MINDT WI STERUSA NDT WIST ERUSA MINDT WI STERUSA THE DEFINITIVE BOARD GAME FOR SKATEBOARDING PLAY GUIDE AND INSTRUCTIONS MINDT WI STERUSA skateboardmadness Skateboard Madness is a fun family board game for two to six players. The object of the game is to win the X Games Championship in skateboarding, a feat that you’ll accomplish by learning skateboard tricks (picking up Trick Cards), getting yourself sponsored so that you can accomplish bigger and better Skate Sessions (by picking up Sponsor Cards), meeting Pro’s & Legends, who’ll teach you cool skateboard tricks (by picking up Pro’s & Legends Cards). Skateboard Madness uses a brand new concept for playing a board game and you will encounter all kinds of unique play fun and general madness along the way, including a 400 question trivia section that involves all kinds of fun and interesting skateboard trivia, broken up in four categories; easy, medium, hard and really hard. There’s also 50 Random Cards that will either help you or perhaps set you back as you pick them up throughout the game. Note; you don’t have to know much about skateboarding to enjoy this game. 2 PLAYGUIDE Setup.............................................04 Playing The Game........................06 Taking A Turn................................07 Movement On The Board.............08 Meet The Designers.. Skateboard Madness was conceived by two professional skateboarders that both came to California from Sweden; Tony Mag and Mathias Ringstrom. Tony Mag is a legendary skater from the 80’s that started H-Street and later, Osiris Shoes. Tony’s travelled the world with his skateboard, as has Mathias, who was a top professional rider for 15 years, up until 2008. Mathias competed in the first ever X Games and many thereafter and holds a reputation for being one of the most innovative and technical riders of all time. The two high flying Swedes started the game company Mindtwister USA in 2006, with a Swedish game called Pentago, which has sold more than a million copies all around the world. Mindtwister introduced Pentago to the US and Canadian market in 2006 and the game has been a huge hit, laying the foundation for Mindtwister USA, the publisher of Skateboard Madness. While T-Mag immediately thought it would be a good idea to design a skateboard themed board game, it would take until 2010 before design got fully under way. By this time, Mindtwister USA had grown enough to handle the huge undertaking. Tony Mag got together with Mindtwister game designer Michael Richie and asked him to come up with a unique play movement, as opposed to just rolling two dice and moving along a pre-set path on a game board. Professional skateboarder Ron Allen, another legendary skateboarder was brought in to both star in the game and help design the authenticity and the extensive trivia section of the game. In the beginning of 2011, the game was finished and now included top professional rider and X Games Champion Andy Macdonald and world renowned street skater and X Games competitor Corey Duffel. skateboardmadness WELCOME to SKATEBOARD MADNESS, THE DEFINITIVE BOARD GAME for SKATEBOARDING. PLAYGUIDE 3 s s e n d ma skateboardmadness Skateboard Madness uses several unique ways of playing a board game and it may take a couple of games to get the hang of it, so don’t worry about having to completely understand how the game is played right away. Get the basics down and start playing. There are reminder cards of the most critical play elements that you can keep next to you, while you’re first learning how to play. So.. start with a good size table. Shuffle the Trivia, Random and Trick Card decks and place them in the Card Holder Box after dealing six trick cards to each player. All cards are placed in the box face down. Deal every player one Bandage Token then place the Style Points, the Bandage and Slam Tokens in the Token Holder Box, face up. Everyone places the Bandage Token in front of them on the table, face up. Put the four red Sponsor Dice somewhere next to the board. They will not be used until players pick up Sponsor Cards on the board. 4 PLAYGUIDE Barkley is from New York City but now lives in Malibu Beach, where he goes to high school with Buster and Lola. When he’s not skating, Barkley does a little artwork and plays the guitar in a rock band with Slash called “Madness Rocks”. He is the natural born leader of the Madness crew and mostly skates street but will get in a pool or vert ramp with Buster sometimes. Barkley also works with Roxie on her style. Setting up the game.. There are four sets of Sponsor Cards with six cards in each set and they are separated by companies and colors. Put them face up on the respective Sponsor squares on the board. Do the same for the Pro’s & Legends Cards. If this is the first time playing Skateboard Madness, then take each character and press them into the plastic base and then everyone picks a character to play. BARKLEY Keep the Trick Cards secret from the other players; you wouldn’t want them to know what kind of Skate Session you might throw down on your turn. You’re now ready to go for the X Games Championship in skateboarding. Buster is from Ohio and moved to California when he was little. He now lives in Pacific Palisades, not too far from Barkley and skates the Santa Monica park, where they have a big pool and also skates in