DESCRIPTION OF FINDINGS & CONCLUSIONS
A. Description of Facility
Timbuktu Academy is a Charter School located at 10800 E. Canfield in Detroit.
Timbuktu Academy is a two story school building. Matrix Head Start will operate Head
Start program. The classrooms are located on the lower level of the building. The
center is requesting a maximum capacity of 36 children.
Approved space (room numbers, sizes, capacity and ages of children for which
each room/well-defined space is approved, etc.):
The following rooms are approved for child care:
Classroom 119 measures 27 ft. x 24 ft., providing approximately 648 sq. ft. and can
accommodate up to 18 children (ages 2.5 years to 5 years) based on 35 sq. ft. per child.
Classroom 121 measures 27 ft. x 24 ft., providing approximately 648 sq. ft. and can
accommodate the requested capacity of 18 children (ages 2.5 years to 5 years) based
on 35 sq. ft. per child.

Classroom 123 measures 27 sq. ft. x 24 sq. ft., providing approximately 648 sq. ft. and
can accommodate the requested capacity of 18 children (ages 2.5 to 5 years old) based
on 35 sq. ft. per child.
Equipment:
The center has an adequate supply of play and developmentally appropriate equipment
for the children to utilize.
Number of sinks and toilets:
The boys’ bathroom has two toilets, two urinals, and two sinks. The girls’ bathroom has
two toilets and two sinks. This is sufficient to support the requested capacity.
Outdoor play area - location, fenced or not, water hazards:
The center will not utilize the outdoor in-ground equipment until an outdoor playground
inspection has been completed. The program will utilize outdoor play equipment such
as balls, bicycles, jump ropes, etc. The outdoor play area is fenced in and there are no
water hazards.
Documentation if a lead hazard risk assessment was required and the results:
This center had a lead hazard risk assessment completed and approved on 10/5/2016
by Dawn Winther, Lead Hazard Risk Assessor, ATC Group Services, LLC, #P-04290
Documentation of playground safety:
The playground has not been inspected.
B. Program Description
Ages of children served:
This child care program will serve children age 2.5 years to 5 years.
Proposed days and hours of operation:
Days and hours of operation are Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Full or part time (AM or PM sessions or both):
This center will offer full day sessions.
Other program components - transportation, swimming, food service:

The center will offer breakfast, lunch and PM snack. The food will be catered in from
Touch of Class Catering Services. The license number is SFE4063072896 if there are
any changes to food services will require an initial inspection of the kitchen facility by
the Institute for Population Health-Environmental Health and Safety Division.
The center will not offer transportation or a swimming component.
Name of program director and under what rules the program director is qualified:
Christina Morales is the program director. She is approved under R400.8113 (9) (a) and
(13).
