Don’t be trapped by dogma—which is living with the results of other
people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out

CLASS OF 2017 VALEDICTORIANS
Erin Cutts is the daughter of Joey and Sara Cutts. During Erin’s high school career, she
was actively involved in FBLA and was a member of the Girls’ Volleyball Team.
Erin plans to continue her education at South Dakota State University this fall where she
will major in Human Biology (pre-med). “After my four years at SDSU, I hope to attend
the University of Minnesota Medical School to receive my medical degree. I plan on
specializing in dermatology.” She was inspired to pursue a career in the medical field
after taking a Human Anatomy and Physiology course her junior year. Erin will also
focus on Volleyball as she continues her education.
A special memory from Erin’s high school experience is being a part of the Osceola Girls’ Volleyball Team. “Winning
conference and regional titles for volleyball will always be a proud memory for me.” As she continues to reflect on her
high school years, she would like to express the following, “Thank you to all of the teachers and classmates who have made
these past years so memorable.”
Lindsey Gearin is the daughter of John and Kim Gearin. During her career at Osceola, Lindsey
has participated in Cross Country and Soccer, along with being active in clubs such as the
Bowl Club and Math Team. Lindsey held office as National Honor Society President and Choir
Treasurer. She enjoyed being part of the Choir, Chamber Choir, Kinship program, and Chieftainto-Chieftain. Lindsey is a member of the National Honor Society.
Lindsey will be attending Earlham College in the fall where she will be majoring in Mathematics
or International Relations with a minor in Spanish. “I’m not completely sure what direction my
career will take me but I know I want to use my education to help other people. My teacher
Ms. Medcraft, has inspired me because she has shown me the power each person has to be a
positive force in the lives of others.” Lindsey will continue to sing in choir and practice ceramics
in college.
A memory from high school that she will always remember is the Heifer Trip. “I cannot even put into words what a big
impact this experience left on me. It redefined my perspective on the world. I’m so glad to have had passionate teachers
who gave me this opportunity.”
“I want to thank all of my teachers and the entire community because, as the saying goes, it takes a whole village to raise a
child. I’ve been really lucky to have amazing support all throughout my education. Osceola really is a special place.”
Cloe Lindh is the daughter of Dale and Ellie Lindh. Throughout high school, Cloe was involved
in sports that include Cross Country and Soccer, and participated in FFA, Bowl Club, Math Team,
and the Kinship Program. She held office as FFA President (junior and senior year) and National
Honor Society Vice President. Cloe was awarded a Badger Girls State Scholarship and is a
member of the National Honor Society.
Cloe is planning to continue her education at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay this fall
majoring in Design Arts with a minor in Biology. Her goal is to pursue a degree in Biomedical
Visualization. “When talking to my science teacher, Mrs. Ellefson, she encouraged me to inquire
about this graduate degree. I felt it was a perfect fit for my love of science and art.”
One memory Cloe will always remember from high school is her junior year Soccer team. “I
loved how much passion my team had as we played every game to the best of our ability. As
captain of this team, I was incredibly proud that our hard work gained us the title of Regional Champions.”
“Reflecting on high school, I realize how important this school was in developing my outlook on life. Osceola provided me
with teachers and classes that inspired me and taught me about so much. The whole district’s positive attitude left me with
aspirations to be optimistic and excited for my future. Where ever I go, I know I will remember all that Osceola did to help
me grow.”

Evan Wright is the son of Robert and Kymberly Wright. During his career at Osceola, Evan was
actively involved in Cross Country and Track-n-Field. He also participated in the high school’s
Math Team. Evan is a member of the National Honor Society.
Evan is currently undecided as to where to attend college this fall. “My top choices are
Williams College, Colby College, and Middlebury College.” He will be pursuing a major in
Political Science and Economics. “Through college, I hope to be involved in civic and political
activities and eventually hope to be in a position to run for office. I am driven by my belief that
government should work for all people and that our elected officials should be altruistic public
servants.” Evan also plans to focus on Cross-Country, Track, choral activities, and political and
civic activities as he continues his education.
A special memory for Evan was during his freshman year Track season. “Adam Solsrud told me
that he would shave his head if I ran a mile in under five minutes. At the last meet of the season, I finally succeeded when I
ran a 4:56 mile and Adam had to shave his head. I have not beaten that record since.”
Evan would like to thank his classmates, teachers and community for supporting the Osceola School District. “Without the
support of the students, staff, and community, the success of our school would not be possible.”

