Module 6 Letter - Newark City Schools

Math Connections for Parents
Grade 3 Module 6
Collecting and Displaying Data
Welcome to Third Grade Module 6. In Module 6, students will
work with a data set to draw picture and bar graphs. They will
use their knowledge of measurement to draw a scale for their
graphs. Then they will use the graphs to solve word problems.
Students will also work with rulers and line plots, where the
scale might be whole numbers, halves or even quarters.
Important Words and Concepts
 Axis: vertical or horizontal scale in a graph
 Frequent: most common measurement on
a line plot
 Measurement data: e.g. length
measurements of a collection of pencils
 Scaled graphs: bar or picture graph where
the scale uses units with a value greater
than 1
 Survey: collecting data by asking a question
and recording responses
 Line plot: display of measurement data on
a horizontal number line
KEY STANDARDS
 Draw a picture
graph and bar graph
to represent a data
set. Make sure the
scale is correct (for
example, draw a bar
graph in which each
square in the bar
graph might
represent 5 pets).
 Solve one and twostep problems using
information in a bar
graph. Problems
will be “how many
more” and “how
many less”
 Measure lengths
Multiplication and Division within 100
Fluency of multiplication and division facts, up to 100
will continue to be stressed in third grade. In this
module, students will be working with fractions from
the previous module. Students need to be fluent in
counting by 2s or 5s in order to think about adjusting
their scales to fit their graphs.
using rulers marked
with halves and
fourth of an inch.
 Show data in a line
plot.
