American alligators
Where are the alligators today? Can you see where their eyes are?
They can hide in water and keep their eyes out - all the better to
see their prey with.
What parts of their body help alligators move in water?
Read this first, so you know what to look for. Once you are inside, stand still and
count to 20. This will give your eyes time to get used to the dark and start seeing.
Morepork
Kauri snail
A sharp tearing beak and talons (claws) help
moreporks tear up their food – they don’t have
teeth. Have a look near the moon – you might see
the morepork on a branch nearby.
These giant snails suck up worms
like spaghetti! They only live in
New Zealand.
What are they covered in?
Eating meat gives animals a lot of nutrition (good food) so they do not have to
hunt or eat all the time. This means they can sleep a lot!
Meerkats
How many of the carnivores that you saw today were sleeping?
What would their mother feed them on? (Remember – they are mammals).
Draw or write the name of your favourite carnivore at Auckland Zoo here:
Are there any babies or young meerkats in this group? .
Label parts of the body.
Find the meerkat that is on guard duty. Why is it doing that?
Stand very still. What other mammals can you see from where you
are standing?
Golden bell frog
Spot the frogs outside KidZone. How many can you find? They can
change their colour to match the green plants or brown rocks and
logs that they are sitting on. What colour are they at the moment?