Venice Beach. Buster is working on becoming a pro rider someday, while studying hard in school at Malibu High. When he’s not skating, Buster likes to ride bikes and play tennis but dreams about skating the Megaramp someday. BUSTER Lola grew up in Venice Beach and also goes to Malibu High. She started skating when she was old enough to walk and just enjoys cruising on her longboard and riding her old school boards. Lola is pretty much a big sister to Roxie and she also helps her with style. When Lola is not skating, she likes to listen to 80’s music and volunteer for Grind For Life events. Occasionally, she’ll go surfing in Santa Monica, especially if Rip goes. LOLA Roxie is the youngest member of the Madness Crew and also the most talented. She skates street, parks, bowls, vert and when she gets older, she wants to try the Megaramp. She gets lots of help from the rest of the crew who just adores her. She lives in Venice Beach and loves to cruise over to Lola’s house when she’s not skating to study and just do girly stuff. Rip is the hardcore longboard cruiser and loves to shoot photos and video of the crew. Rip grew up in San Francisco and moved down south a few years ago and goes to Santa Monica High school. Rip plans on skating forever and taking film and video classes in college, to make skate video’s and maybe one day make something more serious. He also shoots Slash and Barkley’s band, whenever they play. RIP C ROXIE Roxie came up with the name Madness Crew, since she thought that they have such a tight crew that are all a little bit mad, in a good way. Barkley drew the logo. skateboardmadness skateboard The Madness Crew is a group of friends that love skateboarding. While they do different things and have different tastes and interest, they all share a life long passion for skateboarding. Barkley is the leader of the crew, Buster is the competitor, Lola really likes old school skateboarding, Rip cruises a longboard and handles the camera work, Roxie is super talented and Slash just likes it all. SLASH Slash is the comedian of the crew, he’s always pulling little pranks on his friends, all in good fun, of course. Slash cruises longboards and the old school boards with Lola and is into all the 70’s and 80’s tricks, both on the street and in parks. Slash lives in Topanga, which is not too far from the rest of the crew. Besides skateboarding, Slash is studying to be an architect and he plays drums in the band with Barkley. PLAYGUIDE 5 skateboard tebo PLAYGUIDE The chance dice IE LL O AR DOM D In addition, you also do what the Chance Dice says, see next page. po ol t this is your 6 point skate session. AN Now it’s time to roll; grab the two black dice and the Chance Dice and go for it. If you roll a 6 or higher, you “made your session” and you move your character on the board, in the order of the cards. You go 2 spaces and do whatever happens on that square, then move 1 rolling and moving IMPORTANT!! If you rolled less than what your Skate Session equals, you don’t make that Skate Session but you still move the total amount of squares in your session, you just don’t pick up or do anything along the way, including Slamming, even if the Slam is the final square you land on. IMPORTANT!! Remember that you move accrding to the Trick Cards, not what the dice show. skateboard madness this is your Dice Roll, which equals 7. R As an example, let’s say that you lay down three cards; a 2, a 3 and a 1, in that order. That equals 6 all together. 3 1 IE If you land on an empty square, nothing happens there. Once you’ve played your Trick Cards on your turn, just throw them in a discard pile. If the Trick Card pile runs out of cards, just recycle the discard pile and make a new Trick Card pile in the card holder box. skateboard madness LL Your turn is a “Skate Session” that consists of you drawing a Trick Card from the pile (card holder box) and then laying down a Skate Session of Trick Cards on the table, for everyone else to see and in the order that you’d like to move on the board and then rolling the dice to see if you “made the session”. 2 3 O 3 and do what happens there and so on, until your turn is done. skateboard madness str ee Playing The Game.. ve rt 2 Everyone sets their play character in the middle, then decide who starts. Then lay down a skate session on the table. In this example, you choose to put down a 2, a 3 and a 1, in that order. The challenge now is to roll the total or above of the cards, which is 6, with the dice that you have. To start off, you’ll roll the two black Skate Session Dice, with the Chance Dice.. ska ska ska skateboardmadness s s e n d ma Example; taking a turn is always rolled with the regular dice. It has three possible outcomes. Slam | This means that you either play the bandage token to “heal” your injury or you pick up a Slam Token, which is placed in front of you. For every Slam you have, you’ll roll with one less dice next time you roll the dice, so try to keep some Bandage Tokens around for when you Slam. Ollie| This means that you are able to move across any number of Ollie Gaps on your turn, as well as being able to “Ollie over” other players. See next page for an Ollie example. Random | This means to draw a Random Card and just follow instructions. Read it out loud so that your fellow players know what you’re doing and why. You laid down