Define 'Success': Finding Meaning and Value at Work and in Life
Sponsored by
Ask ten different people to define success and you will receive ten different answers. Success is not necessarily a fixed
point, a standard, one-size-fits-all package, or any sort of concrete symbol. We all want to be successful, but first we
have to decide for ourselves what that "success" looks like, based on our experiences, values and personal goals.
Drawing from her years of experience offering advice on workplace issues, Karla Miller will open the conference with a
look into how we can find meaning and value in our workplace and life.
WORKSHOP BREAKOUT SESSION I
Annual Fund: Strategies for Success
Janet L. Hedrick, Director of Development, School Nutrition Foundation
Level: *100,200,300
This session will be a case study of an annual giving program that grew significantly in only one year.
The strategies that led to an annual fund growth of over 70% and a threefold increase in number of
donors will be discussed. Providing a state incentive for giving, using the annual conference effectively,
and obtaining a challenge gift for Giving Tuesday are just a few of the tactics that will be highlighted in the session. In
addition to the strategies that will be explored, the presentation will also include the lessons learned through the efforts
of the past year and what impact they had on plans for the current year. You will find ideas in this case study that you
may use or adapt to help you grow your Annual Giving program.
Paths to Success: Ways to generate new revenue streams through
your association's 501(c)(3) foundation
Ken Ashworth, Senior VP, Foundation Management Group, Inc.
Jenny Mottershead, J.D., M.A., President, Foundation Management Group, Inc.
James Olmsted, J.D., Vice President, Foundation Management Group, Inc.
Level: *200,300
Gone are the days when associations can be fully dependent on membership dues and registration
fees alone for financial stability. Revenue-generating activities such as a robust grants management
program can be critical components of your effort to build long-term sustainability. In this session,
participants will learn how to create a more diversified revenue stream based on grants to an
affiliated nonprofit that support its mission-driven programs. The 501(c)(3) has a clear advantage
over its 501(c)(4) or 501(c)(6) affiliate in its capacity to accept tax-deductible grants and donations.
Advantages to this type of revenue generation range from the ability to build a portfolio of grantor
‘partners’ (corporate and private foundations), government entities (federal, state and local), as well as individuals.
However, before thinking about new revenue sources, it is necessary to understand the grant-readiness of current
programs as well as the grants management process. Participants will gain the ability to bench-mark current grant
revenue against industry peers, learn the basics of a grants management revenue strategy, and the process to
implement it.
Campaign Readiness: Is Your Organization Prepared for Success?
Luke Driscoll, Managing Director, CCS
Paula Reed, Vice President of Development, Rheumatology Research
Foundation
Level: *100,200
Embarking on a campaign – whether for capital, programmatic, or endowment funds – is a major undertaking. When is
the right time to start a campaign? How do you know if your organization is ready? Join Paula Reed, Vice President,
Development at Rheumatology Research Foundation and Luke Driscoll, Managing Director, CCS, to learn about the
essential components for campaign success and how to know when the time is right to launch a major fundraising
initiative. Paula and Luke will share their experiences with successful association foundation campaigns built on strong
volunteer leadership, a compelling case for support, and strategies for identifying donor prospects. This session will
explore how to identify these factors and assess your organization’s readiness, as well as uncover common challenges
that may hold an association foundation back from achieving success. The presenters will also share advice and
experience in campaign timing, goal-setting, and partnering with your association.
KEYNOTE PLENARY
Allison Silberberg, Mayor of Alexandria, Virginia
Tapping into Your Inner Visionary
Sponsored by
Mayor Silberberg is writer and lifelong advocate for social justice issues. She will share her personal philosophy about
philanthropy from working with volunteers at the grassroots level to working with high impact organizations. She is the
author of “Visionaries In Our Midst: Ordinary People who are Changing our World,” and will reflect on the inspirational
people highlighted in the book, many of whom she met through her monthly fundraisers. This uplifting presentation will
illustrate how dedicated people can make a difference and encourage each of us to tap into our own inner visionary.
