Van Alan Clark, Jr. and Mary H. Clark. They envisioned a family foundation that was capable not only of reacting to the needs of the community, but also providing leadership grants and taking chances other foundations might be unwilling to consider. Van Clark believed in solutions. He believed that the world could be managed for the better. He believed that bright people, dedicated to a common goal, would inevitably achieve that goal. He was an activist who was willing to, in his own words, “Step up to the plate and make a good cut at the ball.” A restless and imaginative man, he fought for better outcomes in all of his endeavors. Over the years, the Island Foundation has alternately talked and listened, but always with the goal of motivating action and creative solutions. There is a challenge embedded in every opportunity. — Stephen H. Clark Island Foundation Five-Year Report: 2010-2014 1 from the president and executive director Here and now, the Island Foundation is poised to help strengthen the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors. With established staff, and with the next generation of trustees fully entrenched and at the helm, we are positioned to continue a legacy of thoughtful philanthropy. The last five years have brought significant growth at the Foundation, and we have structured that growth by increasing funding for our priority areas, adding a Global program area, and being strategic with funding for basic needs as we respond to recovery efforts after the Great Recession. Relationships remain at the core of our work. By working with nonprofits, funders, and other stakeholders, we have created spaces for peer learning, support, and collaborative impact. These relationships matter, and we will continue to work with our partners to ensure a sustainable future for the nonprofits we support. In 2014, the Island Foundation celebrated its 35th anniversary. Over the course of its history, the Foundation has awarded almost 2,000 grants and distributed close to $46 million to nonprofits. While the impact of that giving can be felt in some further corners of the world, most of the Foundation’s impact has been centered in our home region of Southeastern Massachusetts. Moving forward, we remain committed to our belief that our grantees have the answers, and we hope our grants will foster their questions, solutions, and dreams. Hannah C. Nesbeda, President of the Board Denise M. Porché, Executive Director 2 Island Foundation Five-Year Report: 2010-2014 GRANTMAKING PRIORITIES The Island Foundation’s grant priorities fall within four major categories: Environment, New Bedford, Alternative Education, and Global. The Foundation supports projects in coastal areas of Maine, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island and selected international locations. For the last two decades, the Foundation has focused a significant portion of its financial resources on Southeastern Massachusetts, where its office is located. Here the Board seeks to understand how communities grow sustainably and equitably, how to increase educational opportunities, how rural and urban economies are intertwined, and how to best protect working landscapes and the people who rely upon these areas for their livelihoods. In funding in a few specific areas, the Board believes it will have the most impact. Island Foundation Five-Year Report: 2010-2014 3 Environment In Southeastern Massachusetts, Maine, and Rhode Island, the Island Foundation promotes the conservation of marine and coastal resources. For many years, the Foundation has given priority to North Atlantic right whale research, protection of coastal waterbird habitat, and preservation of coastal lands. More recently, the Board has been interested in new initiatives that: • link climate change, renewable energy, and regional planning and support those most impacted by climate change; • support working landscapes (sustainable agriculture and community-based fisheries) and the people who rely on them for their livelihoods; • help local conservation organizations strengthen their own capacity; • connect community health, quality of life, and environmental conservation; and • promote environmental justice and seek to include the voices of those most affected by environmental harms. Alternative Education The Island Foundation supports a limited number of experiential education programs, after-school programs, and alternative education schools, with an emphasis on ensuring educational access for underserved populations. Drawing on its tradition of seeking alternative and unconventional approaches, the Island Foundation looks for informal and school-based programs that connect young people to their natural world, foster an appreciation for community service, and respect individuals with diverse backgrounds and learning styles. Maritime trades, hands-on marine education, and programs that increase access and opportunity for at-risk youth are of particular interest. 4 Island Foundation Five-Year Report: 2010-2014 New Bedford The Foundation works with organizations that promote progressive social change and combat discrimination in all its forms in New Bedford. In this historic city, the Foundation supports youth programs, community development, arts and culture, and basic needs. The Foundation funds groups that have community-wide recognition and support and demonstrate a positive vision for the present and future of New Bedford. Within the New Bedford program area, the Board currently seeks proposals addressing: • youth educational attainment, life skills, and career preparation, with an emphasis on workforce development for at-risk youth ages 16-24; • strategies to address food insecurity; • assistance for immigrants; • activities that increase civic engagement, access, and inclusion; • appreciation for the history and cultures represented in this community; and • professional development/capacity building for the nonprofit sector. Global From local to global, we live in world where everything is interconnected. And by making connections to the issues it cares about, the Foundation is able to have an impact on change that supports a just and sustainable world. The Foundation supports a small number of global programs that mirror the values in its other priority areas, and it also supports projects that: • ensure the rights of indigenous peoples and women; • protect those most vulnerable to climate change; • empower local communities to drive their own development; • provide access to quality healthcare for the poor; and • promote sexual and reproductive health education and rights.
