it soon will be. It is the season
when every room in the house
seems to need a lift. If your

the time to give it a thought.
The couch of the type shown

Catapulting Airplanes
There are two methods of cata
pulting airplanes off ships—the
gunpowder catapult arid the com
pressed air catapult.
These devices work in much the
sam e way -as does a sling shot.
The plane is placed on a car
which is on a track on the deck of
a ship. The releasing' of com
pressed air or of gunpowder at
the back of the plane assists it to
pick up the necessary flying speed.

Drain the juice from the pine
apple and save it to use for somethiing else, or just drink it. Whip
the cream until stiff. Blend the
cream with the drained pineapple

By varying the kind of jam used

New York.—One of the most
puzzling problems faced by the
scientist exploring man’s mind
is the role played by the power
ful glands of the human body.
A m atter of demonstrated fact is
the knowledge that these glands
serve as chemical factories, pour------------*

stupid.
That the endocrine glands occupy
a place of power in determining
the mental soundness or illness of
the individual has long been sus
pected by physicians and psychol
psychologists. Glandular disorders have
been noted in the mentally ill and
to some this has m eant that the
glands could be blamed for the men
tal illness. Others, reversing the
relationsMp, see the emotional
strains o*f mental disease as effec
tive in throwing the endocrine sys
tem out of balance.
Actual Proof Lacking.
Actually, medical science today
has no crucial evidence of any
cause and effect relationship be
tween the powerful glands of inter
nal secretion and mental disease or
m ental deficiency. Dr. Hugh T. Car
michael, psychiatrist of the Univer
sity of Chicago medical school, told
his colleagues at. the meeting of the
American Association for the Ad
vancement of Science.
A recent survey showed that of- a
group of about 300 m ental patients
selected for endocrine diagnosis
and treatm ent more than a third
were so improved that they were
able to leave the institution. But
do not jump to the conclusion that
it was gland treatm ent th at saved
them. Further analysis showed on
ly 17 per cent of those selected
for endocrine diagnosis actually
had anything wrong with their

Washington.—Ordinarily, if a sea

moons he discreetly says nothing
about the m atter, lest a cynical
world raise an eyebrow and m ur

swizzles. But Third Officer R. T.
Lewin of the American steam er
Yorkmar saw a double image of the
moon recently, for which an abnor

earth’s atmosphere was responsi

Mr. Lewin observed the strange
phenomenon during a run from Bal

’hiie his ship was off the tip «f

moon was going down through a
thin haze, when it appeared dou

touching the upper. Twenty min

moon set, still appearing double.
