Elementary Summer Enrichment Classes Adventures In Science A fun-filled, hands on science adventure. Learn science by doing it. As Ms. Fizzle always says, “Get Messy! Take Chances! Make Connections!” all experiments and activities use common household items so budding scientists can repeat their experiments at home and demonstrate what they learned. Returning students are welcome. There are many NEW EXPERIMENTS (and a few returning favorites) planned for this summer. Grades 3, 4 (This class runs for 2 consecutive sessions) All about it: Reading and Writing Do you like to learn about the things that you love? In this nonfiction reading and writing class students will learn how to research non-fiction topics that they are interested in and use graphic organizers to organize their learning. Students will share their research and learn how to communicate their learning by writing and publishing non-fiction books. Grades 2, 3 Around The US In 23 Days Pack your bags for an exciting trip around the country! It’s going to be an action-packed journey traveling to a different region of the United States each week. Along the way, we will learn about the history, culture, entertainment, landmarks, and cuisine of each region of our beautiful country. Grades 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Around The World In 23 Days Explore five exciting cultures from around the world. Weekly, students will discover interesting facts, create art, try new foods, play games, listen to guest speakers, and celebrate! Grades 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Art Around The World Students will work with a number of medias including clay, paper mache, yarn, paint, drawing materials, and paper. They will create 2-D and 3-D projects, which could include animals, masks, puppets, and paintings. The student should bring in an old shirt or smock because we will get messy. Grades 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Computers 101 - Beginning/Novice Be a part of the Geek Squad this summer. Learn the basics or get a refresher! We will learn how to do a slide show, graphic design, spreadsheets, graphs, and explore The World Wide Web. Stretch your brain and have fun! Grades 1,2,3,4,5,6 Fiction and Fairy Tales Let your imagination go wild! Writers will learn how to make their characters come to life while also using visualization and their imagination to develop settings and additional story elements in this fun and engaging writer’s workshop class. Every great story starts with an idea- let’s take these ideas and turn them into published books! Grades 2, 3 Fitness And Fun Fitness and fun activities including Basketball, Badminton, Volleyball, Kickball, and Aerobic exercises and games are on the schedule for this program! Learning the techniques and procedure for these sports will be taught along with enjoying and practicing the sport with drills and games to enhance their skills. Each FUN-filled day will have different activities and workouts Grades 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Fun With Sign Language Learn how to sign songs and phrases as well as practical signs to help communicate with others. Sign language is fun to learn and a beautiful language. How would you like to be skilled in this area? Join the class! Grades 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Mathematics Olympics Be involved in your own Summer Olympics through sporting events, problem solving, data exploration, and mathematics. While participating in Olympic events you will be able to work with your class to find out how mathematics influences the Olympics. Join us for this math enrichment class for a fun and active learning opportunity! Grades 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Ocean Mania How would you like to be underwater explorers? If so, here is the chance to be “oceanographers.” In this class, students will engage in activities in which they will learn and explore our world’s oceans. The students will gain understandings of the geography, shores, reefs, and deep sea, including the animals, plants in each region. We will even dive into human interaction, focusing on hazardous that can harm the ocean and our beaches such as oil spills and littering. Grades 1, 2, 3 Reading Readasaurus This dinomite club is the perfect place to come for reading encouragement. Listen for the roar of enthusiasm and stomp right into the Readasaurus Club before it becomes extinct. Grades 1 & 2 Spanish Se habla esponal! Yes, Spanish is spoken here! In this dynamic course, the students learn basic Spanish words and phrases along with some geographical and cultural knowledge. Cooking, crafts, games, poems, and song are all incorporated into the class. Hop on board to learn about the Spanish culture. Grades 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Super Sleuths Calling all detectives!!! Your help is needed to solve the many cases in the AIS files (Adventures In Science). We will use our skills to check out the list of suspects. Help us narrow down the list and catch the guilty culprits. Some popular activities and experiments from Adventures In Science may also be conducted with a new twist. Grades 5, 6 (This class runs for 2 consecutive sessions) Theatre (Anyone absent from 2 or more classes will not have a speaking part) Could you be the next Kate Winslet or Jennifer Lawrence? How ‘bout James Vander beek, Leonardo DiCaprio, or Ben Stiller? Every actor started somewhere and most started in school plays and summer theatre. Once again this summer, Franklin is offering a course in summer theatre. You will learn set design, costume arranging, and how to apply stage make-up. You will get to show off your acting abilities as a cast member of the play selected for this summer’s show. Two sessions will again be offered. Grades 4, 5, 6 (This class runs for 2 consecutive sessions) Wild About Writing Do you love to write? Would you like an opportunity to be more descriptive and creative? Here is an opportunity to develop your poems and short stories as well as a variety of genres. This is a fantastic opportunity to discover the artist in you as a creative writer. Grades 4, 5, 6 Registration Information General Information CLASSES Summer School classes meet Monday through Friday, unless otherwise noted. BUS TRANSPORTATION Bussing will be available to Franklin Public School residents. See Summer School Transportation on the summer school website for additional information. Busing is only available if your child begins the day in Kids Club at Robinwood or directly to Summer School Session 1 at Pleasant View. Busing will also be provided from Summer School home when the day ends at 11:45 PM. Call 525-7634 with questions about transportation. Registration deadline for bus transportation is May 20th. Registration IMPORTANT Register your child for the grade your son/daughter will be entering in the Fall of 2017. (Pleasant View Office 423-4650). If you know in advance that your child(ren) will be absent, notify the office in writing or by phone. Phone calls will be made to the parents of students for unexcused absences. Online Registration All online registrations begin April 10th , 2017. You will receive confirmation on your classes after all registrations are complete. Mail-in or walk-in registrations are not accepted. SUMMER KIDS CAMP Call 423- 4646 for all questions about the Summer Kids Camp, early drop-off, and extended options. Registration deadlines The registration window will close on April 23, 2017, and will be enforced. Any class not meeting the minimum enrollment on April 23rd will be cancelled. Waitlist If a class is full you can add the child’s name to the on-line waiting list. If the waiting list is full you need to choose a different class.
