The opinions within are those of the writers and do not necessarily represent the views of the PHCA. This publication is available to members in good standing of the Pharaoh Hound Club of America only. As we enter 2016, please remember your requirement to complete the annual health survey on your dogs on the OFA web site at http://www.offa.org . Editor’s Note Here we go, Statistics are in for 2015 and once again, Pharaoh Hound Nation was pretty busy. Top Dog Breed, All Breed, Lure Coursing Top twenty, Obedience. Looks like Pharaohs are into everything, I can barely keep up. Barn Hunt, Nose Work, Weight Pull, our breed is so versatile. And so are the breeders, owners and handlers who give our breed the opportunities to accomplish so much. I am deeply concerned with the end of 2015 and the beginning of 2016 in terms of what is going on in the world of Pharaoh Hound Rescue. We usually have no Pharaoh Hounds in rescue, with an occasional single Pharaoh Hound coming through the Rescue Committee that needs a new home. Darleen Between December and January, the Rescue Committee is aware of no less than 15 Pharaoh Hounds that are in potential need of the assistance of the PHCA. This is far and away the greatest number of Pharaoh Hounds that have potentially needed help in the twelve years I have been involved with the breed. Bearing in mind that not all of these situations involve PHCA members, thus giving us little or no say over the outcome of where these Pharaoh Hound puppies will end up, there are at least two situations involving PHCA members, a fact that is reprehensible in my opinion. President’s Message Hello All: I hope that the New Year finds you and your hounds all healthy and happy!! As most of you probably know by now, I am happy to still be here in 2016 after undergoing emergency brain surgery in November. I was very fortunate to have an excellent neurosurgeon who achieved an excellent result. (Please feel free to insert your joke about whether they found a brain during my surgery here...I assure you, I have heard them all). My prognosis is excellent and I also got the benefit of getting a preview of what I will look like should I ever go bald. May all of your brain surgeries go as well, my friends. Please, please, please bear in mind your club and ethical responsibilities when deciding to proceed with breeding a new litter without having the properly screened and committed homes where your puppies are going. Also remember your club and ethical responsibilities to be committed to be responsible for EACH AND EVERY puppy associated with your breeding for that dog's LIFETIME. Do not take refuge in the position that as the owner of the sire of the litter you bear no obligations for the lifetime of that litter. YOU DO. If you cannot make that commitment - for ANY reason - whether it be because of space restrictions or finances, or any other reason, that is a breeding that SHOULD NOT take place under the PHCA's ethical rules and guidelines. Fifteen Pharaoh Hounds in potential need of the help of PHCA Rescue is a staggering number that is not only heartbreaking, but repugnant. I hope we will all do what is best for the breed we love and cherish so much. The residencies are to be renewed and expanded to four major institutions. Theriogenology is the branch of veterinary medicine that focuses on reproduction, including the physiology and pathology of male and female reproductive systems of animals and the clinical practice of veterinary obstetrics, gynecology, and andrology. The American Kennel Club (AKC®), the world’s largest purebred dog registry, the Theriogenology Foundation and the AKC Canine Health Foundation announced that the recently established American Kennel Club/Theriogenology Foundation Companion Animal Residencies in Theriogenology are being renewed and expanded to four universities in 2016. Since 1884, the AKC has recognized that the pedigree is the best tool for improving canine health temperament and working skills. The ever-changing world of clinical theriogenology and genetic testing has given breeders the necessary tools to produce healthier litters and puppies with predictable temperaments that fit into owners’ lifestyles. Through this grant, the AKC and CHF acknowledge that meeting the needs of their members means investing in the education of the next generation of veterinary specialists. All of the residencies are made possible by generous grants from the AKC and the AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) and are for new residents who begin their studies in 2016. The programs will exist at Auburn University, North Carolina State University, The Ohio State University and University of Pennsylvania. Each grant is in the amount of $100,000, to be used for study over 2-3 years. Existing residencies funded through this grant in 2014 and ending this year were for programs at University of California/Davis, Auburn University and University of Pennsylvania. “We are proud to partner with the Theriogenology Foundation to continue our ongoing commitment to canine health research,” said Dennis Sprung, President and CEO of the AKC. “Helping to cultivate future veterinarians and health researchers is essential to the wellbeing of all dogs. We look forward to seeing their contributions to canine wellness.” “Purpose-bred dogs make valuable contributions to our society from helping those with disabilities to public safety,” said Dr. Charles Franz, Executive Director of the Theriogenology Foundation. “These dogs have genetically predetermined traits that are essential to the jobs that they do.
