Access to new services
Connected TVs give consumers access to more services
and content and hence enhance their choice.
In the UK, the consumer has access to more than 70 additional
TV services via a broadcast MHEG application.
In Germany and France, the consumer has access to catch-up
services via broadcast HbbTV applications.

Connected TV as an enabler
Anytime, anywhere access to media on any device.
AV content is consumed from fixed as well as wireless devices, both
linear and on-demand.
Extends media pluralism by widening access to content.
Allows market entry for new content providers.
Enriching the user experience.

User Control Drives Success !
Control of the screen - let the user decide
Personalization of screen layout – user to arrange layout
according to own preferences
Choice of content - user free to choose content

Industry Vision
There will be further growth of both linear and non-linear
services.
Broadcast-supporting systems like HbbTV will enable
broadcasters to maintain their unique public position by
complementing broadcasts with additional content and
services.
Broadcast-independent systems will continue to grow, as
TV sets will develop into big-screen multimedia devices,
while maintaining the attraction of TV for users.

Key Recommendations
Let the market develop, grow and deliver.
EU should take an approach from a service point of
view, thus should not be device specific.
DIGITALEUROPE’s main concerns about EP Report:
Must found rule: distortion of competition and censorship
Scaling and overlays: limiting users choice and control
Mandating standards: stifling innovation and competition.

Example of application
DLNA content sharing using an app on a device acting as a hub.
This is an example of what we can already achieve in terms of
interoperability between various connected devices.

TV consumption in Europe
Television remains far the most popular medium with Europeans:
87% watch it every day or almost every day. In total, 98% of
Europeans watch television at least once a week on various type of
devices.
Moderate, single-digit growth during the past five years, for
traditional linear TV mainly watched on TV sets.
Exponential growth for non-linear TV (such as 'catch-up' TV, video
on demand, subscription video on demand and professional video
online) spread over several connected devices.
