Growing up in the lush Provence town of Hyères,
Stéphane Margolis was surrounded by the
tropical horticulture native to the region. Inspired,
he went on to study Ikebana, the Japanese art of
flower arranging which emphasizes humanity’s
close relationship with nature, at the Lycée
Agricole d’Hyères. His mixed-media vegetal
sculptures are suffused with bright colors and
grotesque materials including hair and eyeballs.
Within the humorous surrealism of Margolis’
work, however, lies an earnest message about the
fragility of our planet and human beings’ role in
destroying it. These self-styled “toxic plants” have
been featured in ELLE, Architectural Digest, and
Numéro, with exhibitions at Maison & Objet in
Paris and SOFA CHICAGO.
Margolis’ floral compositions draw inspiration
from his travels through the world’s flora and
the musical fauna he encounters in his work as
a DJ. Most recently, he has explored nature and
ritual through the use of petrification, which
was first utilized as an artistic technique in 19th
century France. Calcium-rich water is continuously
poured over objects Margolis selects at antique
fairs, causing mineral deposits to build up over
time. Photography of the resulting works mirrors
the caves in which the scientific process of
petrification occurs, effectively synthesizing the
natural and the mystical.
