What is
Reading Olympics?
Reading Olympics is a program designed to
promote reading, teamwork, self-confidence and
enjoyment of reading. There are books for all
reading abilities.
All students in in grades 4 and 5 are encouraged
to become a Reading Olympic team member and
take part in the activities. The Olympians will
work in teams to collectively read from the list
of 38 books between September and March.
Team members will be required to come to
meetings, which will be scheduled by the
coaches at each school. Teams will meet to
share information on the books they have read
with their teammates. After reading the book,
students will take the Accelerated Reader (AR)
test for that book.
Team members will need to be actively involved
with Reading Olympics. If at anytime the coach
feels the team member is not participating, they
may be removed from the team. Along with
attending meetings - members must read and
PASS the AR quiz for two books by December,
four by February and must have read a minimum
of six books by competition day. These are the
minimum requirements set for ALL Reading
Olympians.
A culminating county-wide Reading Olympics
tournament will take place in the spring. Team
members will compete in the tournament by
answering questions based on the Reading
Olympics book list. The winning team receives
the “Reading Olympics Champions” banner to
hang proudly at their school with the 1st place
trophy.
