VA:Cr3.1.K Explain the process of making art
while creating.
Procedures/Activites
Students still need time on their self-portraits. They will have time to complete them after working
on their Valentine’s Day heart weaving.
Students will be creating a Valentine’s Day themed weaving. We
will start class by discussing what weaving is and what we use it
for (rugs, baskets, etc.). I will show students examples of
different types of weavings from the cultures we typically study
(Native American, Colonial, Appalachian, and West African).
We will talk about the different things you may need to weave
(clip of a video to help students see the tools needed). After we
discuss what people typically use to weave, I will tell students
they are going to learn to weave, but with paper! I will show students the example of their art and
tell them the supplies we will need.
Students will spend the first day working on painting their paper to weave and cutting out their
heart. The second day of the lesson, students will weave their paper together and glue their heart
onto the weaving.
After they are made I will have them laminated and given to students to take home (hopefully) the
week of Valentine’s Day. If time allows, students will complete a self-assessment critiquing their
craftsmanship and understanding of the weaving concept.

Students will create a Valentine’s day heart drawing using
complimentary colors to color the heart and the background.
Students will be able to use markers to color in their image.
Students will be introduced to the 4 C’s: correct, craftsmanship,
complete, & creativity. I will explain how we use these 4 C’s to
determine if a student did a nice job on their work.
At the end of the lesson (once hearts are complete), students will fill

Procedures/Activites
Elements of Art (Value): Students will begin class by reviewing
the Elements of Art we’ve already learned about through a
class discussion. Once we’ve reviewed previous elements, I will
introduce students to Value. We will discuss why artists use it
and how it can be created with different mediums. While I’m
explaining value, I will use one of Louise Nevelson’s sculptures as
an example of different values. Afterwards I will show a short
video about Louise Nevelson and how she influenced the world
through her art.
One of her famous sculptures is in remembrance of the Holocaust. Each box has something in it to
remember a person that passed away. All the boxes together represent the victims of the
Holocaust. We are going to create our own sculpture and together all our boxes will represent
Shepherdsville students. Students will work in groups to repurpose recycled items to create their
sculpture. Once they are finished the sculptures will be spray-painted a solid color.
Once students complete their sculpture they will complete an artist statement about the sculpture.
They will have to explain value and key information they learned while creating their sculpture.
Free Art Day: Classes that have earned their 10 crayons in their crayon
box will receive a Free Art Day where students are able to choose
what they create. There will be multiple different stations that they
may choose from. The following week they will continue with their
Elements of Art.
