NGNI - Fraunhofer FOKUS

January 2015 Newsletter
The Fraunhofer FOKUS Competence Center NGNI (Next Generation Network
Infrastructures) and the associated Chair for Next Generation Networks at TU Berlin
sporadically send newsletters with short information about latest activities.
Start of FleMMingo Project
The FleMMingo project („Flexible
drahtlose Maschine-zu-Maschine
Kommunikation im Industriellen
Anwendungszenario“. German for:
“Flexible Wireless Machine to Machine
Communication in Industrial
Environments”) will start in February 2015
and is scheduled for a duration of 2.5
years.
The project is part of the Fraunhofer
MAVO (“Marktorientierte Strategische
Vorlaufforschung”, German for: “Market
Oriented Strategic Advanced Research”)
Initiative and is considered of top strategic
relevance in the scope of wireless
communication for the Industry 4.0. As a
MAVO, the project is dedicated to
provide innovations that will be rapidly
and continuously offered to industrial
stakeholders, which includes the set-up of
tests and demonstrations towards
potential customers in real or close-to-real
shop floor settings.
Five Fraunhofer Institutes, namely the
ESK, FOKUS, HHI, IPA and IIS will jointly
address the application of wireless
communication technologies in industrial
environments, including production
scenarios in scope for the Arena2036 and
Industrie 4.0 initiatives. The five Institutes
jointly represent a long-standing expertise
and visibility in the fields of industrial
applications, machine-to-machine
communications, internet technologies,
wireless communications, core network
technologies and scalable test-bed set-up
and operations, forming an alliance highly
capable to address the most demanding
challenges.
Fraunhofer FOKUS contribution is
centered around improving state-of-the-art
4G and upcoming 5G wireless access and
related core network technologies to
match the requirements of industrial
applications in terms of reliability,
robustness, flexibility, bandwidth and
latency, ideally being able to augment
or substitute current wireline control
systems communications (e.g state-ofthe-art field bus configurations) with
wireless
solutions providing competitive resilience.

Watch our very compressed 5G
introduction videos
Trying to summarize 5G technologies
into 10 minutes, Fraunhofer FOKUS
has released a set of 3 short videos
which present our perspective on the
5G requirements, use cases and
technologies, and how to reach
relevant research results with lower
effort by deploying realistic testbeds
based on comprehensive toolkits such
as Open5GCore and OpenSDNCore:
Part 1: what 5G is – an overview of the
high level requirements
Part 2: a very short overview of the 5G
use cases and technologies
Part 3: the Fraunhofer FOKUS 5G
testbed

Project: "SDN at the Edges
(SDN@Edges)"
The main goal of the EIT ICT project
activity SDN@Edges is the definition of
an EU Certification Centre for Business
Acceleration on SDN as well as the
development and experimental
validation of new business models in 3
use cases (home GW, edge virtual
services and reliability in mobile
backhaul).
The overall goal of the activity is about
accelerating the exploitation of SDN
and NFV in order to produce business
impacts (even in the short-medium
term) at the edge of fixed networks
(aggregation, access segments up to
end Users premises) and in the access
mobile networks (mobile backhaul and
aggregation network).
Specifically, the activity will address
three objectives towards
“Softwarization”:
i) Defining SDN requirements,
validation procedures and best
practices in order to specify the
framework to establish a Certification
Center for Business Acceleration of
SDN,
ii) Deploying field-trials to develop
and validate three main SDN usecases (for home GW, for edge virtual
services and for reliability in mobile
backhaul);
iii) Defining and testing new business
models (e.g. typical of ecosystems)
supporting the transition towards
Softwarization.
