Multiplying Decimals-Notes

Notes Multiplying and Dividing Decimals
_______
Dividing Decimals
________
- If the divisor is not a whole number, move the
decimal point to the ___________ to make it a
Dividing
whole number. Move the decimal point in the
dividend the same number of places.
- Put the decimal point directly above the decimal
Decimals
point in the dividend.
- Divide as usual. Keep dividing until the quotient
_______________ or _______________.
- Use estimating to check your answer. Round the
divisor and quotient to numbers that are easy to
work with (multiples of 5 and 10 work well) and
multiply them. If your solution is close to the
dividend you are on the right track.
Example # 2
Example # 1
Divide...
Find this quotient:
5.7 ÷ 0.3
First show the division like this:
Now move the decimal point one place to the right, which makes the divisor a
whole number. Also move the decimal point in the dividend one place to the right.

Example # 4
1.8 ÷ 8.1

Notes Multiplying and Dividing Decimals
Multiplying Decimals
- Line up the decimals on the right, and put the number
with more digits on top (do not line up the
________________!)
- Multiply the numbers as if they were whole numbers.
Multiplying
- Starting on the right, multiply each digit in the
bottom number by each digit in the top number.
Decimals
- Add the products.
- Place the decimal point in the answer by starting at
the right and moving the number of spaces equal to the
sum of the decimal places in both of the multiplied
numbers.
- Use estimating to check your answer. Round both
decimals to integers that are easy to work with and
multiply them. If your estimated solution is close to
your original solution you are on the right track.
