(A pictorial of the more traditional Doberman colors for you a$ to enjoy.)
People who aren’t familiar with the breed quickly recognize the black and tan cropped and
docked Doberman or the red and tan cropped and docked. They are easy to identify and are very
aristocratic to behold, but we love them all, cropped and docked, natural ears or even natural tails.

Here we have the Quintessential
Doberman. Quinn is a very handsome

A JOB FOR JAMIE
By Carol McMorris
My name’s Carol. More importantly my
dog’s name Is Jamie. Jamie came our way eight
years ago when our first Dobie Xena died. We
wanted a pal for Cassie (our other Dobie). We
were looking at dogs at the Humane Society
but Cassie shied away from all other dogs, until
they approached us, asking if we would be
interested in a 10-12 month old Dobie who was
being relinquished by her owners. As soon as
Cassie saw Jamie she adopted her. Cassie
became her mother, mentor, and personal
anchor. The two had dispositions that were 180
degrees apart but bonded perfectly.
Then within a couple of years we lost my
husband and Cassie. Jamie had always been
extremely excited around other dogs, but
Cassie kept her calm. Now she was obsessed
with other dogs, especially small dogs. She
challenged large dogs, and bullied small dogs,
children, and people who appeared frightened
of her. I lived in fear of what might happen and
after a skirmish with a dog visiting a neighbor,
I contacted Doberman rescue about trying to
find another home for her. I was put in contact
with a dog trainer who gave me advice on reestablishing dominance and handling her
behavior towards other dogs. Jamie improved
greatly, although she never became truly
trustworthy with other dogs.
After a few years we moved in with my good
friend and now fiancé. Mark was not a dog
person, but he did his best to get a handle on
Jamie. We had a tougher time with Mark’s son
Sean. Sean, who had recently turned 21 has
Down Syndrome and some autistic behavior,
had a hard time with Jamie. Although he was
used to large dogs, he and Jamie just didn’t
c o n n e c t . He m a d e m o v e s s h e f o u n d
unpredictable and she was nervous around him.
At points, she took to waiting around corners
for him and then lunging and barking at him.
Sean was a real trooper and typically just would
look at us in puzzlement. We knew they
needed to get to know each other better and
that Sean needed to establish his dominance.
We had Sean start taking Jamie on walks
through Elmwood Park. It would give them
structure to their relationship and give both
needed exercise.
Sean shows we$ deserved pride in his dog-walking
!
PAGE 14
DOBERMAN RESCUE OF NEBRASKA
NOVEMBER 2012
Walking at first was not appealing to Sean,
but very quickly it became the highlight of
his visits. It took a while, but Sean learned
the commands Jamie was familiar with and
Jamie learned his style. In the process of
walking Jamie, Sean has picked up a lot of
skil ls. Always someone who whispers
hoarsely rather than talking clearly, he has
learned to speak up louder and more clearly.
His vocabulary has increased as he has
learned new commands; and his street
crossing skills have improved.
When runners or bikers approach, he brings
her in onto a short leashed walk. When other
dogs come near, he turns her over to me. He
notices when she is nervous, tells her “easy”
and brings her into a walk if needed.
He has mastered many new skills- how to put
on her harness, connect the leash, use the
break on the flexi-leash, even to lock and
unlock the house. He can untangle her and
turn pirouettes when she runs circles around
us. He has also mastered many social skillsas Jamie is still nervous around other dogs, he
has to keep his head up and pay attention to
everything around him.
!
He has also overcome a strong aversion to
having her touch his hand, and will now give
her treats. In the house it’s not unusual to
find that
Jamie has sought out Sean to say hello and to
get a few pats. And Sean’s bedtime routine is
not complete without Jamie chasing him up
the stairs to his room.
All this is pretty cool for a dog no one
wanted and that at more than one point I
thought might be beyond redemption!

THE DOGS
NEED YOU!
It’s been a tough year in rescue due
to the economy. We have treated 5
heartworm positive dogs and now have
two dogs with leg injuries.
Both Bella and Chance were victims of
being tethered and left unattended and
their legs became entangled in the
tether. Both have serious leg wounds
that are requiring a lot of medical care
to bring healing. They did not come in
together or from the same area. Both
were relayed in from different areas
after being left to die because their
former owners could not afford the
vetting costs.
Chance (above) and Be$a - are now healing
&om their injuries.
Doberman Rescue of Nebraska greatly needs your help.
Donations are way down this year, but these dogs get
saved only because people donate. The rescue survives on the donations of generous people like you who care
about these dogs.
Please remember that all donations are tax deductible as we are a 501 c 3.
Donations can be given through Paypal on our website at www.doberescue-ne.org or mailed to:
Doberman Rescue of Nebraska

We greatly appreciate your taking the time to read this and considering giving a donation, or even becoming a
monthly donor.

