Faculty Trends recent scholarship of the JSU faculty 2008-2009 From the President… Jacksonville State University is the largest concentration of “brain power” in northeast Alabama. Our University represents the greatest concentration of faculty and staff who hold the highest academic credential in their individual disciplines. This “cognitive complex” of experts is one reason why our university has achieved more accreditations in academic disciplines than any other regional university in Alabama. This second edition of Faculty Trends highlights our faculty’s academic research, publications, presentations, performances, and service to our community in the 2008-2009 academic year. This is our opportunity to showcase the breadth and depth of faculty interest and accomplishment. Through research, scholarship, and service, our faculty not only advance knowledge and keep current in their disciplines, but also improve teaching and the experience of our students who are involved in research and service. We are proud of our faculty and want to share their accomplishments with our friends and alumni. We encourage you to identify your own interests within this listing of expertise and engage in the excellence that is Jacksonville State University. Sincerely, William A. Meehan, Ed.D. President 2 Vice President for Academic & Student Affairs… From the At Jacksonville State University, academic research and scholarship are among our top priorities, and thanks to an outstanding faculty, this university is becoming more well-known in those areas. In this second issue of Faculty Trends, we are proud to honor our faculty’s recent scholastic accomplishments. Each year, I have the privilege of reading through hundreds of pages of faculty portfolios, which include examples of the publications, presentations and performances they participate in throughout the year — and each year, I am impressed. Though I am no longer in the classroom, I personally aim to continue maintaining a high level of scholarship. As you turn the pages of this publication, I know you will be as impressed as I am by the way our faculty also recognizes the importance of continuing to make contributions to higher education through scholarly activities. Dr. Rebecca Turner From the Editor… We are pleased to present this second issue of Faculty Trends. Its publication highlights recent scholarship of the Jacksonville State University faculty. The record of that scholarship was derived from two sources: the quarterly reports of the Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs to the Board of Trustees, which is a compilation of faculty activities provided by deans and department heads; and the individual faculty members’ applications for Faculty Research Awards presented at the spring Faculty Awards Ceremony. Faculty Trends also recognizes JSU’s successful applicants for external grants and contracts and the recipients of the Earlon and Betty McWhorter Outstanding Teacher Award, the Cleo and Carla Thomas Community Education and Service Award, the Faculty Scholar Lecture Award, and the Ray and Ruth Ringer Faculty Award. Many hands were involved in publishing Faculty Trends. Thanks to Bethany Harbison Boulahanis for interviewing and profiling faculty award recipients, Joe Delap and Lynn Varcak for help with the content, Erin Hill and Amanda Porter for design and layout, Mary Smith and Graham Lewis for production, Steve Latham and Angie Finley for photography, and Tim Garner for his marketing expertise and good advice throughout this project. Special thanks go to Dr. Rebecca Turner, Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, who funded and supported Faculty Trends from its inception through publication. We are proud of our faculty and their accomplishments. We hope this publication encourages further achievement and becomes an annual recognition of the JSU faculty. William J. Hubbard 1 Ray and Ruth Ringer Faculty Award 2009 and Information Sciences in 1994, Dr. Francia has worked toward becoming a better educator by actively researching and writing in the field of computer science. “As an educator, keeping current in your discipline is not only a professional commitment but also an obligation to your students,” Dr. Francia says. “And with the rapid advancement in the computing discipline, we really do not have a choice but to keep up.” The past sixteen years have been full ones for Dr. Francia. In addition to conducting countless research projects and publishing numerous papers, he was one of five national recipients of a Microsoft Award in Innovation in Higher Education in 1996, represented JSU as a Fulbright Scholar in Malta in 2007, helped create and maintain a collaborative academic partnership with China’s Taizhou University, and was the recipient of the Earlon and Betty McWhorter Outstanding Teacher Award in 2007. He was in Bangkok, Thailand, working to establish an academic partnership with Assumption University, when he received word that he was the 2008 recipient of the Ray and Ruth Ringer Faculty Award. The Ray and Ruth Ringer Faculty Award, a University-sponsored, faculty-administered program established in the Spring of 2008, is designed to honor faculty who excel in the areas of scholarship (including publications, presentations, etc.), community service from direct involvement in organizations, clubs, or charities, and exemplary classroom teaching. This award can only be received once during the faculty member's tenure at Jacksonville State University. Hanging in Professor Guillermo Francia’s office is a small, framed cross-stitch that reads “Fill your mind with the good in life, and there will be no room for anything else.” His mother hand-stitched the simple message long ago, but for Dr. Francia, the words continue to hold as true as ever. “Those are the words of wisdom that I live by every day of my life and wish to share with my students,” Dr. Francia says. For Dr. Francia, focusing on teaching, research and service is vital in his effort to “fill his mind with the good in life.” Since joining Jacksonville State University’s Department of Mathematical, Computer 2 “It was quite an honor to receive this award,” Dr. Francia says. “I am quite fortunate to have been blessed with people who tirelessly motivated, encouraged, and assisted me, in one form or another, towards achieving personal and professional growth.” Dr. Francia says JSU has changed tremendously since his 1994 arrival. From the explosive growth of the university’s online course offerings to an increased focus on collaborating with institutions all over the world, JSU has been nimble in adapting to the rapidly changing, technology-driven academic field, explains Dr. Francia. Another important change Dr. Francia has witnessed is the closing of the gap between departments and disciplines within the university through active research collaboration. In fact, his current research on community resiliency, regulatory compliance, critical infrastructure protection and risk management involves professors from emergency management, accounting, technology, criminal justice, geography and economics. “I can see on the horizon a scenario in which JSU is fully embracing a ‘flat world’ of academic collaboration with institutions all over the world,” Dr. Francia says. “That is exciting to me.” Thomas Award For Outstanding Community Education/Service 2009 Over the course of his own academic journey, Veasey was shaped by a few great professors who encouraged him to work harder and reach higher. Now he uses the principles he learned from them to inspire his own students. “I had some great teachers and mentors who were more interested in helping to create productive individuals than in receiving a pay check, or ego enhancement,” Veasey explains. “I hope I have imitated the best aspects of those professors that helped me along the way.” But for Veasey, the duties of being an educator do not end outside the classroom doors. He is also passionate about serving and educating the community that surrounds the university. “The health and well-being of the university service area is one part of the mission of the institution,” says Veasey. “From President Meehan to every university employee, the health and positive quality of life of the community is key to the future growth and development of the university.” As a young boy growing up in Tyler, Texas, Dr. Lawson Veasey never imagined that years later he would find himself shaping young leaders and educating the community in Jacksonville, Alabama. He thought instead that he would find work in a local oil field or factory. But after joining the Louisiana Tech University basketball team and enrolling in classes, Veasey, an avid reader, discovered that he loved learning — and was quite good at it. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, he went on to earn a Master of Arts in Political Science from Stephen F. Austin State University, then a Master of Public Administration from Idaho State University, and then a Doctor of Arts in Government from Idaho State University. Today, Veasey is Professor and Head of the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at Jacksonville State University, where he teaches organizational theory, finance, and a seminar class in public policy analysis to students of the master’s program in public administration. One of the ways Veasey does his part is through his work with the Community Development Institute, which he co-founded. The institute, which began in Arkansas in 1987 and in Alabama in 2007, is focused on “community betterment leading to socioeconomic improvement.” According to Veasey, the current recession has underscored the need for more development training in the United States. Veasey’s work in the community and in the classroom was recognized by JSU in 2009, when he was presented the Cleo and Carla Thomas Education and Service Award, a universitysponsored, faculty-administered program established in Spring 1999, that is designed to honor an outstanding faculty member for his or her achievements in the area of education or service to the civic community in the Jacksonville State University area. Veasey has published numerous articles, book chapters, and monographs concerning his interests in revenue and expenditure issues and intergovernmental relations, and he remains actively involved in the development process as both a practitioner and academician. He and his wife Lin have six children—Susie, Elizabeth, JT, Wyatt, Virginia and Laurellei. 3 Faculty Scholar Lecture Award 2009 In the classroom, Prudlo emphasizes the importance of experiencing historical places to his students as well, and works hard to create opportunities for them to do so. He recently took five JSU students on a three-week trip to Rome, Italy, where they stayed in apartments a few blocks away from Vatican City and Rome’s metro. While there, Prudlo lectured his students on walking tours and says their discussions often crossed hundreds of years in just a few steps. The students were greatly moved by being in the places that he had lectured about in Alabama, and the trip was so successful that Prudlo has another in the works for May of 2011. “To stand in the place where the agricultural Romans first began to build ships to fight maritime Carthage is very powerful,” Prudlo explains. “To stand in front of the tombs of young British and Americans from World War II, buried half-a-world away to defend freedom — these are the things that can really teach.” When not traveling the globe, one of Prudlo’s favorite classroom courses is the two-semester History of Christianity class. “Christianity has knitted together the disparate cultures of the Jews, of Rome and of the Greeks,” Prudlo says. “It is a pleasure to lead students through this fascinating history.” For Dr. Donald Prudlo, teaching history is about much more than paging through textbooks and assigning papers. He believes that the best way to understand it is to explore the very places that history was made. “When one stands on a battlefield or in a cathedral, the sense of historical reality and continuity just washes over you,” Prudlo explains. “It gives one a sense of connectedness and rootedness.” When Prudlo, an assistant professor of ancient and medieval history at Jacksonville State University, began work on his book The Martyred Inquisitor: The Life and Cult of Peter of Verona, he did not just research from afar. He headed to Italy, Ireland, England and Germany to pore over the medieval texts himself. “One of the great things about being a medievalist is that almost none of the sources are either edited or translated, so one has to travel to Europe to do research,” says Prudlo. 