Mapping your Island Kingdom Congratulations! Because of your scientific achievements you have just been given a newly discovered island in the South Pacific! Before you go to see the island, you will need a map to figure out how to get around and to plan how you might use it. Add these things onto your map using your knowledge of topography and map symbols. Use the check boxes to keep track of your progress. First, set up your map: ¨ Your contour lines should be traced over with brown colored pencil, every 5th line should be an index contour labeled with the elevation ¨ A title - come up with a name for your island ¨ A compass rose (8 or 16 point) ¨ A description of the contour interval (For this map the Contour interval = 100 m) ¨ Neatly label the highest elevation (use + or x with elevation labeled on map) Now for the fun stuff: Add a key or legend showing the symbols used for the following places on your map. ¨ At least one river in a likely location (look for v-shaped contours that point uphill) One river should end at the ocean. ¨ At least one lake or pond ¨ You need some shelter, where is a good place to build? Add 5 buildings. ¨ An airport in a good location so you can fly in on your jet ¨ You will need some roads or trails to get around. - Add one road from the airport to a building - Add a trail that goes from a building to the highest point on the island - (Hint: Roads and trails usually follow the least steep part of a hill, and often do not go straight up an incline) ¨ A school (any place where people learn new information or skills) ¨ A marsh or swamp As a final touch, color in the ocean surrounding your island. Be sure to: - Work neatly! - Take your time to properly build the map thinking about the terrain - Use the check boxes above and make sure you include all requirements - Include your name!!!
