Name:____________ I am… Poetry Project Write a poem about yourself. The poem must be at least 15 lines in length (longer is fine) and share information about who you are. This information can be about you as a person (interests, hobbies, sports, music, food…), or about your family’s heritage and how it has shaped you as a person. (Remember, a poem does not need to rhyme, but does not look like a paragraph). Include at least one example of figurative language!!(simile, metaphor or personification) Do NOT use my examples – yours should be very different Simile – compare two unlike things by saying one is like the other (She runs like lightning.) Metaphor – compare two unlike things by saying one is the other (He is lightning on the soccer field.) Personification – give human traits to things not human (The sun smiled down on us.) Use specific, detailed, descriptive vocabulary Revise to remove words like good, fun, nice, things… Include words and descriptions that provide sensory details – these will create an image (image = picture in the mind of your reader) touch (sticky, slimy, smooth…) smell (sweet, sweaty, spicy…) taste (tangy, sour, juicy…) sound (crunch, clang, creaky…) sight (bright, sparkling, shiny…) Your poem should have a strong beginning that draws the attention of your reader, and a concluding line or lines that gives your poem a sense of closure (ending). Illustrate your poem in some way (computer illustration, collage, drawing, photographs…) The illustration must relate to the content of your poem.
