Trusted. Serving you. Do you remember why you chose CapEd to be your financial services provider? It may be among many reasons shared by the 186 million people in 97 countries who have also chosen credit unions, but it most likely has something to do with the common philosophy of “people helping people.” Unlike most other financial institutions, credit unions are not-for-profit, democratically controlled, volunteer board of directors, member-owned cooperatives. They exist to serve their members, and that level of service remains high even during the toughest times. Instead of issuing stock or paying dividends to outside shareholders, credit unions provide value to their members by returning earnings in the form of lower loan rates, higher interest on deposits, and lower or even no transaction fees. AFTER HOURS Lost or stolen Visa CREDIT card: 800-991-4964 Lost or stolen Visa DEBIT card: 800-554-8969 2 This year’s theme celebrates the advantages of credit union membership. Value, trust, and service are just some of the many benefits of being a credit union member. You are in charge of your money and your credit union. At CapEd, we are proud of our heritage as a cooperative financial services provider and our connection to the more than 54,000 credit unions worldwide. On October 21, we’ll join credit unions and their members around the world to celebrate International Credit Union Day in recognition of the benefits those institutions bring to their members. Check out our Web site at www. CapEdfcu.org for more information about International Credit Union Day, and don’t forget to stop by your local branch on October 21 for treats! Lets celebrate the credit union difference. More specifically, there is a growing concern that, between healthcare reform and the coming expiration of the Bush tax cuts, they are going to be handing over significantly more money to Uncle Sam. In anticipation of rising taxes, SagePoint Financial is offering strategies to shelter some of those tax liabilities. Some of those favored strategies include charitable lead trusts and paying taxes up front, before rates rise, and converting their Traditional IRAs to Roth IRAs. Education - Costlier Than Anyone Imagined One of the biggest costs facing many Americans over the next four to 10 years will be the tuition bills for their children. Unfortunately, the cost of a college education is one of those things that seem never to drop. Today, for example, four years at a private school will run from $100,000 to $250,000. According to a nonprofit scholarship website FinAid.org, it assumes that higher education will increase at 7% per year, thus doubling in cost by the year 2020. Because of the financial environment we are living in, it is no longer appropriate as financial advisors to only give advise regarding a members retirement assets. We have come to realize the importance of comprehensive planning in order for a member’s total financial house to be in order and kept that way. When facing this financial environment, it is essential for CapEd members to consider establishing a comprehensive financial plan. It starts with understanding what’s important to you, what’s important about money to you. Once we understand what’s important, the next discussion centers on goals and plans. Let me illustrate using a football team analysis. You are the team owner(s); you hire us to be the head coach. Together, we will help you put together a game plan, a comprehensive financial plan. Financial mysteries you just have to wonder about... If the salesperson is so sure that the audio equipment you’re buying is well made, why is he also trying to sell you an extended warranty? Planning Ahead for A Happy Holiday The holidays are coming and bringing the “shopping season” with them. While you may think you’re doing something good for the economy by going out and spending to your heart’s content, getting gifts for everyone on your list without setting a budget, and swiping your credit card for home decor and other holiday favorites, ask yourself this: what effect are my actions going to have on my OWN economy? Unless you are a member of the Federal Reserve, the President of the United States, a potential candidate, or a talk show host, the American economy is not your primary responsibility. What you ARE responsible for, however, is your budget and your own finances. It’s possible to be in very good financial shape in your personal life, even as the country struggles. And, if you’re already struggling, you can still get out of hot water through smart money management. During the holidays, that may not sound like much fun, but if you begin planning now, you can have a wonderful, beautiful, meaningful, and exciting holiday season without overspending. Here are some plan-ahead ideas: - Salvage what you can from last year, your basement, thrift shops, and neighbors for home decor and clothes. Before you buy anything new for the holidays, be prepared with a list of what you really, really need to make the holidays enjoyable. If last year’s holiday dress still fits...why not wear it? - Get together with friends and family for a ‘holiday stuff’ exchange. Ask everyone to bring holiday items and new gifts they have no use for, and either sell them to each other at a low price (with profits possibly going to benefit a charity) or simply trade with each other. Either way, everyone saves money, and everyone comes away with less clutter and more of what they want. After all, one person’s junk is another person’s treasure. - Make a list of people you want to give gifts to NOW, check it twice, and start shopping. First, shop your own home, and then check out local discount stores, flea markets, and yard sales. Without looking ‘cheap’, you can come up with some great buys if you plan ahead. Last minute purchases often are more expensive because you have no choice but to buy what you can, quickly. - Wherever possible, make gifts instead of buying them. You’ll find lots of ideas for fun, homemade gifts online or in craft stores. With some advance planning, your holiday season will be affordable, exciting, fun, and, as a little bonus, stress-free! (Revised) Congrats to Renaud Boucher-Browning Education Exchange 2010 College Grant Recipient Renaud Boucher-Browning, one of our members, is the recipient of one of this years’ $1,000 Education Exchange College Grants. This national annual scholarship program offers four $5,000 grants and 30 $1,000 grants worth a combined total of $50,000, to eligible high school seniors each year. The program’s goal is to recognize, honor, and assist hardworking and academically talented students as they further their education and prepare for the challenging careers that lie ahead. Renaud is a recent graduate of Boise High School where he was a member of the National Honor Society, the Humanitarian Club, and founder of Orchestra Buddies Tutoring Program. Renaud is an avid musician and was in the Boise Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. He was the winner of the Idaho Emerging Composers Competition. Honored as a National Merit Finalist, Renaud will attend Rice University where he plans to major in music. We at CapEd are honored to present this grant to Renaud. He was chosen from thousands of applicants nationwide. If you are interested in applying for the 2011 Education Exchange College Grant, applications and information will be available in our branches as well as on our website in January 2011! 5 Go Direct: Safety Month Ripe for Direct Deposit Promo The U.S. Treasury Department’s “Go Direct” campaign is again asking us to educate our members on the safety benefits of using direct deposit for Social Security and other government payments. Over 485,000 Social Security and supplemental security income (SSI) checks were reported lost or stolen and $64 million in checks issued by the Treasury were fraudulently endorsed during 2008. October is National Crime Prevention Month. What a great reminder to use electronic delivery for government benefits checks, which helps reduce the risk of identity theft and helps reduce stolen checks and forgeries.
