UC Application for
Undergraduate Admission –
Freshmen
UC Application Workshop for the Class of 2017
Presented by MHHS Counseling and GEAR UP,
October 13, 2016
Remember…
Who you are and what you do in college is
a better predictor of future success and
happiness than where you go to college.
Successful people come from every school
in the country. A great school will never
make an average person excel; a great
person will excel at any college. In short,
college does not make the person.
College is a match to be made,
not a prize to be won.

Biochemistry
To list Biochem as a CSUSM course on your college applications:
• Add CSUSM to your list of colleges
• On your college applications, list as a Spring Semester class (Spring
2017 if you are taking it now as a Senior, or Spring 2016 if you took it
as a Junior).
 CHEM 105EX, General, Organic, and Biochemistry for Life = 4
units
 CHEM 105L, Lab General, Organic, and Biochemistry for Life = 1
unit
• Grades: Contact Dr. Termin. Your MHHS grade is not necessarily the
same as your CSUSM grades. You can request your CSUSM
transcript to find out the grades you received in these class. If you
are taking it now, you list it as “planned” for next semester.
• CSUSM Office of Extended Studies to get your CSUSM ID number,
then request a transcript from CSUSM

comprehensive review factors that campuses consider in
their admissions decisions.
• Freshmen must choose 4 out of 8 questions
• Maximum of 350 words for each response
• All questions have equal value; there is no advantage or
disadvantage to choosing certain questions over others

1. Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively
influenced others, helped resolve disputes, or contributed to group efforts over time.
2. Every person has a creative side, and it can be expressed in many ways: problem
solving, original and innovative thinking, and artistically, to name a few. Describe how you
express your creative side.
3. What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and
demonstrated that talent over time?
4. Describe how you have taken advantage of a significant educational opportunity or
worked to overcome an educational barrier you have faced.

overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?
6. Describe your favorite academic subject and explain how it has influenced you.

8. What is the one thing that you think sets you apart from other candidates applying to the
34
University of California?

Click the blue “answer”
button to respond to the
questions of your choice
35
What does UC expect to learn from
the responses?
• The new format gives applicants a greater say in the kind of
information they want to share
• Students can express who they are and what matters to them not only
in how they respond to the questions, but also through the questions
they choose to answer
• Option over which questions to answer gives students greater flexibility
and control
• Allows students to select questions that are most relevant to them