your Skate Session and in this example, you rolled a 3 and a 4 on the dice. The goal is to equal or beat 6, the total of your Skate Session. The Dice Roll of 7 does that which means that you made your Skate Session. Now you move your character on the board, in order of the cards. See next page for some examples and tips on moving. You also do what the Chance Dice tells you to do. In this case, you rolled an Ollie, which means that you can cross any Ollie Gaps on the board, as you make your moves. If you roll a Random Card or Slam on the Chance Dice, then do this action first, before you move, as it may change what happens next. PLAYGUIDE 7 the ollie movement on the board You can only move to squares that are directly connected with another square, like these two squares. These two squares are not directly connected and you’d have to step on the blue square first, to reach the other red square. You can go anywhere on the board, in any direction, as long as you have the Trick Cards in your Skate Session and an Ollie on the Chance Dice, to cross the Ollie Gaps or pass another player on the board. X skateboardmadness A basic move 8 2 Let’s say that you are here and that you have a 2, a 3 and another 2 in your Skate Session and you don’t roll an Ollie on the Chance Dice. You also choose to move towards the tail of the old school board. Reminder: if you roll the dice and do not equal or beat your skate session cards that you laid down, you still move the numbers of squares that the cards indicate, you just don’t pick up or do anything along the way. note THAT all locations on the game board are called “squares”, regardless of their shape. ALSO Note that the game board is designed using the shape of an old school skateboard, laid over the shape of a new school skateboard. The old school boards were used in the 80’s and earlier and are becoming popular again. PLAYGUIDE X 1 When you land on any Woodward camp square, you take one dice and make a separate roll. Whatever you roll, pick up that many Trick Cards from the pile. Then continue with your turn if you have more cards in your Skate Session. then the 1 takes you here and you pick up a sponsor card to keep. the 2 in your skate session takes you here and you’re asked a trivia question. finally, the last 2 in your skate session takes you here and you draw a pro’s & Legend card to keep. 2 woodward skate camp the 2 in your skate session takes you here and you pick up a pro & Legends card to keep. 2 skateboardmadness If you roll an Ollie on your turn, you can “jump” over any of the Ollie Gaps during your Skate Session or other players. You just move as if the squares were connected or as if the other players were not “in your way”. You still need to have the cards in your Skate Session to make the move that you want to do. As an example, if you are here and have 2 and 1 in your Skate Session, which is easy to roll with two dice and you roll the Ollie on the chance dice, then you can “jump” the gaps on the board, along the dotted red lines and according to the cards in your Skate Session. Using the Ollie Gaps can really get you around the board quickly, which will help you win. then, the 3 takes you here and you draw a random card. 3 the skateboard mag When you land on any Skate Mag square, you take one dice and make a separate roll. If you roll a six, that means that you got a photo in the mag and thus earned a new Sponsor. Advance to any Sponsor square and pick up that Sponsor Card. Then continue with your turn if you have more cards in your Skate Session. PLAYGUIDE 9 Here you have a rather big Skate Session laid down; it totals 21. You have two sponsors, so you roll with 2 red Sponsor Dice, in addition to the regular black Skate Session Dice. Even with four dice, rolling 21 is a pretty hard and you only roll 19. You have already earned three Style Points. To make this Skate Session, you’ll “spend” two Style Points, so that the Dice Roll plus the Style Points total 21. You can choose not to play your Style Points, as you may want to save them for another turn, like the winning Skate Session. Spent Style Points are returned to the box when the turn is over. skateboardmadness PLAYGUIDE ska ska ska te ska te te ska m ska s tebo sk te teesbo ska madboasrkdateb madn m boar madboarkdatebo adn e Whatever number comes up, pick up that many Trick Cards from the pile to your hand. You can go to any of the four Woodward Skate Camps as often as you like. The Skateboard Mag Square: Another special place to go is to The Skateboard Mag. When you land here, take one dice and roll it. If you roll a six, then you can advance to any Sponsor Square that you haven’t been to already and get that Sponsor Card. You can go visit The Skateboard Mag as often as you like but once you have all four sponsors, there’s no need. The Slam Square: This isn’t a place that you really want to go. Sometimes you might be forced to step onto a Slam square or even choose to do it, because of where you want to go. Anytime you Slam, either by landing on the Slam square, rolling it on the Chance Dice or by picking up a Random Card that made you slam, the same thing happens: play a Bandage Token if you have it or pick up a Slam Token which will cause you to roll with one less dice, starting on your next turn, until you pick up and play a Bandage Token. It’s a good idea to