to continue to perform volunteer work and serve my community.” Jason credits his
parents and teachers for motivating him to choose this career path. As he continues his education, Jason hopes to be a
part of the football program, Accounting Club, and Athletes In Action.

as I can while furthering my education. There are many things I am passionate about and I hope
to discover even more.” Melanie plans to continue to play Tennis and join Band as she continues
her studies.
“One of my favorite memories has been competing in a Graphic Design event through FBLA with
a friend of mine. We placed first at Regionals and fourth at State giving us the opportunity to
compete at the National level this July in Anaheim, California!”
Melanie wishes to convey the following, “Everything will seem impossible until it is done. If you never push yourself, you will
never know how much you are capable of.”

Jazz Choir, Chamber Choir, and Acapella Pop Choir.
This fall, Madison will attend Iowa State University where she will major in Design. “I
expect to be very successful in college and beyond in my career. My motivation for
success came mainly from my teachers but also my mom and my peers.”
As Madison reflects on her high school experience, she admits, “I couldn’t just pick one specific memory that would sum up
the impact my Cross Country team has had on me. They have made me a stronger person with everything I do.”
Madison has a special message she would like to express, “I would like to say thank you for making my high school
experience phenomenal and for helping me get through some difficult times.”

OHS STUDENTS EARN WI GLOBAL SCHOLAR RECOGNITION
The Wisconsin Global Education Achievement Certificate is awarded
to graduating high school students who have demonstrated a
strong interest in global citizenship by successfully completing a
multi-dimensional global education curriculum and engaging in cocurricular activities and experiences that foster the development of
global competencies.
Global competence is the capacity and disposition to understand
and act on issues of global significance. Globally competent
individuals are aware, curious, and interested in learning about the
world and how it works. Employers are looking for these skills and
Elizabeth Link, Sydney Steivang, and Diego Lowney

interests in their employees, and colleges and universities seek students with the learning experiences validated by the
Certificate.
Global education in Wisconsin is a comprehensive initiative in public and private schools and institutes of high education.
The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction collaborates with all major education institutions and associations to
educate globally competent students who can fully participate in today’s interconnected world as responsible citizens and
successful participants in the global economy. Globally competent students have the knowledge required to understand
major world issues and different perspectives. Like their peers in other developed countries, they are proficient in several
world languages.
Osceola High School applied to be recognized as a school offering a global curriculum in the spring of 2016. For the first
time, students graduating from Osceola High School will be awarded the distinction of Wisconsin Global Scholar if they have
completed the following requirements:
• Four (4) credits in one world language
• Four (4) credits in courses with global content; one of those credits may be one year of a second world language
• Reflections on eight books (fiction or nonfiction), art, music, or film with global content
• Participation in schoolwide global activities
• A minimum of twenty (20) hours of global service learning and project presentation
Greta McCarty, Library Media Specialist for OMS and OHS facilitated the rigorous Global Scholar process with interested
students this year. Three students have earned Wisconsin Global Scholar recognition. Congratulations to Sydney Steivang,
Diego Lowney, and Elizabeth Link.
SUMMER MARCHING BAND - AN OSCEOLA TRADITION
Now that the OHS Band has completed their final concert performance of the year, it is time for band members to start
thinking about an Osceola tradition; summer marching band!
This summer the OHS band has a total of 7 parade performances on their schedule:
•
•
•
•
•

