Welcome to this
championship event
Since 1903, the Indiana High School Athletic
Association has promoted the values of education
based athletics and was the primary reason for its
formation over 100
years ago. It has
been an honor for our
Association to partner
with member schools
in the promotion of
these ideals. The
importance of this
mission is more critical
today than ever in our
history.
Currently in our state,
over 160,000 students
from 410 different
IHSAA member schools
choose to participate in interscholastic athletics.
These fortunate students absorb a variety of life
lessons as they develop from adolescents to mature
young adults. The opportunity to learn self-discipline,
teamwork, sacrifice, loyalty and commitment are
attributes that have come to be known as “the other
half of education.” The mastery of these characteristics retains dramatic impact as these young people
assume leadership roles in our society.
A former high school principal once shared with each
of his incoming freshman classes that “you will only
take away from high school what you leave behind.”
The students that perform before you today are
leaving their absolute best behind for generations of
admirers to recall.
On behalf of the IHSAA Staff and Board of Directors, we welcome you to today’s events. Education
based athletics which are pure, wholesome, and inexpensive reflecting local flavor and enthusiasm has
always been the objective. It is what we mean when
we say….. Pure Spirit, Pure Sport, Pure Indiana!
Cordially,
Bobby Cox
IHSAA Commissioner

Tournament History
Many changes have been made to the Indiana state
wrestling tournament since its inception, and to this day it
remains one of the most exciting and best-attended state
finals event on the IHSAA calendar.
While not officially sponsored by the IHSAA, but held
with special permission, the first state high school wrestling
tournament took place in 1922 at Indiana University. A
total of 19 wrestlers from seven schools participated in
the first tournament. From 1922 to1935, a regulation high
school wrestling match called for one eight-minute period
with both wrestlers starting in the neutral position on their
feet. No point system was in place, and the winner was
determined solely on riding time or by a fall. For the 193536 season, a point system was installed and periods were
added to make the matches more interesting for fans.
From 1922 to 1951, the only IHSAA rules for wrestling
were the same ones that applied to all sports in the state,
mainly eligibility and age requirements. During this time,
so-called gentlemens’ agreements were decided upon
before meets by the coaches and these rules were enforced by the officials.
A new set of rules, written by coaches Chauncey
McDaniel of Southport High School and Clifford Myers
of Bloomington High School, were adopted by the IHSAA
beginning with the 1951-52 season. Modifications in the
standing rules, most notably those that helped to prevent
excessive weight loss, were made in time for the 1957-58
wrestling season. Finally in 1973, using Indiana’s rules as
a measuring stick, the National Wrestling Federation Rules
were written and adopted.
Due to the sport’s rapid growth, the IHSAA took over
sponsorship of the tournament from 1933 to 1943, though
the state finals were still held at Indiana University. However, as the Great Depression gripped the country and the
United States entered World War II, there was a gradual
decline in the number of schools participating. That forced
the IHSAA to drop wrestling from its sponsorship from 1944
to 1949. During this period, various participating schools
kept the tournament going by holding an annual invitational
state tournament.
The IHSAA resumed sponsorship of the tournament
in 1950 and continues to do so today. From 1950 to
1959, Bloomington and Lafayette Jefferson high schools
alternated as the host school before the finals were moved
in 1960 to Southport High School’s 7,200-seat fieldhouse.
The finals eventually required even more seating and
from 1981 to 1999 were held at Market Square Arena in
Indianapolis before moving to what is now Bankers Life
Fieldhouse in 2000.
From 1996 to 2012, a separate team tournament was
conducted in dual format to determine an overall team state
champion. The state finals were conducted at Southport
High School in 1996 and then culminated at Center Grove
High School for the next 16 years.
Beginning in 2013, the state championship team was
again determined by points accumulated by individual
wrestlers as it had been from 1936 to 1995.

Ward E. Brown Mental Attitude Award
Beginning with the 1985 tournament, the mental attitude award in wrestling was named after Ward E. Brown, the
IHSAA’s fourth commissioner. Mr. Brown served as commissioner from 1976 to 1983. He also served as assistant
commissioner from 1969 to 1976, and while principal of Crawfordsville High School, he served as a member of the
IHSAA Board of Control in 1967-68. During his term as commissioner, the IHSAA Wrestling State Finals moved to
Market Square Arena in 1981 and enjoyed tremendous growth.
Previously, the award was known as the Harold F. Mumby Award from 1966 to 1971 and was presented to the
outstanding wrestler in the state meet by the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association. The award was
named in honor of the Bloomington High School coach of 10 state championship wrestling teams. From 1972 to
1984, the IHSAA Executive Committee renamed and presented the Harold F. Mumby Award for Mental Attitude.
The recipient of this award, who is nominated by his principal and coach, must excel in mental attitude, scholarWard E. Brown
ship, leadership and athletic ability in wrestling. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA corporate partner, will