4 Prudlo credits his own talented professors at the University of Virginia, the Notre Dame Graduate School of Christendom College, and Christendom College for teaching him that “getting by” is never enough. Today, he follows their example and continues to expect and require excellence from his students, while also staying active in the world of research. His hard work paid off in 2009, when he was awarded the Faculty Scholar Lecture Award, a university-sponsored, facultyadministered program established in 1998 that is designed to honor an outstanding faculty member for research, publication or other original work in his or her field. “Knowing that this award was made by my colleagues was very humbling,” Prudlo says. “It was a sincere honor.” Prudlo and his wife, Therese, have three children, Monica, Eamon and Peter. Outstanding Teacher Award 2009 “I strongly believe that knowing what and how NOT to do something is half of the battle,” Scremin explains. “But from my good professors, I learned how teaching can inspire us to achieve great things in life.” In the fall of 2008, Scremin joined the faculty of Jacksonville State University, as Assistant Professor in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation and coordinator of the Master of Public Administration with a concentration in athletic administration program and began putting his ideas about teaching to work. His student-centered teaching style is based largely on the Golden Rule of doing unto others as he would have others do unto him. In 2009, his teaching efforts were recognized at the university’s annual Faculty Awards Reception as he was presented The Earlon and Betty McWhorter Outstanding Teacher Award. This university-sponsored, faculty-administered program was established in 1993 and is designed to honor an outstanding teacher for his or her efforts in teaching. Dr. Glaucio Scremin has always loved sports. Playing them, watching them, talking about them — it didn’t matter, as long as sports were involved. His passion for playing began early, when he was a youngster playing soccer in Sao Paulo, Brazil, dreaming of playing professionally. His soccer career ended in college, but Scremin was not deterred and continued working to find a career that incorporated his love for sports. Scremin went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences from Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania and then a Master of Sports Science in Sports Studies and Doctor of Education in Sports Management from the United States Sports Academy. While in graduate school, he realized that not only did he love sports, but he had an interest in and an aptitude for teaching and researching as well. When Scremin was hired by JSU, he was also given the mission of developing a master’s program in sport management for the university. The program has already been approved as a Class A teacher certification program in sport management, and Scremin is now seeking approval for a Master of Science in Sport Management from the Alabama Department of Education. The program will have two concentrations, Interscholastic Athletic Administration and Sport Marketing and Administration, and if approved will launch in the spring of 2011. “The chief objective of the proposed Master of Science in Sport Management program at JSU is to provide the students with the knowledge, skills and abilities required to meet the job market in the sport industry,” Scremin explains. He hopes that the program, once put into place, will successfully prepare qualified sport managers to work in secondary school athletic administration, as well as any segment of the sport industry. Scremin is the son of Edevar and Lourdes Scremin, and he is married to Stephanie Volpini. Throughout his time as a student, Scremin says his professors— both the good ones and and the bad ones—had a major influence on his own future teaching style. 5 External Grants & Contracts 2008-2009 Saffa Al-Hamdani AL View Scholarship $1000 Steve Armstrong Greg Bonds Vicky Brown Vickie Brown Vickie Brown Thomas Baucom Mark Fagan Aaron Garrett Becky Geyer Shawn Giddy James Green Kelly Gregg Beth Hembree Harry Holstein Gloria Horton/ Lisa Williams Tim King Tim King Jane Kushma Mark Meade Linda Mitchell Nixon Mwebi Pat Shaddix Alicia Simmons Fred Smith Joe Whitmore Lisa Williams Jan Wilson Nouredine Zettili SPE/SDE Demonstration Site BCS Grant Science in Motion AMSTI Middle School Project AMSTI City of Smyrna Training for AAA GENEVOT-IV: X-TOOLSS OVC Basketball Enhancement-Women’s Bullet Proof Vests OVC Basketball Enhancement-Men’s NPS LRC Geological Mapping Adv Education Nursing FY 2010 USDA 09-PA-1108-0105 JSU Writing Project $15,000 $12,500 $405,000 $209,685 $1,870,010 $4,000 $20,000 $16,100 $6,500 $3,115 $6,500 $2,320 $28,036 $22,500 $46,000 PEPNet South DSS Translator Interpreter Svc CARRI Project Holiday Darter 21st Century Learning Camp ACS Project Seed 2009 SBI/SBDC Minority Beyond Boundaries BITE JSU Bus Project ADPH-CSEPP FY2010 TIMES 2 ImpactSeed FY 09-10 $59,606 $47,375 $189,404 $16,997 $17,500 $11,700 $30,000 $200,000 $3,000 $1,943,557 $91,000 $150,000 $165,000 Total 6 $5,593,406 ARTS & SCIENCES 7 Art Ron Baker Ron Baker, “Exhibit - Mixed Media Paintings,” 50th Annual Gadsden Art Association Juried Exhibition, Gadsden, Alabama, 2009.
