February Birthdays
If you were born February 1–18, you are
Aquarius, the Water Bearer. Witty, clever,
and honest, Water Bearers desire
independence above all and are not afraid to
deviate from the crowd to pursue their own
interests. Those born February 19–28 are
Pisces, the Fish. Selfless, spiritual, and
intuitive, Pisces swim on an inner journey.
They are emotional, compassionate people
who are always willing to help others.

The Story of St. Valentine
In a column written by David Kithcart for the Christian
Broadcasting Network (CBN), St. Valentine is depicted
as a Christian priest who would perform secret marriage
ceremonies for those who were deemed too young to
be married by an edict set forth in those times.
Marriage was thought to be sacred and between one
man and one woman for life. Young people were not
considered capable of making such a long-term
commitment.

marriage for couples of all ages, St. Valentine was
sentenced to death by three cruel punishments
including beating, stoning and finally decapitation.
Whitefriars Street Church is one of the places that
reports it house his remains and every year people still
make the pilgrimage to pay their respects.
St. Valentine is known as the patron saint of lovers. He
Single-Tasking would often sign letters “from your Valentine” and this
closing line is still used today when people exchange
Day
Valentines.

The Superstitions of Friday the 13th
Friday the 13th is a popular superstition in the Western culture that occurs
when the 13th of the month falls on a Friday. Historians and folklorists say
there is no reference or history of superstitions relating to this day before
the 19th century. The day is said to be “unlucky” and many people fear
this day.
The fear of Friday the 13th is called “paraskevidekatriaphobia.” According
to the Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute of North Carolina,
approximately 17 to 21 million people in the United States have a fear of
this day, making it the most feared day in history.
Some people are so affected by this fear that they do not go about their
normal routines (i.e. work, sleep patterns, travel). There was also a study
conducted by the British Medical Journal that demonstrated a significant
increase in traffic-related incidents on Friday the 13th as opposed to any
other day. It is estimated that $800 to $900 million dollars of business is
lost on Friday the 13th!
Whatever your superstitions are relating to this day, we wish you a safe
and happy Friday the 13th!

Ashes Available on Ash Wednesday
Jeannine Pacheco, Activities Director, will be offering ashes to any resident or
staff person who would like them on Ash Wednesday.
This year, Ash Wednesday is February 18th. Jeannine will go room to room to
distribute the ashes, so please be sure to let her know that you are interested
in receiving them so that she can make sure to find you before the end of the
day.
The celebration of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday. It is a Holy Day of
Obligation and is a day of fasting. In the Catholic Church, Ash Wednesday is
observed by fasting, abstinence from meat and repentance of one’s
transgressions. Lent ends with the celebration of Easter Sunday.
Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of blessing the ashes
created from the palms that were blessed the previous Palm Sunday.
