energy guzzlers in a home. The energy labelling scheme presumes that a model with an A+ rating only runs up an electricity bill of € 9.30 per year, based on an electricity price of €0.30 per kWh. A 'B' rating for energy efficiency would increase the bill to € 20.10. The calculation is based on the premise that a cooker hood is used for 60 minutes a day and the light is running for 2 hours. >>> Free for editorial use Please submit copies to Miele & Cie. Currently, 70% of all Miele cooker hoods are equipped with highly durable LED downlights as a source of warm-white light which is regarded as being very pleasant. A quarter of all Miele machines already features a DC motor. These are considerably more energy-efficient but also much more expensive than their AC counterparts. Miele intends to convert more and more models to the DC fan as time progresses. One feature contributes in a special way towards Miele cooker hoods achieving extremely low consumption. Its name is Con@ctivity 2.0 and is the byword for hob-to-hood communication. Equipped with this technology, the hob unit is able to report its current power settings to the hood, which can then adjust suction power automatically to what is happening on the hob below. In practice, the fan always runs at the appropriate speed and does not consume any more electricity than is necessary. And even if the user forgets to switch the unit off, the hood is powered down automatically after just a short period of time. Consumers who take a liking to Con@ctivity 2.0 have a wide range of Miele products to choose from: throughout the world, almost 2500 hob/hood combinations are possible. And just how effectively a cooker hood goes about its work is illustrated not least by its capability to capture grease particles. Miele uses a 10-ply metal grease filter to bind grease and thereby remove particles from circulation. More than three quarters of all Miele cooker hoods have been awarded the top A rating or a B for grease filter efficiency. For cleaning, grease filters are simply popped into the dishwasher. Miele cooker hoods also count among the quietest on the market. The label expresses sound emissions as a sound power value (in db(A) re 1pW) in the highest regular power setting. Miele deploys various measures to reduce sound emissions. The fan for instance is sound-insulated. The canopy interior (CleanCover) is designed to be as smooth as possible to keep air turbulence low.