Chieftain News
Osceola band students take a lot of
pride in their summer band experience
each year. Not only does the band
travel to fun and interesting locations,
but they work hard to make these
performances a success. This summer
the OHS band will be rehearsing on
Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:00pm
to 4:00pm through most of June and
July to make these performances a
success.
When asked what it is that makes
the OHS Band a routinely successful
program each summer, Band
director Art Aytay responds, “It’s
always the kids. We’re fortunate
to have a GREAT group of students
each summer. They like to have fun, but know when it’s time to get to work and make it all happen. We’re really quite
fortunate! We’ve recently been working on choosing the theme and music for this summer’s upcoming performances, so
the excitement is building. It’s really a lot of fun to be a part of the entire process.”
Part of each summer band season at OHS is the inclusion of a summer-band trip. This year the Marching Chiefs will be
headed to the greater Chicago area where they will march in the towns of Hinsdale and Downer’s Grove over the July 4th
holiday. While on the trip, the band will see a local Chicago minor league baseball game, and also perform at “6 Flags”
amusement park.
If you have any questions or would like more information about the OHS Summer Band program, please contact the band’s
director: Art Aytay - (715) 294-2127 (x4121) or email – [email protected]
RETIREMENTS IN THE DISTRICT
Janet Anderson
After beginning her career as a Music Therapist for 2 1/2 years in the Red Wing School District, Mrs.
Janet Anderson joined the Osceola School District as an elementary educator 25 years ago. Janet
received her Bachelors in Science from UW-Eau Claire in Music Therapy. Her teaching certificate was
obtained from UW-River Falls and her Master’s degree in Professional Learning Community was from
UW-La Crosse. Janet is married to her husband of almost 30 year, Keith, and has three grown children;
Sam who works as a technical writer for Epic in Madison, Kari who graduated with a Sociology
Degree and will be working at Camp WAPO this summer, and Kyle who is a junior at Stout in Materials
and Nano Science.
“My entire teaching career at Osceola has been in fourth grade. However I have worked at three different buildings with
five different principals. OES was a Pre-K through grade 4 building in 1992. Fourth grade was relocated to the old high
school building after the new OHS building was opened, and we finally landed at the current OIS building when it opened.
My principals have been Floyd Woolson, Fred Johnson, Peggy Weber, Rick Ashley and Jake Dodge. My favorite memories
include our Wisconsin Lumber Unit, complete with a silent breakfast, making paper behind the gym, and students dressed
as lumberjacks trying out the tools of a 1800’s lumberjack. I will also miss our visits to a dairy farm, the Interstate Park Pothole
Trail, and the fur trading post at Forts Folle Avoine. Although, I will not miss the bus rides!”
Janet will miss the students most. “I will miss the students’ excitement about learning new things and grasping new
concepts. I will miss the inquiry research projects, where students dig in and prepare a power point about their topic. When
students get excited about the learning, ideas flow, conversation and engagement increase, and the eyes and smiles of
students light up the room! I will also miss all of the excellent staff and educators I have worked with, and especially my
fourth grade colleagues. The greatest thing I’ve learned is that the world is always a better place when we care about
Page 9
School District of Osceola
and give ourselves to others. Our school rules will be with me for a long time, for they are rules for life: be responsible, be
respectful, and be kind. I would like to add two more; be a friend and have fun!”
“I am interested in volunteering with kinship and jail ministry, and being more available at my church. I may try out for a
role in the Clear Lake Theater musical productions. Other hobbies that I’d like to do more of include quilting, kayaking, and
reading. Keith and I would like to travel a bit more, and I’d like to be involved more in raising our beef cows and calves.
When I get bored, I’ll find a part time job that interests me!”
Laura Ebensperger
Mrs. Laura Ebensperger arrived in Osceola as the 5-8 band, choir, and general music teacher 29
years ago. She came to Osceola as Miss Dittrich and had 6 years of previous teaching experience;
five in Plum City and one in Prescott. Laura grew up in Medford, WI and attended the University of
Wisconsin Eau Claire. After marrying her husband, Gary, the spring of her first year in Osceola, the
family expanded to include their four children; Elizabeth, 26, Katherine, 24, Anna, 22 and Daniel,
17. Laura states, “I became a better teacher as my own children were growing up and became the
same ages as my students.” The children attend(ed) Unity school. “We live in Balsam Lake and it just
worked better to be” mom” up there and “ teacher” here.
“As far as favorite memories, I can’t begin to recount them. The people I have met during these past 29 years have all
touched my life. It is funny though because those first few years probably left some of the the most vivid memories! And
what I have learned about teaching is what every good educator knows...you don’t teach subject matter, you teach kids.
Music has allowed me to do that in some amazing ways and with some amazing students over the years.
Although I am not quite ready to give up teaching band in Osceola, job descriptions change and sometimes finances
dictate what has to happen. I look forward to the new adventures life has to offer. I plan to enjoy the outdoors and not do
“too much of anything” until I decide what I want to be “when I grow up!”
