Kirkcaldy Area Reachout Trust Annual Report 2014-2015 Psalm 78:4 ‘we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the LORD, about his power and his mighty wonders.’ The aims of KART The aim of KART is to advance the Christian religion among school children in the Kirkcaldy Area. To do this we will Support teachers in teaching the religious and moral curriculum Establish Scripture Union Groups in Schools Support School Chaplains Support and develop Christian Youth work In August 2012 KART set out a series of aims for each of these goals for the following 3 years. In this report we give an update on progress in each of these areas along with feedback from each of the KART teams. Who are the KART Trustees? Rev Jim Reid BD WF Stuart Lynch WS Rachel Walker David Stewart Chairperson of KART Minister of Kinghorn Parish Church Church of Scotland Crossreach Council Head Teacher of Fair Isle Primary School Scripture Union Representative Scripture Union Scotland KART Trustees Management Committee Finance Team Prayer Team Publicity Team Reachout Team KART Youth Worker Church Youth Leaders SU Group Volunteer Leaders School Chaplains School Staff Chris Beattie is the KART Youth Worker and the only employee of KART; everyone else associated with KART is a volunteer. The Management Committee meets with Chris and the Trustees every couple of months. Separately, the organising teams meet to take forward the business work of KART. In addition to delivering youth work, Chris is our primary liaison with schools, chaplains and churches. KART is part of the Scripture Union Associate Worker scheme and receives valuable advice and support from Scripture Union Regional Worker Bruce Lockhart. Note: this report covers the year April 2014 to March 2015. Trustees’ Report – David Stewart. The work of KART continues in Kirkcaldy with Chris Beattie, our KART worker, at the helm. Chris has been involved with: Assemblies in both primary and secondary schools Transition days (primary to secondary) Football coaching Running Scripture Union (SU) groups both in primary and secondary schools In-service Activity Days Holiday Clubs Most of these activities are not a one man band. Chris works with volunteers from different Churches, backgrounds and ages. He gets alongside young people and encourages them to lead groups, to reach their potential. He encourages the adult volunteers and he brings new ideas for SU groups, Sunday Schools and Youth Groups. He networks with Church ministers, chaplains and children and youth leaders. Through his football coaching and being available to the Schools he has heartened the pupils and teachers. One of the big pluses of KART’s position is that it is an inter-denominational organisation and as such brings together people and churches who might otherwise not meet or work together. By being part of the wider Scripture Union Scotland family, Chris is plugged into the training and networking of SU and is able to bring the ideas and training back to the Kirkcaldy area. KART continues to fulfil its aims and is a bridge between Church and School, and it is our hope and prayer that more people will be motivated and encouraged to be involved with this exciting work of giving children and young people the opportunity to explore the Christian faith and find out about God’s love. The work would not be able to take place without the volunteers who support the work - there are many who help with the different groups and activities, give financial backing and pray for the work. Progress with KART aims – Chris’ report. Support teachers in teaching the religious and moral curriculum Chris ran RME Classes – mainly in Viewforth High School with S1 and S2. Also helped lead an ‘Easter Code’ 2 hour class for Primary 7’s from Strathallan Primary. The team was made up of helpers from Abbotshall Parish Church and KART volunteers. Chris will be leading at least two ‘Journey through the Bible’ sessions at local Primary schools – Kirkcaldy North and Fair Isle in May. Chris has also participated during Pathhead Primary’s book week and will be involved again in Kirkcaldy North’s ‘Friendship Day’. Feedback comments about Easter Code from Strathallan Primary chaplain. Event was well planned and well organised. Four members of my church and a member of the Costa 3:16 group were involved along with Chris and myself. It engaged the pupils and the response from pupils, staff and head teacher was overwhelmingly positive. We have been invited back next year. Chris will also be leading some Transition classes in Fair Isle Primary school along with the School Chaplain. Establish Scripture Union groups in schools The groups at Kinghorn Primary and Viewforth High have been running successfully. The Ignite group at Viewforth have been spending time working their way through the Bible and exploring God’s overall plan. Unfortunately due to numbers and lack of volunteers the X-Site group at Balwearie High has come to an end this term, however we are hoping to start something new in the new school year. Feedback from primary SU group volunteer leader: Chris is a huge practical and spiritual support to running our school SU group. I have learned a lot from observing and working closely with Chris. Support school chaplains In the last year, Chris has enjoyed a very positive relationship with local chaplains. As part of the chaplaincy team at Balwearie High and Viewforth High Schools, Chris has had the opportunity to work closely with local ministers, not only at School ‘Religious Observance’ but in school events such as the ‘Easter Code’ class. Feedback from Valley Primary school assemblies: Tailored presentations to fit in with school developments. Fun and playful attitude keeping children engaged and attentive. Good mixture of fun activities and