Culture Days Are Here!
Welcome to Culture Days, a nation-wide
collaborative movement designed to encourage
awareness, participation, and engagement of
all Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their
communities. This Canadian celebration runs
from September 29 to October 2 and represents
the largest-ever collective public participation
campaign undertaken by the arts and cultural
community in this country. During Culture Days,
you will enjoy free, hands-on, interactive activities
in the “behind the scenes” world of artists,
creators, historians, curators, and designers in
their community.
Get Your Passport First
Arts ce Soir, the MacLaren Art Centre’s Carnegie
Days, and Doors Open in collaboration with
Culture Days have created a combined passport
to culture that you can pick-up at the following
locations:
• MacLaren Art Centre, 37 Mulcaster Street;
• Department of Culture, 24 Maple Avenue,
2nd floor;
• The Barrie Public Library, 60 Worsley Street;
• and at several businesses along Lakeshore
Mews, such as Le Petit Chapeau, Awkward

The Barrie Art Club will welcome visitors and
provide demonstrations in creating wire
sculptures, while engaging the public with
techniques in acrylics and oils.
City of Barrie Dance Demonstrations –
Holly Recreation Centre,
171 Mapleton Avenue - 2:00 to 3:30 p.m.
Join Sandi LaPlante and learn to line dance, jazz
dance or Zumba!
Hip Hop Workshop – Unity Market,
25 Toronto Street – 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
Shane L.S. Dennis will lead a workshop that
will discuss the history of Hip Hop and lyric
writing skills.
King Edward Choir – Barrie Farmers' Market,
70 Collier Street, City Hall Rotunda – 9:30 a.m.
The King Edward Choir, a long established group
with a reputation for fine performances will
perform under the direction of the well renowned
Barb McCann.

Culture Days Workshops
The Barrie Folk Society has organized the
following workshops at the Barrie Public library
on Saturday, October 1st, please pre-register at

Guitar Part I – 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.
This workshop is designed for those who wish
to learn how to play the guitar. Bring your own
instrument and Corey Heuvel will teach you basic
chords and rhythms.
Guitar Part II – 2:15 to 3:15 p.m.
Corey will take you to the next level by teaching
major and minor barre chords that include
various tensions and suspensions.
Songwriting – 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
Use your creativity to design and produce a song
with Paul Court’s organic method.
Moving Art Loft Space – 125 Anne Street
North – Saturday Tours from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. or
Sunday Dance Demos 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Take a tour of the loft space on Saturday or
learn dancers in training with the Simcoe
Contemporary Dancers on Sunday.
Musical Petting Zoo at Flying Monkeys Craft
Brewery – 12:00 to 5:00 p.m.
Bring the kids and try your hand at plucking
a harp, drumming on a djembe, womp
womping on a didgeridoo or buzzing a shofar.
The Zoo is fully interactive, hands-on exhibition
for musicians and novices, both young and old.
Guitar Making– Kozlov Centre,
400 Bayfield Street - 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Watch Ron Belanger while he handcrafts fretted
instruments from custom steel string guitars to
Irish bouzoukis and resonator guitars. Ron will
demonstrate his ability for crafting a perfect
instrument and show several instruments in
various states of development.
African Art for Kids – Kozlov Centre,
400 Bayfield Street, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Shirley Thompson-Kort will assist children with
learning about West African Adrinkra symbols
and their meaning while creating their own
unique piece of jewelry.
Arts ce Soir Exhibition Event
Lakeshore Mews, where Mulcaster Street meets
the Lakeshore, Sunset till Dawn
All new this year! From sunset on October 1st,
until sunrise on October 2nd, artists will transform
Lakeshore Mews into an engaging place of
art, whether it be visual, musical, theatrical or
literature. Barrie residents and tourists are invited
to encounter the downtown in a new way and
rediscover the city through a series of indoor and
outdoor events and site-specific installations. This
evening of culture will bring the art community
together to offer both the uninitiated and
devoted art lovers an accessible and exciting
night of contemporary art as well as showcase
the region's artistic talent and our city’s new
commitment to arts and culture.
Upon your visit you will encounter up to 30 site
specific art installations and be entertained by a
variety of performances, bound to nourish and
inspire the creative soul.
Some events include:
• The Sistine Chapel Challenge @ Jill Price Studios
- Gather a team of people and try to finish a
5000 piece puzzle of the Sistine Chapel in
record time!
• Recycled Light installation by Lisa Brunetta
• Sunrise Inspired Dance performed by
Simcoe County Dancers

MacLaren Art Centre, 37 Mulcaster Street,

Carnegie Days offers visitors of all ages great
events that explore the role language plays in
contemporary art. Exhibitions, public art projects,
performances, author readings, artist talks, film
and video screenings, guided tours and handson workshops take place at the MacLaren and
across the City of Barrie.
