Chapter 2: Natural Environment Assignments Ch. 2 Divider: Page 49/50 is your chapter divider page. Fold it in half twice and write Ch. 2 Natural Environment on it. Homework: Read Ch. 2. You should spend about 15 minutes a night on homework. It may take you a little longer or a little shorter. Monday night: Pre-read Ch. 2 (pp. 18-34). Make sure to look at all the subheadings, all the graphics, and the sidebars. Read the Chapter Keys on page 17. Read the introduction on page 18 and the summary on page 34. Skim the Chapter Review Activities on page 34. As proof of completing the Pre-Read you need to choose one of the following to complete and turn in: (1) outline the chapter by writing down all the headings/subheadings in the order they appear or (2) a four picture preview page with a one sentence caption for each. This assignment does not go in your notebook. It needs to be completed on your own lined or blank paper. Tuesday & Wednesday night: Read pages 19-27. Thursday & Friday night: Read pages 28-33. State Symbols: Purpose: To learn some interesting and useful information (i.e. state flower, state nickname) specific to Washington State. You will be able to: identify several Washington State symbols and facts. Will these be assessed: Yes, you will be asked to identify and describe a few of these on the unit test. Task: 1. Some of these symbols will be on the unit test. 2. Set this assignment up on pages 59-61 in your ISN. 3. At the top of pages 59, 60, and 61: write State Symbols 4. For each symbol, write the corresponding number and symbol; then underline it. Write three details in bulleted format to go with each symbol. 5. There are a total of 23 symbols and three pages allotted for this assignment. Use only three lines in your notebook per symbol. 6. Read the information on the assigned symbols. 7. These are your DO NOWS for chapter 2. I expect you to work quietly on these at the beginning of class each day. 1 Chapter 2: Natural Environment Assignments Washington State Map Activities Purpose: to familiarize yourself with the geography of Washington State. You will be able to: develop your map skills. You will locate places, use scale to find distances, use longitude/latitude, and more. How will these be assessed: You may be asked to use a map to find information on a test. You may have test questions that test the information you found from your assignment. Task: 1. You must complete current assignments and get permission from Mrs. Jasmer before beginning Map activities. 2. Set this assignment up on page 62 in your ISN. This assignment is allotted one page only in your ISN. If you need more space, use a flippy page. 3. At the top of page 62: write WA State Map Activity 1 4. You do not need to restate the question in your answer. 5. For each problem, write the number and the answer. You should need only one line per problem. Resources: 1. Maps in your textbook (appendix or in the chapter) 2. Laminated WA state maps 3. Other WA state maps provided Vocabulary: Purpose: understand important terms related to the chapter’s material How will these be assessed: usually through multiple choice or matching. Sometimes, you will be asked to use some of the vocabulary in a meaningful sentence that shows your understanding. Task: 1. Set this assignment up on page 51 of your ISN. This assignment is allotted one page in your ISN. If you need more space, use a flippy page. 2. At the top of page 51: write Ch. 2 Vocabulary 3. For each of the five vocabulary terms: write the definition and sketch a simple reminder picture. This is a modified version of the V3 Vocab assignment. No sentence is required and this should be done all on one page. 4. Give yourself about five lines per vocabulary term. 5. The following are your five vocabulary terms: (1) plain (2) climate (3) plateau (4) rain shadow and (5) local relief. 6. This assignment should take no longer than one class period. Unfinished work is homework. 2 Chapter 2: Natural Environment Assignments Chapter 2 Mountain Notes Purpose: take any notes needed on landforms and physical features. Much of Washington’s physical features are influenced by the Cascade Mountain Range. This is your space to take notes on the importance of the Cascade Mountain Range to Washington State. How this will be assessed: fill in the blank, multiple choice. There will also be an essay question on the unit test that is related to how the Cascade Mountain Range affects the different regions of Washington State. Task: 1. Set this assignment up on page 52 and 54. Do not use page 53 for this assignment. These should be set up in two-columns. 2. At the top of both pages 52 and 54: write Landform and Mountain Notes 3. Important topics for your left column are: physical features, landforms, Cascades Volcanoes, and Cascades as a Physical Barrier. 4. Take notes from the Powerpoint presentation and supplement if needed from your reading. Mountain Range Map Purpose: Identify the five major mountain ranges in Washington State and locate them on a map. How this will be assessed: fill in the blank or identification on a map. Task: 1. Set this assignment up on page 53 in your ISN. Turn your notebook sideways and title your map Washington’s Mountain Ranges 2. Draw an outline of Washington State. This must fill the entire page. 3. Color in the entire state then identify the mountain ranges with symbols/pictures and label them. 4. Identify and label the five major Volcanoes in the Washington Cascades. Landforms Diagram Purpose: understand the differences between different landforms based on high and low points of an area. How these will be assessed: matching—landforms to descriptions Task: 1. Set this assignment up on page 55 of your ISN. 2. At the top of page 55: write Landforms Diagram 3. Copy the diagram on page 20 of your textbook. This must fill the entire page. 4. Make sure to label each landform. You do not need to copy the elevation or local relief scales. 5. Annotated Climate Map Purpose: identify and describe the three general climates of Washington State How this will be assessed: matching—climates to descriptions Task: 1. Set this assignment up on page 57 in your ISN. Turn your notebook sideways and title your map Washington’s Climates 2. Draw an outline of Washington State. This must fill the entire page. 3. Color in the entire state then identify and outline the three climates. 4. For each climate section on your map provide 3-5 facts describing the climate. Do this in bulleted format. Rain Shadow Effect Purpose: to understand how the Olympics and the Cascades affect the climate on both sides of the mountains in Washington State. How this will be assessed: labeled illustration Task: 1. Set this assignment up on page 58 in your ISN. Turn your notebook sideways and title your diagram The Rain Shadow Effect 2. Draw and label as directed by Mrs. Jasmer Climate Paragraph Purpose: develop your writing skills, taking a position and effectively supporting your position. How this will be assessed: you will be assessed on the organization of your paragraph and the strength of support you provide for your position. Task: 1. Set this assignment up on page 56 in your ISN. You have one page allotted for this assignment. If you need more space, use a flippy page. 2. At the top of page 56: write Climate Preference Paragraph 3. In an 8+ sentence paragraph respond to the following prompt: Which of Washington’s climate regions (west coast marine, highland, or semiarid) would you most prefer to live in? You must state your choice, provide two reasons (RDFs) with commentary (Es, explanation) to support your choice. Your support must include details from the text. 4
