This is the sum of the calcium and magnesium ions in water. Hard water requires excessive amounts of soaps and
detergents to produce sudsing. Hard water also causes scale deposits to form in waters heaters, pipes and appliances
when the water is heated.

The pH of water is a measure of the alkalinity of the supply. The pH scale ranges from 0 –14. Below 7, the water is acidic,
and above 7 it is alkaline. A pH of 7 is neutral. As water becomes more acidic, it becomes more corrosive. Water with a pH
below 6.8 should be neutralized to prevent damage to metal pipes, faucets, water heaters and appliances. At a pH above
9.0, water acquires a soda or alkali taste. When the pH rises above 10.0, the water begins to feel “slippery.” The pH scale
in logarithmic, meaning it measures in increments of ten. An increase of one pH unit represents a tenfold change.

TDS is the total concentration of solid materials — such as salt or sugar, which are dissolved in the water. High readings
of TDS can be the result of harmful or harmless substances contained in the water. More specific testing would be needed
to determine the exact make-up of TDS. Those materials, which dissociate into ions (e.g. salt) can be removed from
water by ion exchange. Organic substances like sugar, do not break up into ions when dissolved in water. These types
of materials can be removed by distillation or reverse osmosis.