collect Bandage Tokens ahead of time, so that you can play one right when you Slam. To get one, plan your Skate Session so that you land on the Heal Thy Self square on the board. When you do, just pick up a Bandage Token and keep it in front of you. To play it, you just put it back in the Bandage Token pile to regain the dice that you lost. Return any Slam Tokens that you had too. Also note that throughout the game you can take several Slams and each will require a Bandage Token to “heal” but on one single turn, you take only one Slam Token regardless of the number of Slams that may happen to you on that one turn. play example; When you answer Trivia Questions, you earn one Style Point for each question answered correctly. You can sometimes be given Style Points by the Random Cards too. Style Points are useful because they allow you to roll a lesser number than the Trick Cards in your Skate Session and still make your Session. Another way to earn Style Points is to play three Trick Cards of a kind in your Skate Session. The Trick Cards are separated by five different terrains; Street, Vert, Pool, Park and Megaramp. Any time that you play one or more sets of three cards with the same terrain, you get a Style Point for each set, if you made your Skate ska ska te te masd kat Session. s mad msa kn ateeb sk dneebo sk ma boarsdkate ma boarkdateb ne sk s a RON ALLEN DOES A BASIC OLLIE OVER A SIGN AT A DEMO IN SAN FRANCISCO, 2007. 10 Most of the squares have special meanings, so just do what the squares that you land on say. Pro & Legends Card Square: The Pro’s & Legends Card are special, you can use them as part of your Skate Session that you roll for; they are all worth 6 points. At the end of your turn, you keep these cards for the rest of the game, they are not discarded like the Trick Cards. You can only collect one Pro’s & Legends Card from each end of the board, for a total of four. Keep the Pro’s & Legends cards on the table face up, for all to see. Just slide them over to be part of your Skate Session, as you decide to use them. PLAYGUIDE 11 Winning win. Having as many Style Points as possible will really help you, because it lowers the amount that you have to make on the Dice Roll, as described in this example. Now go crazy on the board, collect Pro’s & Legends Cards, get Sponsored, deal with Slamming, Random Stuff, Trivia and make it to the X Games and go skafor the Championship. ska ska tebo sk tebo sk ska teb ska ma maska strategy The idea is that you can strategically plan out your move ahead of time, depending on where you want to go and how big of a Skate Session that you think that you can roll for, with the dice that you have. Gain Sponsors and Pro’s & Legends Cards as quickly as possible, so that you can be as mobile as possible on the game board. You’ll really need three of the four Sponsors so that you’re rolling at least five dice to win. Even with five dice, you’ll do much better if you have some Style Points and Bandage Tokens too. The chances of rolling a 25, even with a few Style Points and Bandage Tokens, is much easier with six dice, so having all four sponsors is a good idea but sometimes you might have to go for it with five dice or even four dice, if you think that someone else is about to win. You have to carefully balance risk and reward and play as effectively as possible, to be competitive for the X Games Championship. skateboardmadness ska To win, you have to go to the X Games in the middle where you started and you have to be able to lay down a 25 point Skate Session on your turn and then successfully be able to roll a 25 or higher, with the dice that you have (also see winning notes on page 15). There is also a special rule while rolling for the winning session; you can trade in your Bandage Tokens for Style Pointsmwhen you’re ska going for the big ska teb sk ska teb sk ma m ask ateeb sk o the winner! that is unless someone else can successfully challenge your win. see page 14 for notes on how this works. Also, it does not matter in which order you lay down the winning skate session; it’s all about going for it!! PLAYGUIDE 13 14 You don’t need to read this stuff right away to start playing but as questions come up in a specific situation, this section is meant to address all concerns regarding game play. Winning: Once you’ve put down a winning Skate Session, all other players has one turn to challenge your win by laying down a bigger Skate Session and rolling for it. You may even choose to put up a bigger Skate Session than the required 25 points, if you think that’ll keep another player from successfully challenging your win. Say you go 26 for points; this would force a challenger to put up a 27 point Skate Session to win. Challengers can try to make a winning Skate Session from the outside too. Say that you’ve already made a 25 point Skate Session and another player is 4 spaces away from the middle; they would have to lay down a 26 point Skate Session plus 4 for a total of 30 and then make that Skate Session. This gets real tough, real quick, even with six dice. If you’re not in the middle and you think that you can put down a Skate Session to get to the middle and put up the 25 point session and roll for the whole thing, you can certainly go for it. Say you’re two spaces away from the X Games square; You’d need 2 points to get in and then 