Each year 8 students attend the No Place for Hate Youth summit and come back excited to make changes on our campus. In order to earn the NPFH designation, our students need to plan and implement 3 school-wide projects and everyone in the school signs the resolution of respect. This is our 9th year to earn it!! Vanessa Garbaz, an AmeriCorps member, and CIS staff, organized a special project. Here are her words about the project. “The second project we did this year was titled "I am not what you label me" which focused on mental health awareness as it pertains to bullying within our school. Our goal was not only to raise awareness but educate as well. Our students came up with the project on their own and kept it going to its completion. They did the research. They made the shirts. They took the pictures. They really went above and beyond to make sure this project was a success. They really wanted to bring to light the casual use of mental health terms as jokes and how it can have a hurtful to those struggling with an illness. We hit some speed bumps with students not taking the project seriously but no project will reach a hundred percent of its audience. However we had many students who were moved by the presentation and i think that made all the difference.” We interviewed a few students who participated, Isabelle Lozano, Cameron Romero, and Rayven Martinez. How long did it take for you to prepare? Isabelle: “A couple of weeks.” Cameron: “2 or 3 weeks.” Rayven: “About 3 weeks.” How did you feel about doing this? Isabelle: “I felt like kids weren’t going to get the whole concept of it but it would have gotten through to some of the kids.” Cameron: “Nervous because we had to walk in front of everyone.” Rayven: “It was so much fun I loved helping others.” 3|Page Student/Staff Basketball Game By Valeria Salazar & Makayla Faz On March 10, 2017, the 8th grade students and staff played 3 games of basketball to determine who was better. The first two games were the girl 8th graders vs. the girl staff and the other one was the boy 8th graders vs. the guy staff. Both teams on both sides worked very hard and did an amazing job at working as a team. In the end both staff teams won. Even though both 8th grade teams were defeated they were not done yet. After warming up the 8th grade girls and boys gave it another shot and worked together as a whole and did a fantastic job. Although the basketball game was a big deal that day the band did an amazing job to help the crowd get rowdy. Also the cheerleaders were there to support the Wallace students and staff and they also did some new cheers and got some help from the cheer coaches. 4|Page InternatIonal Women’s Day March 8th is International Women’s Day. It is a day of globally celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It also calls to action the acceleration of gender equality. The world has witnessed a significant change and attitude shift in both women’s and society’s thoughts about women’s equality and freedom. Many from younger generation may feel that all the battles have been won for women while many feminists from the 1970s know only too well the longevity and deeprooted complication of women being considered a lower class citizen. With more women in the boardroom, there is greater equality in legislative rights with an increased critical mass of women’s visibility. In conclusion, women are still are not present in equal numbers in business or politics, and globally, women’s education, health and violence against them is worse than that of men. The Choir sang the National Anthem and band showcased a song they played during their UIL competition. We recognized those who were involved with UIL and the students who are in track. There was a grade level battle of the brains. Students participated in a relay race to correctly answer academic questions. 6th grade walked away with the victory! There was a dance performance by our cheerleaders and, to top it all off, we ended the pep rally with fun by finding out who wins the spirit stick! 8th grade won again but 6th and 7th grade were not far from winning. They get louder and louder each time. Watch out 8th grade! You have some competition. Stay tuned to see if 8th grade can hold on to their title! 6|Page Featuring…Alex Yi By Eric Gordon Band.
