4th Grade’s Weekly Newsletter
North Charleston Creative Arts Elementary School
A Title I School
November 7, 2016
What are we learning this week?
Reading: We are starting a new genre this week: Historical Fiction. We’ll look at how historical fiction
includes facts from history through a fiction story. Also, we’ll finish our DBQ in small groups this week.
We are still making inferences based on background knowledge and clues from the text.
Writing: We are continuing our DBQ about the rainforest this week. We will analyze several documents
that we will ultimately use to help support our arguments for our essay. For our language review, we
will learn about analogies (again!) and homophones. There will be a quiz on Friday...be sure to study
your classwork on Thursday!
Math: Students will continue to practice their multiplication this week. Last week we learned how to use
and draw base-ten models to show our multiplication, as well as how to multiply using the partial product
method. This week your child will build off of that knowledge to regroup in multiplication. The
Distributive Property (partial product method) will be explored further. Our weekly review quiz will be on
Friday so be on the lookout for the review sheet coming home Thursday afternoon.
Science: We begin this week with a fun bird beak adaptation activity.
Students will use various “beaks” to catch different types of food. We will
also learn about senses and how some animals have incredible senses to
help them thrive!
Social Studies: “The Age of Exploration” is our focus again this week. We’ll learn
about more explorers. We will also create tableaus this week. Please send any photos you
have of historical sites you have visited. Next week, we will have ECM here to teach the
students about settlement and the colonies. The children will use these as backdrops for a project!
