SRK tools company in
Ekattuthangal,
Guindy,
has not just two huge CNC
(computer numerical control) machines inside but
also many happy faces and
joyful stories. For Krishna
Radhakrishan, 37, who
owns the firm, the company
is her third child after
Ashwin and Akshai. And
the seven workers, found
always in greasy pants and
sweaty T-shirts, are her
energy
boosters.
Ms
Radhakrishan was just
another housewife two
years ago. But this B.A. history graduate was always
interested in learning new
things. “I wanted to help
others, but I am against the
usual kind of giving donations or providing food. I
understood my calling
when I met WEAT (women
entrepreneurs association
of Tamil Nadu) volunteers,”
recalls
Ms
Radhakrishan. She chose
be an entrepreneur.
“I learnt that CNC programming was a male-dominated job and it would be
tough for a woman to win
in that field.” With the
moral support of her hus-
Krishna Radhakrishnan
band Radhakrishan, a
senior executive in a private firm, and financial
support through WEAT,
she managed to start her
firm in November 2010 with
one CNC machine at an
investment of `25 lakh.
Fluent in Hindi, she provided jobs to five men from
Bihar and two Tamil men.
“I received small orders for
making brake shoe for bus
and other spare parts for
electronic goods through
an outsourcing firm,” she
says. Now she has bought a
second CNC machine for
the firm that operates 24
hours. As the president of
WEAT — Chennai she now
enthuses other women
entrepreneurs.
Ms Rahamat Fathima, 30,
of Tindivanam, over 100 km
from Chennai, helped her
husband earn dignity.
Though her husband, auto
driver Akbar, 30, worked
hard, he couldn’t earn
much. Being an auto driver
was considered a low-profile job in his neighbourhood. It was Ms Fathima
who alerted him about a
course in value addition in
mushroom products by TN
agricultural university.
“With my wife convincing
me, both of us attended the
training classes in 2006 and
earned a diploma in mushroom snack preparation,”
says Mr Akbar. Now he is
confident of providing good
education for his two girl
children — three-year-old
Sumaya and one-year-old
Sharmila.
“We started our bakery,
‘Bismi Foods’, and provided value-added mushroom
snacks like soup, samosa,
cutlet and mushroom pizza.
We are supplying snacks to
companies in Tindivanam
and Vellore. Shortly, we
will expand to Chennai,”
says Ms Fathima, who
earns at least `10,000 a
month.

APPY WOMEN'S DAY TO ALL. I
am proud to be a woman.
A young enthusiast Gayathri Om has
always been involvedin the process of
education since her earliest years of
schooling. Married to Om Saravanan,
director, Poppy’s Group, and Correspondent, Vedanta Academy, her aesthetic
sense and natural academic skills have
come to the forefront as they gain expression through the two schools located at
Tirupur and Coimbatore.
“Children these days are smart, inquisitive and have a thunder bolt of a brain.
Every child is unique and is gifted with
potential talent. To identify this potential
and provide these little gems with all the
needed opportunities from across the
globe, is most important for them to excel
head on. I also belive inculcating moral
values and life skills with the roots of
Indian wisdom is definitely important.
All this, I believe, can be achieved only
through schooling,” she says.
“Not only do we get to provide to the
children, but what we learn from them —
these free thinkers, truly are amazing.
Education through freedom of thought
and creativity is what we aim at. To not
confine and draw boundaries to the
thought process of these little people I
believe is very important,” she also adds.
From the unique Kindergarten Activity
Room at Coimbatore to the artistically
designed classrooms, Ms Gayathri Om’s
touch is evident in every nook and cranny — With a vision that is far — seeing
and a mission so close to her heart we
might well expect wonders with the projects.

everything with immense strength.
Whatever we do, let us do it with joy, from
our hearts. Nothing is impossible as long
as we focus on our goals and move forward
with perseverance. Let us not be harsh on
ourselves; nothing is hard when we learn
to accept things that cannot be changed
and enjoy the silver lining.
Let us unfold the passion within, love
eternally and live a glorious life, embracing the pride of being a woman, by living
womanhood in every moment. We are rich
in our hearts; the more we love and give
the more abundance will fill our hearts
and lives. Let the divine light of womanhood within… flow, heal and uplift the
world around us. Let us celebrate our
blessed womanhood and continue our day
to day service.
Dear Woman… Love yourself, be happy,
feel good and live life!.
Till a few years ago, some
of the backward regions in
western Tamil Nadu practiced female infanticide,
child marriages and perpetrated a variety of other
injustices against women
as they were generally considered a burden which
had to be disposed of as
early as possible.
Things have thankfully
changed due to the intervention of various NGOs
and other interest groups
and this trend is gradually
reversing. Women, who are
considered harbingers of
good luck in business communities, are now seen in a
similar light in agrarian
families too.
In Kovai, however, women are truly liberated. Here
is the success story of a
woman entrepreneur who
made it to the top by creating a record of sorts by
churning an annual turnover of `2.30 crore from a
pump spare parts manufacturing unit. Interestingly,
she did not even know the
basics of running a factory
as she was a home-maker.
Said S. Senthil Vadivu, “I
felt as if life was doomed
when I lost my husband
Shanmugam and my 13year-old son in a road acci-
Senthil Vadivu

the affairs at the

dent near Courtallam on
May 22, 2004.”
However, she put on a
brave face and took over
her husband’s factory. She
was also encouraged by
scores of well-wishers, which enthused her further.
“Initially, I had to learn
the nuances of spare manufacturing for submersible
pumps. My hard work paid
off as I developed the unit
further to raise the turnover from a meagre `30 lakh
in 2004 to `2.30 crore within
a year,” she said with
pride.
It is interesting to note
that Ms Senthil Vadivu started to manage the affairs
at the factory within 18
days of her husband’s death. Before signing off, she
said, “Behind every successful man, there is a woman, but for me it was my
late husband, who was instrumental in my success.”
APPY WOMEN’S DAY TO
ALL. I am proud to be a
woman.
Today women are coming out of
their shells and shedding their shackles. Women have achieved a lot in
the past and the future is something
to be looked forward to. In all the
fields women are setting an example.
In our college we do have a lot of
women lecturers and the ratio of our
girl students is also quite high. Each
year, depending on the marks, we
waive the tution fee for deserving
girl students ( two/year). Girls have
been consistent toppers also. Women
in general are hard workers, be they
office goers or homemakers. They
can don any role and succeed. My
message to women all over on this
wonderful day dedicated to God's
MOST BEAUTIFUL CREATION is Be
proud to be a woman, perserve and
you will succeed.
