Bay of Biscay
Although physically a peninsula, Gibraltar is historically biologically and politically more of an island. At three miles long and 3/4 mile
wide, Gibraltar covers a total land area of just 2.25 square miles. Unique geologically from the surrounding land regions made up of
younger rocks, the peninsula is basically a limestone and shale ridge, the result of an ancient seabed made up of millions of small
shelled sea animals dating back 200 million years. The highest point at 1,396 feet, lies at the southern end. With sporadic periods of
prehistoric inhabitation, many relics have been found in the rock’s numerous caves including the first Neanderthal skull. With limited
fresh water resource (there are no rivers or lakes), concrete tanks have been blasted into the mountainside to collect rainwater.
Two thirds of Gibraltar’s population of 29,481 are Gibraltarians, which are those born before 1925 and their descendents. They are
primarily of Genoese, British, Spanish, Maltese and Portuguese descent. Only Gibraltarians have citizenship rights, while all others,
mostly Indian merchants and their families and Moroccan workers, must obtain residence permits.

sights to visit while shopping
A. St. michael’s cave
This spot is one of the most popular areas on the Rock for tourists.
Situated approximately 900 feet above sea level, it is filled with
stalactites and stalagmites, some of which look like giant sticks of
barley sugar. The cave has beautiful acoustics and is occasionally
used for concerts and orchestral shows.
b. ape’s den
Located on Old Queen’s Road, the Ape’s Den is the home to the
famous apes or tail-less monkeys that live on the side of the Rock.
c. europa point and lighthouse
Europa Point is located at the southernmost tip of the peninsula and
offers views all the way to Morocco. The lighthouse, which was
constructed entirely of hewn stone, came into operation on August
1, 1841 and is said to have had a very powerful light for that period. Its
rays were increased by a means of a fixed lens and mirrors.
d. cable car
This is one of the best ways to experience the breathtaking views of
the Rock and surrounding area. The cable car begins at the
Gibraltar Botanic Gardens and proceeds to the Ape’s Den. From
there, it proceeds up to the summit from where, on a clear day, you
can see the coast of Morocco with the Atlantic stretching before you
and the Mediterranean behind.

next to the Parade Ground. They contain a variety of tropical and
sub-tropical species. The gardens are open from 9:00 am to dusk,
daily.
g. moorish castle
This great square tower dates back to the early fourteenth century
and displays the battle scars of many sieges. The Tower of Homage
is all that remains of the original castle complex, which, at one time,
stretched all the way down to Casemates Square. It is closed to the
public.

Known as the "Rock", Gibraltar has been relied on for centuries as a beacon defining the northern point of the strait, one of two

ibn Zeyad, a Berber who landed on Gibraltar in 711 AD in the Arab armies of Islam’s push to conquer Spain. It’s counterpart, Mount
Hacho, lies just 20 miles to the south on the African coast. Much of the region’s history has involved conflicts over control of Gibraltar
due to its strategic and commercial economic importance from the earliest times.
TRANSPORTATION
All of Gibraltar can easily be traveled on
foot. Various sights including the Ape’s

History
Towering over the surrounding countryside, the impressive cliffs of Gibraltar have attracted inhabitants for centuries. Lying on the
coast of Spain at the southwestern corner of Europe, Gibraltar borders the strait of the same name, the only passage between the
North Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Only a narrow, sandy one-mile long isthmus links this strategically situated
peninsula to the Iberian Peninsula.
