3a Training Options
3a, the Abecedarian Approach
Australia, is a set of evidence-based
teaching and learning strategies
that have been proven to maximise
children’s learning outcomes by
enriching and enhancing educator
practice. The approach consists of only
four elements, each which specifically
promote intentional and meaningful
adult-child interactions:
The Melbourne Graduate School
of Education at the University of
Melbourne is at the forefront of 3a
strategy Australia-wide. We offer three
levels of 3a training.
Language Priority: a commitment to
make every experience an opportunity
for talking, listening, and learning
language
Affiliate Trainer (1 day): participants
become certified* 3a Affiliate Trainers
and are able to lead practitioner level
training within their organisation to build
and maintain the quality of 3a at an
organisational-level.
LearningGames ®: 200 experiences
or games played between an adult and
one or two children
Conversational Reading: individual
and pair reading that emphasises back
and forth communication
Enriched Caregiving: intentionally
adding educational content to the daily,
repeated routines of care
Practitioner (3 days): participants
become certified* 3a Practitioners
and are skilled in the implementation
of 3a strategies to support their early
childhood setting.
Coach (1day): participants become
certified* 3a Coaches and are well
equipped to coach and mentor
early childhood professionals in the
implementation of 3a within your
organisation.
* successful completion of a knowledge
test is required for certification.
The training is suitable for early
childhood teachers, educators,
playgroup leaders, students,
maternal and child health nurses,
Centre coordinators and leaders or
government or system-level personnel.
The training includes an extensive
range of materials including the
3a educator booklets, manual of
resources, implementation records,
planning frameworks and checklists.
Online registration access is also
provided to the member site of the 3a
resource website for 12 months. This
includes a range of electronic materials
and video exemplars.
Upon successful completion of training
and the knowledge test, participants will
be certified in 3a to the level equivalent
of the training.
Please note that Practitioner training
is required before being eligible to
complete Trainer and/or Coach training.
