Numeracy Support
Dear Parents/Carers,
As part of our continuing programme of support for your son/daughter we are keen to further improve
their numeracy skills. Currently our numeracy programme is focusing on:
 ensuring mathematical techniques are used and taught consistently across all subjects.
 sharing the mathematical techniques we are teaching your son/daughter.
As part of this, the mathematics department has compiled the ‘King Charles 50’. This is a
comprehensive list of the methods students will need to secure a good grade at GCSE mathematics
and support their learning across the curriculum. These skills are taught consistently within the
mathematics department and across the whole school. The complete document can be found in the
mathematics area on Connect on the school website.
In addition to this, the department will be sending home one or two methods as part of a weekly email for you to read over and to support you in helping your son/daughter with their homework.
Please bear in mind that we have written these sheets as a resource for students.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any queries you have with regards to the ‘King Charles
50’ or any aspect of your son/daughter’s learning.
Yours sincerely,
Mr Morris

Simplifying Expressions @ KC1
An expression is a collection of terms, without an equals sign. To simplify an expression, you
collect together all the terms that are alike. Remember, each term comes with the sign in front
of it.
Examples:
1)
Simplify c + c + c + c + c
=
5c
2)
Simplify 5e - 2e + e
=
4e
3)
Simplify 4x + 2y + 6 + 5y – x
4x + 2y + 6 + 5y – x
=
3x + 7y + 6
=
2x - 5y
4x – x +2y + 5y + 6
4)
Simplify 5x - 6y – 3x + y
5x - 6y – 3x + y
5x – 3x - 6y + y
5)
Simplify 3x2 + 2x2
=
5x2
6)
Simplify 5 x 3f
=
15f
7)
Simplify 2p x 4e
=
8ep
