Submission of Abstracts for the ERA-EDTA Congress, Jerusalem,
21-24 September 1997
General information
Communications are invited on all aspects of nephrology, the treatment of renal disease or the scientific
background to the study of the kidney.
If you have not indicated your presentation preference or the Subject Heading for the Abstract Book,
the Paper Selection Committee will decide for you.
• One author must be an ERA-EDTA full or associate
member.
• Authors may submit more than one abstract but
are asked to exercise reasonable restraint.
• Submitted abstracts must describe unpublished work
which is not already in press and which is not
awaiting possible acceptance by any other society
that publishes its proceedings.
• Submitted abstracts cannot be withdrawn.
Instructions for the preparation of abstracts
Use only the original abstract forms. If you require
additional copies please send your request to the
ERA-EDTA Congress Office.
Please practice typing on a blank photostat before
typing the original form.
Abstracts will be reduced in size, but otherwise will
appear exactly as submitted. Any which are unsuitable
for reproduction will not appear in the book of
abstracts.
Use the upper box for title, authors and affiliation.
Use the lower box for the body of the abstract.
Title
Type in capital letters. Do not identify yourself or
institution in the title. Do not type in bold. Do not
underline.
Authors
Start a new line. Type in lower case. Underline only
the name of the presenting author. Use initials for the
first and middle names and write only the surnames
in full.
Affiliation
Start a new line. Type name and institution, city and
country only. Use lower case
Body of Abstract
State the purpose of the study, describe the method,
summarize the results presenting sufficient details to
support the conclusions, and give the conclusion
reached (it is not acceptable to state 'The results will
be discussed'). Divide the text into no more than 3-4
paragraphs. Do not use subtitles such as 'Methods' or
'Results'. Use numerals for numbers and only very
well known abbreviations e.g. ml, Osm, GFR. If you
must use other abbreviations, please explain them the
first time they appear.
DO NOT IDENTIFY YOURSELF OR YOUR
INSTITUTION IN THE TEXT.
Tables and charts
Tables are accepted without gridlines. Charts cannot
be reproduced in the Abstract Book.
Typing
The abstract box is exactly 12 x 15 cm. Do not type or
print on or outside the blue line.
If using a typewriter, use a carbon ribbon or a
slightly used silk ribbon. Do not erase. If you must
make corrections use white paint. Use type no smaller
than standard size, e.g. standard Elite 12 pitch electric
typewriter. Recommended characters are: Elite, Pica,
Eletto(10or 12/inch).
If using a word-processor, do not use dot matrix
printers. Do not use reduction facilities, nor characters
that are smaller than 12 points. Do not reduce the
standard line-spacing. Recommended characters are:
Courier, Helvitica, Palatino, Geneva, New York. If
you find it difficult to set the precise margins for your
printer, you can print the text on ordinary paper and
send it together with the original form, provided that
your abstract remains within the size limits (upper box
12x3 cm, lower box 12 x 15 cm).

Delivery to the Congress Office
All abstracts must be typed on the enclosed Abstract
Form. The original and one copy with name(s) of the
author(s) should be mailed to the ERA-EDTA
Congress Office, at the following address:

The address above is a PO box, only ordinary or
registered mail can be delivered there. For those who

Please consider that all abstracts will be processed by
a computer. If you are willing to send your abstract
also on diskette, this will grant the best possible
outcome of your work in the Abstract Book (please
indicate in the diskette label the program used).
As an alternative to the diskette you can also send
your abstract through E-mail, to the following address:

Anyway, you have to send the ORIGINAL
ABSTRACT ON PAPER within the deadline, otherwise it will not be considered by the Paper Selection
Committee.
Deadline of submission of abstracts
Abstracts must be received by March 24, 1997.
Abstracts received after this date cannot be considered by the Paper Selection Committee.
Publication
All submitted abstracts which conform to the instructions will be divided in four groups:
(a) Abstracts accepted for oral presentation;
(b) Abstracts accepted for poster presentation;
(c) Abstracts not accepted for presentation but printed
in the Abstract Book;
(d) Abstracts not accepted for presentation and not
printed in the Abstract Book.
Groups (a), (b) and (c) will be published in the
Abstract Book distributed at the Congress.
Groups (a), (b) and (c) will also appear in the
Abstract Section of the Journal 'Nephrology Dialysis
Transplantation' Issue number 9 (1997).
In addition, authors are encouraged to submit their
final manuscripts to be peer reviewed for publication
in Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation.
