SEASON 2017 1 SE AS ON 2017 SEASON 2017 3 Welcome to our Theatre Season for 2017. 2016 has seen us have our first full and exciting year in Ulumbarra and what an exciting year it was. 2017 is certainly not going to disappoint. We start the season this year with a bang! The very exciting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander company, Bangarra Dance Theatre bring their dynamic, new production Terrain to Ulumbarra in February. We are very pleased to bring Bangarra back for the first time in many years. This is one of two iconic contemporary dance companies that we will be presenting in 2017, the other being Sydney Dance Company who are returning with a double bill entitled Frame of Mind featuring works from acclaimed choreographers Gabrielle Nankivell and, of course artistic director of Sydney Dance, Rafael Bonachela. We are incredibly excited to welcome back, with their first main house production in Bendigo for more than a decade, MTC and what a production to welcome them back with; What Rhymes with Cars and Girls written by the prodigious Aidan Fennessy and inspired by the iconic solo album by Tim Rogers. Works from this album are performed by a live band, led by Tim throughout the play. Once again we welcome Bell Shakespeare to Bendigo. In 2017 they present Merchant of Venice and as always we will observe this classic tale of love and greed through the contemporary lens of this iconic company. We are very proud to present three very different and important indigenous works. As previously mentioned we start the season with Terrain from Bangarra Dance. In addition we will present Coranderrk, a co-production from Ilbijerri Theatre and Belvoir. This is a very Victorian story of the struggle for self-determination of the people of the Coranderrk Aboriginal Reserve in the 1880s. She Said Theatre will present the multi award-winning Hart a one man verbatim theatre piece exploring the stories of stolen generation survivors. In conjunction with the Melbourne Recital Centre we are also proud to launch a brand new fine music program called the Parlour Sessions. Staged in the relaxed setting of the Bendigo Bank Theatre this small season of some of the best ensembles and soloists in Australia will be an intimate and beautiful experience. We are also very proud to announce our new partnership with CreateAbility as they grow their mixed abilities theatre ensemble. Resident at The Engine Room and The Capital, this ensemble will perform their new work No Hands as part of our season immediately after its debut at the Castlemaine State festival. The launch of our season this year coincides with the launch of the Ulumbarra Foundation. This is a very exciting development for us. The purpose of this Foundation is to raise funds to benefit the performing arts in the Bendigo region. I congratulate its chair, Gordon McKern OAM and the rest of the board for the work they have done to date and hope it has a long and successful life. We also hope you consider giving generously to support them (and us!) Once again thank you all for your support and interest in what we do. We hope you enjoy the season offerings as much as we enjoy bringing them to you. After its world premiere season in 2012, Terrain went on to win two Helpmann Awards for Best Ballet/Dance Work and Best Female Dancer in a Dance or Physical Theatre Work for dancer Deborah Brown. In 2016, Terrain was remounted and opened to 5 star reviews, toured regional Western Australia and South Australia, and continues in Victoria and Tasmania in 2017. Terrain explores the relationship of Indigenous people to country and how landscape becomes a second skin, inspired by the timeless beauty of Lake Eyre in South Australia. Bangarra is one of Australia’s leading performing arts organisations with a unique dance technique forged from over 40,000 years of culture, infused with contemporary movement. Witness the power of its dance ensemble in this spectacular and meaningful work. Breathtaking… even mindblowing. - The Australian. SEASON 2017 5 Soul Food London Klezmer Quartet London Klezmer Quartet’s old and new melodies on fiddle, clarinet, accordion and double bass, and colourful stories about musicians’ lives and times, take you on a journey from the Baltic to the Black Sea and beyond, delving deep into the celebratory and soulful music of Jewish eastern Europe. Their acoustic sound, choice of repertoire, and combination of technical ability and musicianship give them appeal across the musical spectrum, with bookings not only for folk and world music venues, but also jazz clubs, museums, art galleries, and classical music societies. Their new CD, To the Tavern is their fourth, and tells a daylong story that they recreate in performance, combining the subtleties of the original tradition with a kick-the-chairsover ability to party. As well as bringing fresh life to an almostlost instrumental folk tradition through a huge repertoire of dance tunes and lyrical melodies - some self-composed - LKQ features the irresistibly sonorous vocals of Indra Buraczewska in traditional laments, a Warsaw Yiddish theatre hit with a hint of jazz (Goodbye New York) and even a song about beetroot soup. Prepare to be engaged in foot-tapping and backing vocals – if not all-out dancing! – as you join the LKQ party. With artistry like this, the music doesn’t have to be reinvented. - Evening Standard. Tuesday 2 May 2017 8PM Coranderrk is about what might have been. At a Victorian Parliamentary Inquiry in 1881, the men and women of the Coranderrk Aboriginal Reserve went head-to-head with the Aboriginal Protection Board. Their goal was both simple and revolutionary: to be allowed to continue the brilliant experiment in self-determination they had pioneered for themselves on the scrap of country left to them. Coranderrk recreates the inquiry. This is both great theatre and great history. It revives the voices of all those, black and white, who fought for a better pact between the country’s oldest and newest inhabitants. This special production pays tribute to the resilience and adaptability of a people who rose to the challenge despite the odds, appropriating the power of the written word to make their own voices ring loud and clear. Coranderrk is a collaboration between leading Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists, researchers, education experts and community members. The production aims to encourage a shared understanding of the past between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. Lola Montez was forbidden from performing in Geelong, showered with gold nuggets in Ballarat, so popular in Sydney tickets were sold at an auction and her performance was described by the Sydney Morning Herald in 1855 as “the most libertinish and indelicate performance that could be given on a public stage”. Lola Montez was the wildest showgirl of the nineteenth century, and her 1855 Australian tour put Mick Jagger to shame. Risqué, rabble rousing and skirt raising, she horsewhipped her critics (including The Editor of the Ballarat Times), swung down mineshafts on a single rope with champagne in hand, created the infamous erotic spider dance (allegedly with no underwear), escaped arrest dressed only in her jewels, showered with gold nuggets and insults, Lola Montez swept through Australia and its goldfields leaving a wake of scandal, outraged citizens and lovesick miners. Beethoven Spring Sonata Copland Appalachian Spring: Suite Piazzolla The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires Eoin Andersen violin/director Stefan Cassomenos piano Adult $60 Concession $55 Subscriber $50 Student $35 MSO Concertmaster Eoin Andersen invites you to enjoy some of his favourite works celebrating the return of spring. Beethoven’s Spring Sonata, bursting with lyricism and pastoral themes will see Eoin Andersen together with Melbourne’s own Stefan Cassomenos, who in 2013 was a laureate of the International Telekom Beethoven Competition in Bonn. The second work on the programme, Copland’s powerful evocation of the life of American pioneers in the Appalachian Mountains, will be played in the original version for 13 instruments, lead from the first violin by Andersen. In the second half we go to the southern hemisphere, where Astor Piazzolla mixes the fire of the tango with Vivaldi-flourishes in his highly original take on Four Seasons in Buenos Aires for violin and string orchestra.