WORKSHOP BREAKOUT SESSION II
The Power of Partnership: Best Practices for Building a Strong Association-Foundation
Alliance to Achieve Fundraising Success
Karen Galuchie, Executive Director, IEEE Foundation
Daphne Halpern, FAHP, CFRE, Senior Director, CCS
Level: *200,300
With over 420,000 members in over 160 countries, IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organization
dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. In this session, we will explore how volunteers and staff
from both the Association and Foundation strategically aligned their priorities and initiatives in order to establish a
stronger partnership, accomplish goals, and further the organization’s mission. A historical review through the lens of
the IEEE Foundation will highlight key strategies for engaging your leadership and board, moving priorities through
strategic planning and implementation on both the association and foundation sides, and translating these priorities into
the successful planning and execution of a campaign. Experienced AFG members will come away with a better
understanding of how associations and their philanthropic arms can cohesively work together to achieve results.
Website Design for the Association Fundraiser: Tell Your Story & Raise
More Money
Rebecca Wueste, Director of Web & Social Media Strategy, ASCE
Natalie Zundel, CFRE, Director of Development, ASCRS Foundation
Level: *100,200,300
Our world is digital. And donors are deciding to give to your organization based not just on the appeals you carefully
craft, but upon your website, too. Not every organization has the ability to spend significant funds on a website redesign consultant, so join this session to learn from an experienced web professional and fundraiser – who’ve created
effective fundraising websites on budgets ranging from $25,000 to $1,000. You will walk away from this session able to
identify your user needs, develop a plan based on those needs, craft compelling language, and implement online
fundraising best practices.
Unlocking the Transformational Power of Major & Planned Giving in
Your Association Foundation
Barkley Payne, Executive Director, American Medical Association
Foundation
Brooks Scudder, MPA, Partner, Trek Advancement
Level: *100,200,300
Brooks and Barkley draw from their extensive experience working as professional fundraisers, association executives
and, in Brooks’ case, as a consultant. This program will help development professionals, association executives and
Board members understand the potential their organizations have for major and planned gifts and the keys necessary to
unlock them. In addition, participants will learn how to best engage and work with their boards to ensure proper
governance for sustainable success. The presentation will delve into realistic goal setting, portfolio building, governance
related to fundraising and readiness questions for planned giving programs. All topics are based on best practices and
lessons learned in the field.
WORKSHOP BREAKOUT SESSION III
Effectively Recruiting and Supporting Volunteer Leadership
Edward J. Cronin, Jr. CAE, CEO, AHRA Education Foundation
Holly Schambach, Executive Director, Association Development Solutions
Level: *100,200,300
Management of volunteers should be purposeful and strategic. Volunteers are busy with their “day jobs” and already
give back to their organizations by contributing time and thought leadership, making efficiency vital. Proper recruitment
and utilization of volunteers can be the difference between tremendous success or complete failure. Learn how one
foundation’s fundraising committee has exceeded their goals for more than a decade, setting new milestones and
achieving unprecedented participation along the way.
The Path to Professional Success: Career Planning for Association Fundraisers
Bob Corlett, Founder and President, Staffing Advisors
Katrina Dunn, Director of Development, American Fisheries Society
Paula J. Eichenbrenner, CAE, Executive Director, Academy of Managed Care
Pharmacy (AMCP) Foundation
Shelby Olson, PCC, Senior Consultant, Executive and Career Coach, Right
Management
Level: *100,200,300
Four perspectives on one panel: this is the place to ask all of your questions about
career development and association foundations! Landing a new job; succeeding in a
new role; personal branding, interviewing and networking; interacting with search
committees; and working with recruiters will all be addressed. Panelists include an
executive director at an association foundation, a development officer at an association, an executive search specialist
and an executive coach.
Finding A Needle In A Haystack: How To Identify Planned Giving Suspects In Your
Donor Pool
Heather R. Narvaez, J.D., Legacy Programs Manager, AARP Foundation
Level: *200
Most fundraisers dream of having a large donor/membership pool to select from when targeting their
planned giving marketing efforts. But what do you do when your pool is too big for your marketing
budget? Heather Narvaez, Legacy Programs Manager with AARP Foundation, will share the lessons she learned when
faced with a membership pool of over 35 million people over the age of 50 and over 2 million donors. Heather will
discuss which data points are more significant for different organizations when it comes to selecting the best planned
giving audience, marketing and qualification methods for every size budget, and how to determine appropriate follow
up activities for high priority leads.
