BRUNCH AROUND THE BLOCK
If you want eggs, you got it. Not to mention fried chicken and waffles, Benny’s beyond belief, artisanal roasted and sourced
coffee and possibly a hair of the dog drink, if you need one. Winnipeg has celebrated brunch spots all over the city, and lots of
them, so here are just a couple to start your day right.

Stella’s homemade jam.
Stella’s opened in Osborne Village in 1999
and they’ve since taken the city by storm
with locations now in the West End, St.
Boniface, Tuxedo/River Heights, Downtown,
and even in the airport.
Its success came by way of putting great
ingredients into brunch with classic dishes
like smoked salmon benedict with spinach
lemon sauce, maple caramel French toast
on house made brioche, Norwegian style
waffles, and the Mexican breakfast (aka
huevos rancheros). Everything is always
made from scratch (including the artisanal
breads and the now legendary jam which
you can buy) while the service is always
affable – making lines in the morning often
the norm.
Breakfast at Tallest Poppy.
Flat White.
In the Exchange a proper brunch was
hard to come by for a while as most spots
never opened until 11 a.m. That changed
when the oh so aesthetically pleasing Miss
Browns opened their gourmet sandwich
shop (featuring only ethically raised meats)
that also does a killer breakfast.
They serve outstanding flat whites from
Portland’s Stumptown Coffee Roasters
while their shakshuka (spicy tomato sauce
with two floating poached eggs and toast)
has been met with rave reviews from Food
Network Canada. They also do mushrooms
on toast and an eggs Benny on a bread
roll with all the sides a kid could ask for
including cubed hash browns and bacon.

The West End has become arguably the
best end when it comes to brunching in
Winnipeg. The cool cat choice is The Tallest
Poppy where awesomeness includes the kale
breakfast (smashed baby potatoes, sautéed
kale, mushrooms and onions topped with
poached eggs), fried chicken and waffles
– the waffles of which are made from an
actual Belgian, and challah French toast. They
also serve a mean Caesar made from freshly
blended tomatillos.

Berry yogurt parfait.
In St. Boniface there is no shortage of
options (for the French know how to
brunch). At Chaise Café you can be treated
to a three-course prix fixe brunch where
you get a “welcome course” followed
by a savoury then sweet course for only
$20. Promenade Café and Wine’s tight
brunch menu features classic omelettes and
well-executed Benedicts – all served in a
room with sweeping views of downtown
Winnipeg and the Red River, while the
crowds frequently queue for Marion Street
Eatery’s hearty dishes.

Owner Ami in front of Falafel Place.
River Heights’ brunch institution is the
unapologetically efficient Falafel Place,
where owner Ami has been turning tables
over quickly for over 25 years. This cash-only
establishment is known for its delicious Jewish
adaptations like the falafel breakfast and the
corned beef hash. Just be warned, once you’re
done eating, there is no camping allowed at
this eccentric, bustling brunch spot.
ABOUT PEG CITY GRUB
Here’s the thing about eating: It’s a lot of fun.
We’ve been told food should be local, organic
and good for you. Fair enough, but above all I
want my food to taste great.
My quest? To help visitors and locals find the
best food in Winnipeg and dish up the goods
in 400 words or less.
Peg City Grub is a Tourism Winnipeg
initiative, providing culinary tourists a guide
showcasing where to eat in Winnipeg.