Scripture: able to bring Bible study to the children without overloading them. We welcome Chris into our school at every opportunity. In May 2015 KART will deliver a lunch and training opportunity for the local chaplains, focusing mainly on ‘Time for Reflection’ templates and discussion of our work as chaplains. Support and develop Christian youth work Costa 3:16 – This group has continued to meet and grow. The young people attending are developing into mature adults. It is a pleasure to be part of their lives. The group also worked together as part of a holiday club based at Bennochy Church and a number of them have volunteered at Football Camp, Activity days, SU events and SU groups. Our vision for Costa 3:16 is to: Encounter God, Engage the community and Encourage each other. Comments from 2014 Football Camp: I enjoyed:Meeting Everyone Making new friends and meeting new staff (PS coming next year maybe) The superman song Food and meeting everyone Football Pool, Table Tennis & Extreme Table Tennis Improving my football skills The excellent food Playing matches and making new friends Meeting two new friends The best food ever wish they could cook like that more often! The amazing food can I take the cooks home with me? Football (I scored a rocket) Being Chris’s best friend The amazing hot chocolate Mountain biking Everything especially the high rope but it should be higher! Everything on camp The amazing food and amazing coaches Football – has expanded again this year. Chris now leads football training at Fair Isle Primary School, Kirkcaldy North Primary School and Pathhead Primary School. Chris will also be helping at Dysart between now and the end of the school year. Chris will be leading Football Camps again this July. There will be two camps (both over 3 days) again this year. Eighteen children from Fair Isle, Kirkcaldy North and Pathhead will be making up the numbers. Football camp at Lendrick Muir Activity days – Several local churches have held an Activity Day in the past session. Already 50 young people have been involved in some great Bible stories and games this school year (St. Bryce Parish and Whytescauseway Baptist). Torbain and Templehall will be having their fifth Activity Day together in June. An 'Activity Day' is a full 4 hour programme for primary school children on a school in-service day. The day is themed and includes activities such as games, crafts, challenges, Bible stories, songs etc. This has proved to be a great success and we have been having fun in a number of the local churches. KART led a Holiday club in Bennochy Church during the October holidays. Fifteen children attended and enjoyed the Showstopper theme, where we looked at the five most popular stories from the Bible. The team was made up of KART volunteers and a number of the older young people that we are working with. Bennochy Church are happy for this club to be repeated in October 2015. KART led some training for Church volunteers in January 2015. The ’60 ideas in 60 minutes’ event took place in St. Bryce Church and we had representatives from 5 local churches. Prayer Team – Maureen Latto. A faithful group of 5 meet at my house every month. We meet at 7.30pm, have a cup of tea and chat over prayer items. Then we delight in praying for the work of KART and find ourselves thanking God for the wonderful work being accomplished in His service. Please feel free to join us when you can. We have attended church prayer groups and look forward to an invite to your prayer meetings so you too can support in prayer the work of KART. We also organise the National Pray for Schools day for our catchment area, and encourage churches to join us for an hour of prayer. Every school in our area is now being prayed for which is another prayer fulfilled. To further develop the work of the prayer team we need a prayer coordinator to bring people together to pray for KART and encourage churches and individuals to pray for schools. If you are interested in this role or being a member of the prayer team please get in touch with any of the committee members. Publicity Team – Alison Doyle. The KART Publicity Team supports Chris and KART in publicising events, providing churches and individuals with updates and in producing literature to promote the work of KART. We send out a quarterly update called KART Corner for churches to include in their church magazines or notice boards. This year we also sent out a Christmas card with a newsletter from Chris to all our KART supporters. We aim to maintain a current database of individuals in churches who will be our KART/SU key contact. Please can you contact the publicity team and provide us with an email address for the key contact in your church who will receive all publicity and information about KART for your church? This will enable us to ensure we send the latest information to the right person who represents your church. If you would be interested in joining the KART Publicity Team or would like to find out more please contact us by email at: enquiries @kart.me.uk KART annual sponsored event – Alison Doyle. In November 2014 KART held its first “Tour-2-France” sponsored event. 