Renee Gothmann
Ms. Renee Gothmann has been in the education field for 36 years; 32 years here at the School
District of Osceola. She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from UW
Stout and Master’s degree in Elementary Education from UW River Falls. “I started as a kindergarten
teacher at Osceola in their half-day kindergarten program in 1985. From there I helped to pilot our
full-day kindergarten program in 1990 and have been teaching full-day kindergarten ever since.”
“What will I miss about teaching? Probably everything! Beginning each year with a dream and a
vision of our classroom coming together and creating a positive learning experience for everyone,
and then the moment in the spring when I look around and see we are there. Those ‘aha’ moments.
Reading aloud great stories everyday. The laughter and the hugs. I am proud of the work we do here. I am proud of the
children for the effort they demonstrate daily and the families who support this growth. I am very thankful for the many
professional and personal relationships I have formed here over the years.”
“I have also been blessed with the opportunity to teach hundreds of students over these years and have had the privilege
at times having each child of a single family pass through my classroom. What a connection that has given me to this
community! Recently I have had the wonderful experience of teaching the young children of some of these former
students. An amazing blessing!”
As far as her plans for retirement? “I do not have this ‘next chapter’ planned out yet. I believe that being an educator is not
so much ‘what I do’, but more so, ‘who I am’. So while I am uncertain what lies down the road for me next, I am certain
that in some form I will always be a teacher.”
Page 10
Chieftain News
Jo Jasperson
After teaching 19 years at the Osceola School District, Mrs. Jo Jasperson is planning the next chapter
of her life. Jo received her Bachelor degree at UW-River Falls and her Master’s degree through St.
Mary’s before joining the Chieftain team. “I have taught 3rd grade, 7th grade advanced math, 7th
and 8th grade computer skills, and 5th grade.” Jo is married to her husband Ron and have three
“terrific” children; Erin, Todd and Kristen. “We are all graduates from Osceola.”
When reflecting on what she will miss most about teaching, Jo admits the saying is true, “Everyone
says the kids but it’s true. It’s very rewarding when you teach them something and they have that
‘aha’ moment, or you have that opportunity to witness when they actually understand some new
skill. Of course, I’ll miss all the great people I’ve worked with for so many years, too!”
The greatest thing Jo has learned during her teachers career is, “That you never can be completely prepared for how a
lesson might go. You need to be flexible and let the learning and discussions do the leading. I’ve learned a lot by just
listening to my students and being there when they needed to talk to someone. I have a good relationship with a lot of my
former students and enjoy seeing/talking with them still.”
“As far as retirement plans, Ron and I will continue to cover sports for The Sun but other than that I’m looking forward to
having time to read a book, do some gardening, spend time with our kids and extended family, vacationing, laughing, and
just doing nothing.”
Rosemarie Spanel
Ms. Rosemarie Spanel started teaching for the Osceola School District in 1990 after she attended
the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire where she received a Master of Science degree in Special
Education Birth to Six and a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education K-8. “I was hired
in Osceola by Floyd Woolson and Larry Blahauvietz as the Early Childhood: Exceptional Education
Needs teacher. For the next 27 years, I held this position at the Osceola Elementary School serving
children ages 3 to 6 years old.”
She has a son, Nick and daughter-in-law, Rochelle who live in St. Paul, MN. “After twelve long years,
Nick will be finally completing his oral surgery residency program this coming June. In late July, they
look forward to becoming parents and I can’t wait to become a grandmother!”
“Throughout my 27 years as an Early Childhood teacher, I found my role continually changing and evolving as special
education policies were updated to reflect best teaching practices. I assisted with the startup and implementation of the
Osceola Charter PreK Program and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports at OES. I also taught PreK and Summer
School. I’ve enjoyed working countless evenings at the OHS computer lab and selling tickets at sporting events and will
especially miss the children along with the joy and excitement they bring to school each day. I have learned that the true
joy of teaching comes from listening, watching and witnessing all those magical ‘aha’ moments when a child finally places
that the last piece into the puzzle and realizes what just happened!”
“Some of my most favorite memories are of my early years at OES such as being paged on the intercom system to come to
the office for a phone call, using carbon paper and turning in handwritten lesson plans, using triplicate forms and colored
‘white’ out when writing evaluation reports and IEPs, watching Prince Rupert and Lollipop Dragon filmstrips in the library,
shutting myself in a closet only to discover the doorknob was broken, driving the school district station wagon to home visits
and CESA meetings, along with ripping the backside of my pants and hearing a little voice say, “Miss Spanel, I didn’t know
you wore underwear!” Thank goodness for duct tape!”
Rosemarie has no specific plan during retirement. “At this moment in time, my plans are to keep an open mind about what
lies ahead. I plan to enjoy my new grandchild and allow myself time to discover and define the new ME! “

