Agony aunt letter
Write a letter asking for advice, swap with a partner and write a reply to their letter:

warning about Mr Rochester’s finances.
2. Jane Eyre asks if it’s acceptable for a poor governess to
marry her rich employer.
3. St John Rivers asks whether he should follow his heart or
his religious principles in choosing a wife.
Diary
Write a character’s diary entries for the day before and/or after an important event in the
novel:
1. Mrs Reed’s diary after receiving a letter from Mr Eyre asking Jane’s whereabouts.
2. Helen’s diary before and after Jane’s arrival at Lowood school.
3. Mr Rochester’s diary before and after his proposal of marriage to Jane.

Imagine that …
Write or discuss what you would expect the rest of the novel to be like if:
1. The Reed family try to make amends to Jane for their past ill-treatment of her.
2. Mr Rochester keeps Bertha at Ferndean Manor and allows her ‘indirect assassination’
(Chapter 27).
3. Mr Rochester attempts to marry Blanche and Mason stops the wedding. How would
Blanche react?
4. Jane agrees to live with Mr Rochester without being married. How would polite society
treat them?
5. Jane and Miss Temple meet again after twenty years apart. What would each have to say
about life?
6. Jane agrees to marry St John Rivers and prepare to go to India with him as a missionary.
7. Bertha doesn’t die in the fire at Thornfield Hall.
