Upcoming Large Scale Fire Test in a Four Story Building from
SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden
________________________________
In the coming weeks, the Fire Research Department of SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden will be
conducting large-scale fire testing in Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic. The testing will occur in a four
story building constructed of reinforced concrete and composite steel, representative of modern large,
open-plan office buildings. The total floor area of the test compartment is around 270 m², and between
700 and 800 measurement devices in total will be installed to gather data.
This unique full-scale test is intended to study fires in large, open-plan, well ventilated spaces such as
modern office buildings. Part of the study will be an investigation of the response of structures to fire
exposure. The test will provide information for the validation of current design approaches, identify areas
where improvements are required, and help to further develop structural and fire models suitable for the
design of modern high rise buildings.
SP are coordinating the testing with the University of Edinburgh, Majaczech and the fire brigade in
Carlsbad. Other partners include CSTB (Centre Scientifique et Technique du Bâtiment), Imperial College
London, and Luleå Technical University, Sweden.
The results of the testing will be published by SP and will provide further insight into fire behavior and
building construction for modern buildings.
