Introduction
The aim of our service is to
promote, protect and support children and young people in
the community.
To maintain and improve their health in order for them to
achieve their full potential educationally.
To provide knowledge and encourage healthy lifestyle
choices
School Health Team:
This service is a multi-disciplinary team of doctors, nurses,
therapists and their clerical support who liaise with other specialists
and education staff to provide a range of services for children in
schools and the community.
School nurses are trained nurses, some holding the Specialist
School Nurse qualifications, who have chosen to work in this very
important area of nursing. Some nurses have developed
specialised skills in areas such as Attention Deficit Hyper Activity
Disorder, behaviour management and sexual health.
The emphasis of school nurse’s work is the prevention of ill health
by the promotion of healthy life styles and the encouragement of
preventative medicine such as immunisations, healthy eating and
exercise. They also offer support to students who may have short
or long term medical conditions.
Many things may affect your health. The School Nursing Team
can offer support and advice on subjects such as:
School entry assessments (hearing and vision).
National Child Measurement Programme ( height and
weight)
Individual support identified throughout a child’s school life.

General health issues.
Advice, support and training for schools around specific
health issues such as severe allergies.
Immunisation advice and vaccinations in schools.
Emotional health needs such as:
o bullying
o self esteem
o looked after children health reviews
o self-harm
o stress management
o bereavement support
o young carers’ support
Healthy lifestyle choices (e.g. nutrition, managing weight,
exercise, smoking cessation).
Sexual health / contraception.
Alcohol / drug misuse.
Behavior management support.
Enuresis (bed wetting).
Parenting support groups

NHS Children’s Charter
You can expect to be told the name of your school nurse and
how to contact them.
You can expect to be offered a health check for your child
during the first year in Primary School.
Your child will be weighed, measured and have sight and
hearing tests during their school career.

You will be told the results of any checks and, if necessary,
referred for further advice.
You can access your School Health Nurse via the contact numbers