Hello there. My name’s Rob and if my handsome face doesn’t steal your heart
then well, have your pulse checked to see if you have one! I am a friendly sweet
fellow whose life has not been easy but I don’t let the past get me down. I look to
the future. I believe in being a gentleman at all times.
I was dumped and left to fend for myself but then I was rescued. My heartworm
treatments have been complete and I am ready to go now.
I am a great people lover and I get along with other dogs although I would do
better with a less pushy one my own size.
Do you have room in your life for a big hunk of a guy like me who has the face
and a personality to match? Ask for me at www.doberescue-ne.org

M y name is Yeager and I am 3-4 years old. I came into rescue after being abandoned and my
heart is lonely and looking for a new family. I long for the loving touch of humans and if you pet
me I will stand all day and just drink it in. It feels so good to be loved. Now don’t get me wrong,
I’m not a moody kind of guy. I am actually quite a happy fellow with a clownish sense of humor.
I’ll talk to you too and am very expressive. (note: Yeager has a variety of vocalizations – not just
barking- he makes that all mean something. He really does communicate and it’s charming.) If
you get to know me you will see what it is I am trying to say. Oh, how I wish people could speak
“dog” so communication was easier! By the way, I can be quiet too and I’m not one who can’t
hold his peace.
My foster sister Samantha has taught me how to play. She’s kind of bossy sometimes but that’s
ok. We play hard and it’s fun. My foster dad won’t let me up on the furniture but I keep asking.
That sofa sure looks comfy. I will put one paw up on it and look at him to see if maybe this time
he will say yes. I make him laugh. He says I have a great sense of humor.
Life has taught me to be exuberant and to live each day to the fullest and I truly do. Adopt me
and you will get someone who appreciates you, loves attention, is athletic, has a sense of humor
and will even have conversations with you. How many dogs do you know who do that? One last
thing: I don’t care for cats! Ask for me at www.doberescue-ne.org.

President’s Message
Hello Everyone,
!
!
!
by Ho$i Sampson
We are nearing closure of 2012 in just a little over a month. What a busy year it has been so far and there
is still much left to do.
We will again feature a Christmas Tree at the General Dodge House in Council Bluffs. It will be in the
Ballroom once again this year and be up for viewing in late November. Check it out and see what the
imaginative volunteers have come up with this year! We enjoy doing this every year and giving back to
the community. The funds to do the tree come from our volunteers themselves who also spend the time
to plan and decorate and take down the decorations. The wonderful folks over at the Historic Dodge
House are always fun to work with and make it a very good experience.
We will also have several Santa Claws dates coming up in Omaha and Lincoln Petsmarts so watch your
local stores and come out and help support the events which are special fundraisers.
Medically the rescue has seen a lot of challenges this year. We have treated 5 heartworm dogs and now
have two with leg injuries(see separate article). We continue to be blessed with the ability to help those
dogs who come to us in need and we are so grateful for our hard-working volunteers and our supporters
and adopters who all work together to make this happen. We have much to be thankful for!
We are always in need of more volunteers and fosters and supporters as the need continues to grow and
not abate in the difficult times we all live in. Being a volunteer is very rewarding. Any interested person
can contact us through [email protected].
This edition features the traditional dominant Doberman colors: black and red to go along with the fall
season and holidays and a short section on Halloween costumes with pictures.
We also have a special story about Jamie, a dog who nearly lost her home until her owner discovered a
special job for her to do – very inspirational.
We are sad to announce that there will not be any further Adventures of Super Walker. Our wonderful
hero passed away on September 13th very suddenly after coming down with a rare brain infection. We all
miss him very much and our hearts go out to Cory and Jennifer who loved him so. They are healing with
the love and support of many and Sheebs and Carlie are carrying on bravely without their brother. We
will be doing a feature on him in our next issue.
It is our hope that where ever life has taken you at the moment you are reading this that you are safe and
blessed and we wish you all of our best. Thank you for your kind support and we will see you next issue.