SUMMER SCHOOL PROGRAM 2017
June 2018
Summer School 19 Days
Inclement weather days will be made up at the discretion of the School Board.
Student Contact Days 175, Instructional ct 172 days
Osceola’s traditional summer school program has
approximately 900 students enrolled this year and will run
from Monday, June 5th, through Friday, June 30th.
Students entering kindergarten through completing 1st
grade will attend programming at Osceola Elementary
School; students completing 2nd through 4th grade will
attend at Osceola Intermediate School; and students
completing 5th through 8th grade will attend Osceola
Middle School. The hours for summer school are: OES--8:10
a.m. through 11:50 a.m.; OIS--8:10 a.m. through 11:45 a.m.;
and OMS--8:10 a.m. through 11:58 a.m.
Students entering kindergarten through those completing
first grade will work with a different unit and teacher each
week, with math and reading infused into a variety of topics
and swimming lessons available for 1st graders. Many regular
teaching staff, some excellent community resource people,
and regular substitute teachers will provide instruction in
a relaxed, enrichment-focused environment. Students in
2nd through 8th grade will participate in a wide variety of
enrichment classes as well. A sampling of classes includes
Stained Glass, Rockets, Food Glorious Food, Competitive
Sports, Woodworking, and Swimming Lessons. A summer
school expo featuring completed student projects will be
held on Friday, June 30th, from 10:00-11:30 a.m. in the OMS
Commons area for grades 5-8.
Summer band lessons are provided for all band students
entering grades 5-8. Lessons are scheduled during
summer school hours once a week, or by request Tuesday,
Wednesday, or Thursday afternoons. Band members in
grades 6 and 7 will have marching band lessons after
summer school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:15-1:30.
Band members in 8th grade will practice marching band
with the high school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:004:00. Students should bring a lunch on those days.
Our school breakfast program will extend into summer
school and will be available for all students who attend
summer school for $1.10. The cost of meals will be deducted
from your family’s food service account. Pre-K students
will receive a snack calendar and take turns bringing in a
snack to share with their classmates. Milk will be available
at no charge to all Pre-K students through the Special Milk
Program--similar to Pre-K snack time during the regular
school year. Kindergarten through 1st grade students will
be offered breakfast mid-morning. Students in 2nd through
8th grade will be offered a “Grab-and-Go” breakfast at the
start of the day. If you qualified for free/reduced meal plans
during the school year, there will be no charge for summer
school breakfast. Breakfast will also be available for Kids Klub
participants at OIS who arrive before summer school. Please
see Kids Klub materials for more information.
Page 15
School District of Osceola
The district provides bus service for summer school, however bus numbers and routes may be different from those of the
regular school year. Information regarding schedules and bus routes are included in this newsletter. Additional information
will be included for those students who have swimming lessons as part of their morning. Kids Klub will also be available
during summer school for all OES and OIS students. ALL GRADES will attend Kids Klub at OIS during summer school.
Any questions regarding summer school may be directed to Peggy Weber at 715-294-3457 (Pre-K through 1st Grade), Jake
Dodge at 715-294-2800 (2nd through 4th Grade), or Rebecca Styles at 715-294-4180 (5th through 8th Grade.)
KIDS’ KLUB SUMMER PROGRAM
The Kids’ Klub program will be open for children attending summer school classes. Eligible students are those who will be
entering kindergarten through 8th grade this fall. The Kids’ Klub program will be located at the intermediate school the month
of June for all ages. The children will be bussed to and from OES and OMS.
Kids’ Klub - June (coordinated with Summer school)
Kids’ Klub JUNE hours will run from 6:00 - 8:15 a.m. and then from 11:45 - 6:00 p.m. It is located at OIS for ALL ages. The program
fees are $2.75 per hour/per child. There is a $25 registration fee per family if not already enrolled. A $10.00 late pickup fee
will be charged per 15-minutes after 6:00 p.m. For those Kids’ Klub members who arrive before summer school, breakfast is
available for $1.10 and will be charged to your family’s regular food service account. On-line payments are also available
through e~Funds for Schools using your credit card or e-check. Re-occurring payments can be made to meet your budgeting
needs as well as a onetime payment. Lunch is not offered through the school district so a bag lunch is required from home.

