News From Thorndon CEVC Primary School
May 2017
I am delighted to become the new Headteacher for Thorndon
School and I am looking forward to working with the staff,
parents and pupils over the coming weeks and months. The
staff, pupils and governors have been very welcoming.
I am passionate about learning and wish to pass on my
enthusiasm to the pupils. The staff at Thorndon School are
committed to ensuring that the pupils are given fantastic
learning opportunities and the pupils are keen to learn and
develop. We want to continue to ensure that Thorndon School
is the first choice school for the children in our community. It
is certainly an exciting school to be part of!
Thorndon School has been working on developing a partnership
with Worlingworth CEVC Primary School. The governing body believe that a
collaborative partnership is essential to allow our school to continue its journey of
excellence giving our children the best educational outcomes for each individual
pupil, and our staff exciting opportunities for career development. Whilst many
things in the school will not change, we feel that this is a very exciting opportunity
for our school and the local community, to share its expertise with others whilst
developing and strengthening the schools position within our village.
Victoria Gascoyne-Cecil
Executive Headteacher
As promised in our last School News, here is a flavour of what our children will be
leaning this term. What fun!
Ark Class
We are very lucky to welcome Mrs Vink to Ark Class this term. She will be teaching
every Monday and Wednesday. Mrs Vink has already spent time in the class and is
beginning to know the children really well. Once again the children have decided their
topic which is ‘Explorers’. They will be learning about different environments and these
include volcanoes, under the sea, deserts and many more. The children will be
identifying key features about each location and carrying out lots of science
experiments to explain why things happen… of course this means making our own
volcanoes and explosions! They will become familiar with using maps and will be using
desert creatures as inspiration for their DT project on levers. For more information
please see our website.
Victory Class
This half term, our topic will be ‘Forests’. Amongst other things, we will be finding out
about different forests around the world and exploring the animals and humans who
live there. We will find out what trees need to survive and how trees influence the
oxygen cycle. We will talk about things that were and are made of wood and we will find
out about how important it is to recycle paper.
Discovery Class
This term the children in Discovery will be learning about the local history of Thorndon.
They will carry out a study of the school and learn all about its history. They will also
learn about the history of Kerrison Reformatory School. They will be researching the
local community and finding out what life was generally like in Thorndon many, many
years ago. The children will have lots of opportunities to explore the village throughout
this topic looking at the buildings and finding out about how they were built. The
children will then have the opportunity to create a 3D model of a specific house in
Thorndon.
Endeavour Class
Our topic for this half term is ‘SUPERHUMANS’, this is a science and history-based
study of our bodies and medicine through the ages. We will be learning about the
circulatory system and the functions of the heart, blood vessels and blood. We shall
study how nutrients are transported around our bodies and about the impact diet,
exercise, drugs and life style has on our bodies. In art we will be painting self-portraits
and producing textiles based on fingerprint patterns.
In addition, we are delighted to have been able to arrange a visit from a local author
Steve Parker. He has donated many of his non-fiction books to the school library and
will be coming in on 17th May to talk to the children and run some writing workshops.
Of course the Year 2 and 6 children will be taking their SATS this half term which as
always is done in a child friendly way. This does involve drinks, biscuits and a little
extra playtime!
