6th Edition of Herb Book off the Press!

Shipards Herb Farm - Newsletter November 2013
6th Edition of Herb Book
off the Press!
Welcome
This year has been busy with preparing "How can I use
Herbs in my daily life?" ready for the 6th print run.
With this reference book, we made up-dates where necessary of botanical names, added accounts people have
shared with us of using herbs and additions to the comfrey
chapter, and even several typo's deleted. Also added, recent research on various herbs, plus a new chapter on
Leaf Ginseng, to give new information to benefit readers.
Leaf Ginseng is one of my favourite salad herbs, which I enjoy using daily, in salads, as
a garnish and in smoothies. This easy to grow herb is valued for energy, concentration
and stamina, blood building and as a tonic and strengthening the immune system. The
6th Edition is indeed a culmination of 10 years of information of herbs, and everyday
uses that many people have shared with me. Continually we receive such positive feed
back from readers, saying that the book is so practical and easy to read and many people share with us wonderful accounts of improved health when using the herbs.
Sofi wrote: "You are a true wealth of knowledge and your passions are beautifully portrayed through your work, in turn, impassioning your readers. The magic of plants has
me very much inspired."
Barbara emailed: "Thank you for your amazing books. They have inspired me to become a Naturopath, and begin my course shortly."
Tricia said: "I purchased your big Herb Book about 18 months ago, and I am always
reading through it. It is the best book."
Danny said: "I am a huge fan of your books. They are so informative! I just love to read
and re-read."
Judi wrote: "I am constantly referring to information from your books. Thank you for the
wonderful insight into the world of herbs."
When planning your Christmas gift giving, you might like to consider giving the Books or
DVDs as gifts. In the past many people who received these Books or DVDs as gifts
have said how much they appreciated them, and that they regularly refer to and read. I
certainly did not ever consider that the books would become best sellers, but I am so
glad that people find them such practical references.
About Herbs, and properties
of plants...
** Rosemary Helps With Scalp Circulation
Rosemary is a traditional herb for the hair and
has been used over the years as a hair tonic and
for scalp circulation.
Rosemary oil features in perfumes, toiletries,
soaps, cosmetics, pot-pourri, shampoos and conditioners. To make a Hair Tonic take a handful of
rosemary leaves, cut or bruise, cover with a cup
of boiling water, steep and strain. Pour through
the hair after shampooing, rubbing into hair and
massaging the scalp. The aroma of the infusion, will give the brain and body a pleasant
lift of energy. For a folklore recipe to thicken and used to re-grow hair, pick a handful of
rosemary and put in a container with 1 teaspoon borax and 1 teaspoon camphor crystals, and 2 cups of boiling water, cover container. When cool strain and refrigerate. Pour
a little liquid into the hands and rub through the hair 1 - 2 times a day. Also, for good hair
growth it is recommended that we add lots of iron rich foods to the daily diet - leafy
greens like purslane, sheep sorrel, watercress, Queensland greens, salad mallow,
sweet leaf bush and sambu lettuce.
Next newsletter I will share information on some easy to grow salad herbs that are my
favourites.
** Licorice Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is a perennial herb that is esteemed by herbalists due to
the roots valuable properties. It is the root of the
plant that gives the flavour and sweetening action,
and hundreds of substances have been identified
in licorice, including a series of compounds known
as flavonoids, and multiple plant phytoestrogens.
Another common name for licorice is "sweet root",
because it contains a compound that is around 50
times sweeter than sugar, but with very low calories. For thousands of years licorice has been
used in both food and as a medicine. Eastern and
Western medicine have used licorice to treat a variety of illnesses, from the common cold, to liver
disease. Herbalists also commonly suggest the
root for anti-depressant effects, similar to that of
St. John's Wort. Licorice is valued as an antiinflammatory due to the constituent called glycyrrhizin. Traditional herbal practitioners
use licorice root to treat various ailments as it is a herb valued for strengthening, restoring and rejuvenating the body. Licorice works on the digestive, respiratory, nervous, reproductive, endocrine and excretory systems. Licorice has been used to calm the mind,
nourish the brain and increase cerebrospinal fluid; to benefit vision, voice, complexion,
hair, stamina, and to strengthen the immune system. Licorice root added to other herbs
when making a tea has a catalyst effect - to make the other herbs more effective to the
body.
Research scientists have reported studies that show
licorice root can kill the major bacteria responsible
for tooth decay and gum disease, the leading
causes of tooth loss in children and adults. Scientists say that licorice could have a role in treating
and preventing tooth decay and gum disease. Why
not grow some licorice for the root to chew on or
make as a tea.
Neem
** Kath regularly includes a few leaves of neem
(Azadirachta indica) or king of bitters (Andrographis paniculata) in her herbal tea. Mosquitoes
think she is too bitter to bother biting her. Kath is
happy. These two herbs provide many advantages
to well-being... so Kath gets multiple benefits!
** Herb Robert (Geranium robertianum) continues
to be the most requested herb at the Herb Farm, as more people tell family and friends
the benefits they have experienced with
using the herb. Herb Robert is an excellent
source of germanium, the mineral that research shows - helps take oxygen to the
cells. Use this herb for valuable tonic and
therapeutic healing properties and to
strengthen the immune system. Julie called
at the Herb Farm recently and said I have
been taking herb robert regularly for a few
years and giving it to my cat, and also to
everyone I love.
** A lass called at the Herb Farm in October
and mentioned she had an unpleasant headache. I said to take a couple leaves off the
feverfew plant (Chrysanthemum parthenium), and
as the leaves are bitter I brought her a glass of water to follow. Within a few minutes the lass said
that the headache disappeared. Great! Feverfew is
valued for a range of conditions. Uses have included: relief from coughs, wheezing, sinus congestion, flatulence, premenstrual tension and pain,
infertility, hormone imbalance and menopause disturbances, incontinence, eczema, psoriasis, splitting and weak finger nails, car sickness, fevers,
drug addiction, intestinal worms, stress and hysteria, high blood pressure, inflammation of tendons, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondilitus
and osteoarthritis.
** Curled Salad Mallow (Malva verticullata var.
crispa) is a wonderful plant to grow with attractive
frilly leaves. A hardy annual to 1 metre, fast growing; use leaves raw and cooked and as a tea;
many health benefits (similar to marshmallow).
Chickpea curry, salad greens and avocado garnished with nasturtium flower
Tomato, zucchini, leaf ginseng, comfrey,
plantain, tumeric, garlic, ginger, lemongrass,
Thai coriander, sweet leaf, Sambu lettuce,
nasturtiums, alfalfa flower, pinto pea flower
** Steven shares his experiences of using sprouts daily: "For the last 3 and a half
years I have made sprouts a central part of
my afternoon and evening meals and I can
attribute much of my increased strength gains and improved fitness and health to their consumption. Many
people have stated that after eating sprouts regularly
they can feel the health benefits which is fantastic, but I
think it's also interesting to see what a food is capable of
when the body is faced with intense training and exercise. From my experience over the last three and a half
years of introducing a number of different protein
sources, various protein powders, eggs, vegetables, fish
(no red meat) I always return to sprouts as they are the
simplest to digest and don't leave me feeling tired after
consuming them so I can get more out of a workout. I
always feel ill at ease if I haven't germinated and
sprouted the previous day as I know I'll have to settle for
second best and my training will be compromised from
having to rely on slower digesting (and in my opinion,
nutritionally inferior) protein sources. I would recommend for people who are training
intensively to give sprouts a try, either as a primary protein source or to supplement your
current protein intake and just see how it goes. I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised
and continue to incorporate sprouts into your diet after seeing and experiencing the results."