Community Education, then Kids’ Klub.
FOOD SERVICE ACCOUNTS/FAMILY ACCESS
As the school year comes to a close, families are reminded that any funds remaining in food service accounts will rollover to
the 2017-18 school year. Also, accounts must maintain a positive balance. Lunch accounts are NOT charge accounts, but
rather funds drawn down from deposits made. For families participating in Osceola’s Summer School program, breakfast
services will be charged to existing family food service accounts. Please keep this in mind when making payments. Online
payments are accepted through e~Funds for families wanting to use a credit card or e-check. Cash or check payments
can be dropped off at the District Office, school offices, or mailed to Osceola School District, Attn: Lunch Accounts, PO Box
128, Osceola, WI 54020. Payments are accepted year round- a great way to layaway for Fall by paying throughout the
summer! Reminder: if you have had a change in finances, you can still apply for free/reduced meal plans. Applications are
available at school offices, or online at Osceola school’s website under Food Service, then Forms.
Family Access is a great tool in keeping track of your families food service account activity (purchases & payments), as
well as your child’s attendance, grades, contact information and much more. Note the Skylert tab allows you manage
low balance notices, e-mail, cell phone or other payers. See the school’s website at www.osceola.k12.wi.us for more
information.

All food service accounts with a negative balance must be paid in full by the end of the school year. All negative balances
as of July 7, 2017, will be turned over to a collection agency. For account information feel free to contact the district office
at 715-294-4140 between 7:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. or look on-line at www.osceola.k12.wi.us under Family Access.
SUMMER SCHOOL BUS TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION AND ROUTE SCHEDULE
Transportation information on the next two pages are listed by bus routes rather than by last name. To find the bus you ride,
look for the stop that is most convenient for your family. It may be your home address or a corner near your home if you live
in town. If you have previously indicated a location other than your home address as your alternate location or day care,
use that as the location for bus stop information. The bus number is at the top of each route and the pick-up time is next
to the stop. Please remember to have your children at the stop 5 minutes before the scheduled bus time. If you registered
late for summer school and you do not see a stop that matches your needs on the list or if your child will be transported to
and/or from a different location than what is listed, contact the transportation department at 715-294-3456.
