Metric-Opoly!
Metric units are nice to work with, since they
are all multiples of ten. You can convert
between the various different unit prefixes
by moving the decimal point the correct
direction and number of places.

Convert 12.54 kilometers to centimeters.
The problem would look like this:
12.54 km = ___________ cm
kilo- hecto- deca- Home deci- centi- millibase
The base metric units that are in HOME
BASE are:
meters (m) for length
liters (L) for volume
grams (g) for mass
1
2
3
4
5
To get from kilo- to centi- you would move the
decimal to the RIGHT FIVE places. (Fill in
any extra places with zeroes.)
To convert between units, use the following
prefix mnemonic device:
King Hector Drinks [His] Double
Chocolate Milkshake
The sentence stated above is to convert
between the following prefixes (units)
kilo- hecto- deca- Home deci- centi- millibase
____ ____ ____ ______ ____ ____ ____
Notice each place
value gets a BASE.
[Home base] can
mean the base
units for meters,
liters or grams.
Since each step is ten times or one-tenth as
much as the step on either side, we have:
1 km = 10 hm = 100 dam = 1000 m
= 10,000 dm = 100,000 cm = 1,000,000 mm
And alternatively, we have:
1 mL = 0.1 cL = 0.01 dL = 0.001 L
= 0.0001 daL = 0.00001 hL = 0.000001 kL
To move to a smaller unit, you move the
decimal place to the right that same
number of places, and vice versa. Together
with the prefix sentence, this makes
conversion between the different metric
sizes simple.
The loops help you keep track of the steps
that you're counting, and make it really easy
to see where to add the zeroes, if needed.
In this case, after moving the decimal point
and adding the zeroes, you get:
12.54 km = 1,254,000 cm

Convert 350 milliliters to hectoliters.
The problem would look like this:
kilo- hecto- deca- Home deci- centi- millibase

350 mL = ___________ hLRights
Reserve
Move the decimal point five places to the
LEFT, filling in the empty spaces with
zeroes:
.0 0
3 5 0.
You must put a 0 in front of the decimal
place if that space is empty. The answer is:
350 mL = 0.0035 hL