This From Jason Himself:
"Juicing has changed my life beyond all recognition. I used to smoke 40-60 cigarettes a
day; I like my drink (as they say) I was more that partial to the odd bit of junk food, and
as a result, I was also fat. On top of that I had severe asthma to the point where I had to
use the blue and brown inhalers and was having 10-16 puffs a day on them. I also developed eczema, mild acne, bad hay fever, and very, very, severe psoriasis. In short, I
wasn" t exactly in the best of health and my energy levels were often right through the
floor.
I am now in the fortunate position of being free from smoking, drinking and junk food.
My asthma has vanished, my eczema and acne have gone my Psoriasis has cleared by
over 90% and I am no longer overweight. In fact, on the health front I" m one happy
camper! I am now also lucky to be able to help people who find themselves in a similar
position to the one I was in."

This segment in the Newsletter, gives snippets and experiences, from other people, as it
is these very 'down to earth' uses, which have given people better health. These experiences can encourage other people, to give herbs a go.
Hello folk at Shipards Herb Farm,
Just wanted to share more anecdotal evidence with you guys (although you surely have
stacks and mountains of it)... I was really surprised to discover that a drink I had "made
up" off the cuff was written out in basically the same proportions in Isabell's Herb Book
on the Ginger Chapter. I call it Zingade because it tastes zingy and makes me feel zingy
too! Instead of only using a cup of hot water though, I put that amount of ingredients into
about a litre and a half jug, ginger first (grated), then lemon - stir it until all the ginger
has become pink then add hot water + honey, then top it up and drink it cold/tepid; and I
eat the ginger when I get to the bottom and it is much milder (I guess it's been marinated by the lemon when it turns pink) than 'fresh'. I have found that Zingade is a million
times (or, several hours) more effective at keeping me awake at night than caffeine, minus the jitters. I also drink it in the morning when I know I have big days of 'hard-labour'
ahead of me i.e. wheel-barrowing, shoveling etc. Sometimes I add mint on a hot day for
an interesting contrast in flavour and 'feel'. Therefore I definitely agree and excitedly
support that the mixture counteracts "drowsiness and lack of energy"
Cheers, Carleon.
A lady called at the Herb Farm in November 2013 saying how practical the Herb Book is
in her daily life. She read in the Aloe Chapter about using aloe for vaginal itch (also referred to as vaginal thrush). The lady shared with me that using aloe gave her immediate relief from the itch and not only that, using the aloe also eliminated vaginal dryness.
