SUMMER News Letter 2017
Our topic this term is:
‘Mini-beasts’ then ‘people who help us.’
Dear Parents and Carers,
We are planning an exciting summer term. The children will be beginning to explore the topic of ‘Mini-beasts’
then ‘People that help us.’ We will then have the opportunity to discuss the lifecycle of butterflies, frogs and
other small creatures.
Our topics allow us to follow many areas of the children’s interests. We will be writing about and later learning
to classify mini-beasts. We will be experiencing role play and dressing up whilst learning about the important
jobs that people who help us do. Below we outline some of the activities that will be taking place at school and
possible ways you could follow this up at home.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
 At school we will be:
 Encouraging children to develop empathy for living creatures..
 Learning about the ‘People that help us,’ including Vets, Doctors, the Emergency Services and Farmers.
Ways





to continue learning at home:
Encourage your child to find out about the different jobs that people do.
Discuss how to care for animals including looking after pets. Visit a farm/pet shop
Finding out where different foods come from – looking at packaging etc.
Helping your child with homework and encouraging them to do their best.
Discuss their school day and find out about their topics in books and on the internet.
Physical Development
At school we will be:
 Developing co-ordination and catching skills.
 Developing body control when running or moving.
 Using tools to develop fine and gross motor control. Important for writing.
Ways to continue learning at home:
 Playing catch with a ball or skipping with a rope. Running games (Tick)
 Making jigsaw pictures or using scissors to cut out pictures.
Communication, Language and Literacy
At school we will be:
 Developing reading skills, encouraging children to read for pleasure.
 Develop writing at your child’s level, writing words and sentences.
 Reading with the class Non- fiction books and enjoying stories.
Ways to continue learning at home:
 Sharing a book with your child. Discussing stories, poems and information books. Visit the library.
 Reading labels in shops and in the street.
Mathematics
At school we will be:
 Recognising and writing numbers up to 20 and beyond.
 Exploring using coins and measuring/comparing objects around us.
 Counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s and solving addition and subtraction problems. Writing number sentences.
Ways to continue learning at home:
 Recognising numbers in the environment – house numbers such as two digit numbers 18 etc.
 Using money in shops and counting out change. Counting in 1’s, 2’s 5’s, 10’s etc
 Using subtraction - ‘How many spoons left if I take two away?’ and adding on – ‘I have 2 forks, how
many more make 5?’
 Pairing socks/ shoes and counting in 2’s.
UTW (Understanding The World)
At school we will be:
 Thinking about the jobs people do.
 Learning about the life cycle of butterflies and frogs.
 Thinking about where we get our food and how we care for animals.
 Using ICT to find information.
Ways to continue learning at home
Discuss the jobs people do. Discuss where our food comes from – eggs from hens, sausage from pigs etc.
 Visit the library or read books about pets or insects.
 Visit a farm and learn about the job of a farmer.
EAD (Expressive Arts and Design)
At school we will be:
 Making models and painting pictures.
Ways to continue learning at home
 Make a model using junk or Lego.

Dates for diary: June 15th - Ash class Assembly in school. (9.10 am) Sports day - Wednesday July 5th (pm).
Please continue to write about the things your child achieves on the Yellow star WOW slips (these can be found
in the cloakroom)
We loved the fantastic castles and the information the children put into their home link books over the Spring
term. We look forward to seeing the work the children produce for the Summer term.
