CONGREGATION AGUDATH JACOB February 2014 –Adar I 5774/5775 Rabbi: Gordon Fuller Phone: 254-772-1451 Fax: 254-772-2471 [email protected] www.agudath-waco.org President: Jeff Wolf Editor: Pearl Jacobson Office Admin: Amanda Henson [email protected] This bulletin is published twelve times per year by Congregation Agudath Jacob – a non profit organization. Founded in 1888 – Celebrating 125 years – Member of United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. In the beginning, God created Rick Bauer, eldest son of Simone & Jake Bauer. Rick was born in Houston, Texas, and the family moved to Waco when Rick was two years old. He has three siblings, in age order, David, Benjy and Rana. The Bauer family was a member of Congregation Agudath Jacob. I, on the other hand, was born in Far Rockaway, New York. Fortunately, my parents were of extreme intelligence and migrated south. After a brief stint in Shreveport, Louisiana we moved to Waco. Upon arriving in Waco, my family became members of Agudath Jacob. That is where my mother spotted a beautiful young man having his Bar Mitzvah and immediately decided he was the perfect match for me! We even lived around the corner from this beautiful family! Several years later, my father had had enough of the synagogue (we all know why there are two congregations!!). We joined the Temple. On Yom Kippur, services at the Temple ended at noon, while the synagogue marched straight through till the sun went down. This gave me the opportunities to not only grow in my faith, but to see the man I was destined to spend eternity with. My fabulous father-in-law, Jake, always saved me a seat on the Bauer family row right next to my Rick! The incredible Bobbye Brickman would always see that I had a ride home. At the tender age of thirteen, I was quite precocious and told Rick we were to marry some day! He was twenty-one, had already graduated from Texas A&M, and looked at me like I was crazy; then he gave me a quarter and told me to call him when I grew up!! Even that didn’t deter me. The years passed and I still sat on the end of the Bauer row on Yom Kippur. We dated others, yet for me, the bond between religious solace and true love were still at Congregation Agudath Jacob. I went off to college and my seat, to my knowledge, remained empty. Several years later, I was back in Waco out on the town with two of my still close friends and it happened! I saw Rick and asked him if I had grown up! We were married in 1982 and have two fabulous daughters. To my children’s disappointment, I had long since spent the quarter, probably on candy! ADULT B’NAI MITZVAH CLASS NOW FORMING FOR EVRYONE INTERESTED, EVEN IF YOU HAD A BAR OR BAT MITZVAH!! I tell all the bar and bat mitzvah students I tutor that you become bat or bar mitzvah when you reach the right age, whether or not you have a service and/or party. That age is after the twelfth birthday for girls and the thirteenth birthday for boys (the rabbis understood long ago that girls mature more quickly than boys). The service is just the community’s way to welcome you into it. When you reach that age, you become responsible for your own sins, and your own religious behavior. But with that responsibility comes some privileges, too. You can count for a minyan, read from the Torah (or other scrolls), lead a service, and you’re potentially eligible to serve as a witness. Technically, all a bar/t mitzvah student has to do at such a service is to accept an aliyah at a Torah reading; therefore, it can be held on any day the Torah is taken out (Mondays, Thursdays, Shabbat, Rosh Chodesh, and holidays). Our custom at Agudath Jacob is that bar and bat mitzvah students learn to read from the Torah and read at least one aliyah. We then encourage them to read more aliyot, read all or part of a haftarah, and/or lead all or parts of the service at which the celebration takes place. They also give a little d’var torah at the service. Obviously, this means that all members of the congregation have become bar/t mitzvah since they are all “of age”. Many had a ceremony to mark the occasion, but many did not. You now have the opportunity to do so, even if you already had a ceremony, and here’s how this class will work: We will meet once a month together to talk about services and other general things about prayer. You will choose to learn a new synagogue skill like Torah reading, haftarah reading, leading any of the services, etc. You can choose to learn more than one skill, too. I will set a time to meet with all the students who choose the same skill (even if there’s only one student). At some service to be decided upon jointly by all the students, but before Rosh Hashanah, each student will demonstrate the skill s/he learned and we will have a celebration afterward. This opportunity is open to anyone over the age of 13. Why bother doing a class like this? There are many reasons: one is that we all have the commandment to learn. Another is that we have a number of new congregants who are interested. Lastly, and perhaps more importantly, this will create a cadre of people, not just the rabbi or one or two others, who will be capable of conducting any of the services we offer as a kehilla/spiritual community/congregation. To join the class, choose one or more of the following: weekday Shacharit, Mincha, or Ma’ariv; Kabbalat Shabbat, Ma’ariv, Shabbat Shacharit, Torah service, Musaf, Hallel, Torah reading, Haftarah reading, being a Gabbai; holiday Shacharit or Musaf; other readings (Esther, Eichah, High Holiday Torah. THE DEADLINE TO ENROLL IS SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 16. Simply call or email me or Amanda, and as always, I invite your questions. It should remain lighted until sunset the next day. Possible prayer before lighting a Yahrzeit candle: Eternal God, I/we light this candle in memory of (name) _________, my/our beloved (relationship) ___________. The light of the flame rekindles all the warm memories of the moment we shared together, and reassures me /us that a piece of his/her soul dwells in my/our heart(s) forever. May his/her soul be bound up with the bonds of eternal life. Amen. Candles are available at the Gift Shop. Every effort should be made to say Kaddish at congregational services. It is meritorious to perform some Mitzvah or to contribute to the ynagogue in commemoration of the deceased. Kaddish will be read on January 31 Shevat 30 Bert Gardner Mrs. B.