27 supporters, divided into 10 teams, kept a daily tally of how far they walked, jogged, hill-walked, dog-walked, cycled, exercise-biked, swam and tread-milled every day for 14 days. Tour 2 France Challenge Our aim was to take a virtual tour from Kirkcaldy to France and then hopefully back again. On Day 1 we were in Gretna Green, Day 3 in London, Day 5 we were in Calais and by Day 8 we had completed 2203km between us and were in Cannes in the south of France. By Day 14 we had completed a grand total of 4138km and were just 322km short of making it back to Kirkcaldy!! After the 14 days were completed we met together, at Whytescauseway Baptist Church, to find out the final distances reached and to celebrate with some French cakes and pastries. The total raised in sponsorship, by those who took part, was a fantastic £1863 and this, as in previous years, was partly matched by Santander by an additional £1400 giving a grand total of £3263! C’est magnifique!! We would like to thank everyone who took part or who sponsored someone to take part. We are absolutely delighted with the amount of money which was raised for the work of KART. We hope to run a similar event in September 2015 so please do get in touch nearer the time if you would like to take part by emailing: [email protected]. Health & Safety report – Andrew Herbert. KART activities are run in accordance with Scripture Union Health & Safety policies and procedures. When working in schools or supporting church-led activities the organisation’s own policies and procedures will also be adhered to. During the year no incidents or near misses occurred. Volunteers are vetted following the Scripture Union child protection policy and procedures. Vetting is updated annually for current volunteers. Finance report – Maureen Latto. KIRKCALDY AREA REACHOUT TRUST Treasurer’s Report Year Ended 31st March 2015 Our Financial year ended with a bank balance of £37052.74. In our budget for this year we expected a small deficit, but KART was successful in a couple of applications for funding and our fundraisers did well this year too. Our total income for this year is £41,255.07 and expenditure £36969.65. Our income over expenditure therefore gives a surplus of £4285.42. Our income is derived as follows:DONATIONS/GRANTS/TRUSTS:Go For It (Church of Scotland- last of 3 years funding) Kirkcaldy Presbytery (via Bennochy Parish Church) Souter Trust – to cover office costs Fife Council local area committees – for football goals for Pathhead and Kirkcaldy North primary schools PLEDGES FROM LOCAL CHURCHES:Kinghorn PC St Bryce Kirk (for this year and 2015/2016) Abbotshall PC DONATIONS FROM LOCAL CHURCHES:Pathhead Parish Church (£1,200 will show in 2015/2016) Newcraigs Kingdom Life Church Bennochy Parish Church Buckhaven and Wemyss Parish Church DONATIONS BY STANDING ORDER:We have 18 people who donate by standing order Our hope is that Christians in our area will support KART as their local mission and that KART would mainly be funded by individuals. FUNDRAISING: Each year our fundraising increases. Thank you for all your hard work, organising, executing, taking part and of course sponsoring our events. Our expenditure for this year is £36969.65. Payments associated with KART’s activities are broken down as follows:Worker’s expenses 820.00 Office Rent 3091.79 Youth Events 2746.38 Other expenses and overheads: 2153.20 (Telephone, equipment, computer supplies, postage, stationery, books consumables, resources, printing, training, insurance, and general charity expenses) SU associate worker fee 2000.00 10811.37 Salary, NI, Pension & Insurance 26158.28 Total Expenditure 36969.65 PROPOSED BUDGET FOR 2014/2015 We expect an income in the region of £37915 and expenditure of £39694. The good news is that our expenditure has been helped along with a saving of £2000 in a reduction of National Insurance contributions. We envisage our reserves to fall by about £1800. Our funding from Church of Scotland (£10,000 each year for the past 6 years) has sadly come to an end. Without their support we would not have been able to recruit a worker. We have been very fortunate as KART has been successful in obtaining a restricted grant of £10,000 for the next 3 years from the Joseph Rank Trust. This secures the work of KART for a further 3 years. Over the next year we will continue to work on our plans to secure additional funding from churches, from individuals by standing order or regular giving, through churches and fundraising, in addition to continuing to pursue grants from relevant trusts as we have done this year and in the past years. Chairman’s report – Andrew Herbert. As acting chair of KART, looking back over the past year I am heartened to see the progress which has been made. Through Chris, KART is now involved in 10 primary schools and 2 high schools. His involvements include a range of different activities all of which are well received. The number of school SU groups continues to be small, and the current close down of the Balwearie group is a disappointment. Seeking more volunteers to take up the running of SU groups is a key for KART in the coming period. At this time last year we were foreseeing a major financial issue for KART with the coming to an end of the substantial grant from the Church of Scotland “Go for it!” fund. Our financial campaign locally to churches and individuals was not as productive as we had hoped but we are extremely grateful for those churches and individuals who did respond, as well as Kirkcaldy Presbytery for their ongoing support. I am pleased however to report that we have been successful in getting the support of another major charitable trust, the Joseph Rank Trust, which has agreed to give KART £10,000 for each of the next 3 years. This grant, along with our ongoing local support and other small, one off grants, has enabled us to see a secure financial future for KART’s work for the next 3 to 4 years at least. Having secured KART’s future finances the trustees and management committee are now turning their attention to reviewing progress with KART’s last 3 year plan and developing the plan for the next 3 years. They are meeting in May to do this work and will be sharing the plan with supporters after it is put together. Finally, may I echo David Stewart’s words and give my thanks to Chris and all the volunteers and supporters who together make KART’s work possible.