25 to win for a total of 27, then you’d have to roll that to be in a winning position. This may be a good idea if you have lots of Style Points, all four Sponsors Cards thus rolling with six dice and you think that someone else could win if you don’t go for it. In the end, whoever successfully made the biggest Skate Session from the outside or the middle is the X Games Champion of Skateboard Madness. PLAYGUIDE If you’re rolling for a winning Skate Session from the middle and don’t make it, you don’t go anywhere, you just stay there until your next turn. If you tried it from the outside and didn’t make the session, you do move into the X Games square in the middle. While going for the win, if the Chance Dice gives you a Random Card that causes you to lose some of your Style Points needed to win, you don’t make that winning Skate Session. On the other hand, if your Dice Roll is short but you got a Random Card that get’s you enough Style Points to make that Skate Session, then you have a winning Skate Session, even if the Random Card has you moving to another location. This is true for regular turns too; the Random Card can make or break your Skate Session. Trivia: You can decide that you are only going to play one of the four levels of questions. You can also agree that different players get asked different levels of questions, as a way to equalize the play a bit. There’s any combination on what questions to use, including leaving it totally open, meaning that any question can be asked and it’s up to the other player that picks up the Trivia Card to decide. If you have a lot of players, you may also agree on who picks up Trivia Cards. As an example, you can decide that whoever’s turn it is next picks up the Trivia Card for the player that landed on the Trivia Square. Also, some questions have more than one correct answer marked in black: any of the correct answers given will earn the Style Point. Slamming: If you Slam twice before getting any Sponsor Cards and you don’t have any Bandage Tokens, you’re out of dice and can’t roll for a Skate Session. In this case, when it’s your turn, another player draws a Trivia Card and if you get the question right, you get two Bandage Tokens instead of a Style Point so that you can heal your Slams and roll with two dice on your next turn. Also, while it’s entirely possible to Slam more than once on the same turn, you only pick up one Slam Token or play one Bandage Token for any number of Slams that happens on one turn. Trick Cards: For each Trick Card, you have to move in one direction as many spaces as the number on the card says and you cannot go back to a square you were just on. Once you made your move on any one card in your Skate Session, you can then switch direction and go back on any additional cards in your Skate Session. Also, be careful to not run out of Trick Cards. If you do, you’re stuck with only playing the one Trick Card that you draw on your turn and any Pro’s & Legends Cards that you may have. If that happens, try to get yourself to Woodward Skate Camp and roll for Trick Cards or try for the Random Stuff squares, hoping that you can pick up some Trick Cards there. You can also go to the Trick Card squares. The Chance Dice: Always do what the Chance Dice tells you to do first. If you get the Random Card on the roll, then pull that card and follow instructions first, before moving your piece. If you Slam on the roll, either take the Slam Token or if you have a Bandage Token, play that right away by putting it back into the box, so it’s not forgotten after you make your move. Game Board Movements: Only one player can occupy the small round and square game board spaces at a time. The large Sponsor, Pro’s & Legends and the X Games square in the middle can be used and occupied by any number of players at the same time. Two players can occupy the Woodward Skate Camp squares at the same time, so if there’s only one player on a camp square, you can go there too. If two players are at a camp location, then the camp is full and you can’t go there and you’ll need an Ollie on the Dice roll to jump those players. If you get an Ollie on your turn, you can jump as many Ollie Gaps or other players as you like but the final square you land on must be available to you. You can also “Slam” your way past other players if you don’t roll an Ollie. This means that you can still plan your Skate Session, even if other players are in your way but it’s a Slam to do that. If you already rolled a Slam on the Chance Dice, then there’s no real penalty in doing so, since you can only get one Slam Token per turn anyway. Generally speaking, if you don’t roll an Ollie on the Chance Dice, you’ll just have to go in a direction where the Ollie isn’t needed. It’s also entirely possible that you can get blocked by other players and/or a gap and without an Ollie in your Dice Roll so you might not be able to finish the Skate Session that you laid down. You could always choose to “slam” by another player or you can choose not to do that. If you chose not to, you just make the moves from your Skate Session that you can. You can never go somewhere that you don’t have a Trick Card for in your Skate Session, including the X Games square when you’re trying to win the game. You always have to lay down Trick Cards in the order that you’re going to make your move.
