Lifting the lid:
Children become explorers looking
at a variety of different Mayan
artefacts.
History, environment and social
understanding (RE), Geography
To understand and create a timeline of Mayan
culture, where children will be encouraged to ask
their own questions.
Addition and subtraction: Using number bonds to 10 and 100 to
add and subtract 2 digit numbers
Number and place value: Comparing and ordering 2 and 3 digit
numbers
Problem solving, reasoning and algebra: Solve problems
including more complex addition and subtraction.
Mental multiplication and division: Know multiplication and
division facts for 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables.
Measurement: Know and understand the calendar, including
days, weeks, months and years. Tell the time to the nearest 5
minutes on analogue and digital clocks.
Shape: Know the properties of a 3D shape.
Statistics: Sort objects onto a Venn diagram.

Children will understand how our knowledge of
the past is constructed from a range of sources.
We will be exploring specific aspects of the
Ancient Mayans, such as food, religion and the
number system.
We will be looking at the geography of America
and comparing it with the UK.

Vocabulary: Time words for conjunctions, adverbs to
describe movement
Writing: Use headings to organise information, start to
understand the concept of a paragraph, combine
story elements of character and setting to create a
story, edit and improve work, use and adopt poetry
styles
Punctuation: Apostrophes for possession, start to use
inverted commas for speech
Reading: Discuss stories read, begin to use a
dictionary, infer aspects of character by referring to
the text, gather information from non-fiction texts,
perform poems using intonation

From this, they will learn to analyse their data and
draw conclusions, as well as presenting their findings.
Children will learn to group animals and plants, as
well as exploring different habitats. This will be linked
to Ancient Mayan civilisation.
Art, Design & Music
Children will design, make and evaluate their
own Mayan tortillas.
We will be creating our own sketchbooks using
a variety of art techniques, including drawing
and painting.
